So I just heard that we have 12 hours before a solar storm comes? I'll be honest, I don't know what a solar storm is or why the media is making a big deal about it. Can someone explain? Here's an article about it: http://www.theguardian.com/science/2015/jul/28/uk-can-expect-just-12-hours-warning-damaging-solar-storm-space-weather

Now, you know what you can expect from these barbarians. They are a race of rabid BASTARDS that will fight us tooth and nail! But they don't know what they're up against. Cyrodiil, is CIVILIZATION! Cyrodiil, is ORDER! Cyrodiil is POWER! And out here, WE. ARE. CYRODIIL.

"Generally speaking, the faster the ejection, the greater the potential impacts."

I'm way to immature to handle this article.

This solar wind, when it reaches earth, can potentially disable electronics, like an EMP, as JeffreyEagan said.

No need to worry.  The article only states that IF one happens, it may only be noticed 12 hours before it hits earth.

We occasionally experience weaker solar storms that do little or no damage.  However a huge one, like the Carrington Event BITD, can cause mass damage to everything electrical.  Back then we only had telegraph, nowadays we rely so much on electronics that a good solar storm would create total chaos.

A solar storm is actually pretty simple, think of it as less of a storm, and more as a varied wave of charged particles that are shot out of stars or other astronomically very large, high energy bodies. They're most known to damage satellites, or other spacecraft, and if severe enough can hamper communications on the ground through wireless means.  The effect on the earth is most sever nearer to the poles, but to the general person, it really won't do much, if anything at all. It's mainly a hazard for the space faring crowd.

if they get really, really, really bad though, they can burn off a planets atmosphere at the worst, or disable electronics at the best. Really, it's nothing to worry about, we experience minor solar flares every once in a while, and our son is tame enough to probably not drop a massive one. Think of it this way, if there was going to be an insane planet killing solar flare and storm, then we probably wouldn't be here right now, remember, we're approximately 1/2 the way through our sun's life cycle, and solar storms and the like are more common in a stars youth, or old age when it is least stable.

Dude, you should reread that article...

Humanity would only have a 12-hour warning about the arrival of a “coronal mass ejection” that could damage the National Grid, pipelines and railway signals, according to a newly released document from the UK Cabinet Office. [...] It is therefore likely that our reasonable worst case scenario would only allow us 12 hours from observation to impact.

They are just preparing a strategy for eventually future solar storms and telling people how they should prepare themselves in this kind of event. Really nothing to worry about.

In other news, we don't have very good warning systems or any way to do anything quickly if a large object has the potential to impact earth. Same with super-volcanoes..

We are sitting ducks and the people with money are investing too much into "it has never happened to us before".

"Normandy" i7 4790K - GTX 970 - Phantom 410 (Gun metal) - Z97 Extreme4 (asrock) - 128GB Crucial SSD - 1TB WD HDD - H60 Refurb. - 7 case fans | G710+ Keyboard, G230 Headset, Acer GN246HL Monitor.

Quick thoughts on system: I7 is extremely quick and I'm glad I spent the extra for hyper-threading. I regret my decision to get the GTX 970, it has horrible coil whine. There isn't any excuse for this terrible whine I and others are having. I HIGHLY recommend a 144hz monitor. Future Improvements/upgrades: Rubber fan mounts, basic speakers, more ram (for a total of 16gb), replace GPU.

144hz is love. 144hz is life. I like to submit unfinished posts then do about 20 edits. I like the Night Theme too.

Worst case scenario : A storm of similar magnitude than the Carrington Event hits us today :

Every PC will be dead.  Same with every phone, digital watch, car and motorcycle (except the very old ones that don't rely on electronics).

The entire electrical network is fried, which means even your gas-based heating won't work anymore because the gas company can't pump the gas.  Same with the water, no electricity means no pressure and hence no water.

Shops won't be able to get new products because the trucks are all broken.

Not that you'd be able to buy anything anyway because all the computers and servers of the entire banking system are fried, meaning your bank account vanished into thin air and whatever cash you have in your pocket as the solar storm hits is all you'll have.

The internet would be dead too.  All those tech companies lose all their value and due to the entire banking system being gone they can't pay their staff anymore.

Same with every company that relies on goods being transported in.  They'll have no money anymore  and no products coming in.  Almost everyone will be unemployed.

As for communication, the postal service will take a massive hit too and it'll take a while before they start delivering letters again ... by horse or bicycle.

The only means of modern communication will be some walkie-talkies and HAM radios that preppers and tin-foil-hatters stored inside Faraday cages.  And that equipment will probably be seized by the government.

It may sound far-fetched, but it really isn't.  A storm like that hit earth a little over 150 years ago and there's no telling when it happens again.  It may happen tomorrow, or not in our lifetime.

What are you going to do if it happens?  What are you going to eat when the stores are empty?  What are you going to drink?

Do you have enough food and water to last the weeks or months it's going to take before the chaos is over and people start rebuilding?

Well, if that happens, technology would somehow restart itself eventually.

I just wonder if it would hit every single bit of technology across the entire world (Even stuff that's way down under ground), but then you've also got to think about the technology we have up in space too, what would end up happening to it?.

Wonder if using a faraday cage would be able to protect the electronics from it..

And it wouldn't be that difficult to start creating electricity again either, it'd just be the issue of finding the materials for it..

THANKS FOR THE FRIGGIN SCARE DUDE.A solar storm simply is a jolt of energy released from the sun, and can completely destroy anything to do with the power grid, basically a natural EMP.

Don't forget it could kill everyone on the ISS.

A massive solar storm can take out the entire electrical grid and even fry electronics  <--- Sarcastic face is sarcastic
