MS Windows 10 Mobile flagships leaked in full detail

FYI: All the images are mock ups made by windows central using statements and documents provided by their sources, AKA grab the grain of salt

Mock ups of Cityman, AKA Lumia 940 XL/950 XL, sources say Cityman won't have capacitive buttons unlike shown in the images.

 

A few months ago the first leaks for these devices started to pop up, they are referred as Talkman (Lumia 940/950) and Cityman (Lumia 940 XL/950 XL) both are very similar expect for Cityman having a larger display, a notch faster SoC and a bit bigger battery due to size, everything else is almost the same, here's the spec sheet to refresh the memory.

 

Talkman (Lumia 940/950)

 

  • Matte White or black polycarbonate body
  • 5.2 inch WQHD (1440x2560) OLED display
  • Snapdragon 808, 64-bit Hexa core
  • Iris scanner (infrared) for Windows Hello
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot
  • 20MP PureView rear camera
  • 5MP Wide-angle front facing camera
  • 3000 mAh removable battery
  • Qi wireless charging with flip cover
  • USB Type-C

 

Cityman (Lumia 940 XL/950 XL)

 

  • Matte White or black polycarbonate body
  • 5.7 inch WQHD (1440x2560) OLED display
  • Snapdragon 810, 64-bit Octa core
  • Iris scanner (infrared) for Windows Hello
  • 3GB of RAM
  • 32GB of internal storage with a microSD card slot
  • 20MP PureView rear camera with triple LED flash
  • 1mm silver ring inside the circumference of the black camera pod
  • Aluminum side buttons
  • 5MP Wide-angle front facing camera
  • 3300 mAh removable battery
  • Qi wireless charging integrated
  • USB Type-C

Naming on these phones is a bit of confusion, many have referred to these as the 940 and 940 XL, other ain't sure since MS is looking to skipping the X40 range and go to X50, this is due to the X40 range being used on previous year models like the Lumia 640, the official retail name should be decided by September.

 

On the accessory side there's plenty to be talked about, both phones will support a very Surface 3/Pro 3 reminiscent digitizer pen, if it isn't the same actually. Then there's a smart cover case with a circle cutout in the top middle to display upcoming notifications, similar to the one in the ZenFone 2, will come in black, silver/white or brown colors. Lastly and more interesting is a dock accessory for use with phone continuum that has display outputs, USB inputs and charging, this is possible due to both phones supporting USB Type C hardware. The accessory codenamed Munchkin will reportedly have a MSRP of $99, quite in the expensive side.

If you noticed in the spec sheet, both phones will have iris scanners, this feature is for Windows Hello security features available on Windows 10, the scanners should be fast enough to unlock the phone in less that a second, faster that typing a PIN number. Windows Central reports that this feature won't be enabled on launch and will require a software update that should arrive one or 2 months after launch.

 

WC sources claim to have had a hands on experience with the devices shared some of their thoughts.

  • Very thin (7-8mm) and light
  • Massive, removable battery that is the thinnest they have ever seen
  • "Sexy as hell."
  • Looks like a combination of the Verizon Lumia 928 and Lumia 830 (camera housing)
  • Completely square handset
  • The front glass covers the entire front, non-curved display
  • Volume up and down keys separated by power button
  • Dedicated camera button

And in all, these devices pack features to make them differentiate from the massive catalog of Android flagships, both unique in hardware and some that leverage new features added to Windows 10, personally i don't see almost much to complain about hardware though the square build and power button in-between volume keys sound a bit uncomfortable, especially on the phablet that is Cityman, maybe they can get away with it being "thin and light" but it definitely requires a personal encounter to see if it could work out.

TL;DR: 2 new Windows 10 Mobile flagships in the works, almost similar specs expect for a few differences, mostly in screen size, official naming in discussion between two possible candidates, most unique features are an iris scanner, pure view cameras and USB type C support, varied accessories with plenty of possible functionality on each, leakers described them as "sexy as hell".

These phones would also support Continuum which would be cool as hell. FYI Continuum on phones means hooking your phone up to a monitor and Bluetooth KB/M (or use phone display as trackpad) and run apps similar to a desktop experience. Although it wouldn't run Win32 desktop apps obviously as its not x86 but still very cool nonetheless.

 

If these release in Canada in a reasonable time frame I will totally upgrade to one. Probably the Talkman one since its smaller at 5.2". I also really hope they do keep the squared design, I really like it.

Too bad it has Win10. If it ran Android I'd buy one for sure.

windows 10 mobile is looking really nice and the phone too. If only it had decent app support.

I'll be honest.

Windows phones are the future. They work with the worlds most popular operating system, and in my opinion have the best UI.

As soon as Windows phones get major app support, I will switch.

I know a lot of people will disagree. iOS and Android are already so out there that people will refuse to go to some "new" (new meaning different, not age-wise), but in the end I think it is what everybody will end up with.

You know that guy that games on a MacBook? I'm that guy.

If the talkman ran android, I would get it in a heartbeat. 

I dunno, windows 10 mobile looks more and more interesting and android is becoming less and less stable. Personally I think one of these might be my next phone. Just depends on pricing and reviews.

If Intel gets into these someday, Android and iOS will both be in dire straights. Nothing's quite like ubiquitous support and seamless ecosystems if it can actually be pulled off.

I am very exited for this phone. While lack of apps is a definitely an issue, I expect in 1 years in, the lack of apps would be solved (well the core apps will be there), due to the popularity of Windows 10. The ability to connect my phone on a screen and have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and use it as a desktop computer is the killer feature for me.

I'll be honest.

Windows phones are the future. They work with the worlds most popular operating system, and in my opinion have the best UI.

As soon as Windows phones get major app support, I will switch.

I know a lot of people will disagree. iOS and Android are already so out there that people will refuse to go to some "new" (new meaning different, not age-wise), but in the end I think it is what everybody will end up with.

Yea, especialy now when they are trying to unite apps for all Windows platforms it should definitely help the app support.

In all honesty, I just use an Android phone for app support (and because I don't like Apple). I actually hate the damn thing because it's so unstable and keeps crashing. I would consider a Windows phone if they could just have better app support.

I know everyone keeps saying it but if it had the same app support as android I would buy it in a heartbeat. I would love to have a a decent Windows ecosystem, would even consider getting a Surface Pro and retiring my iPad Air.

I don't use a ton of apps so app support isn't a huge deal to me. I hope there are some good Windows phone options on Sprint in a couple years when I'm done paying off my Note 4. Well either that or T-Mo gets something resembling good service here.

I like how these renders look even though I don't like protruding camera and position of loudspeaker but design is very good. I've been following Windows phone how it has been shaping over years and it's quite good, and now with Windows 10 and these flagships I'd like to get one. Still don't get why everyone are going with more than 5" if it's somewhat bigger than it would be awesome to make it less bezel and more edge-to-edge from all sides.

As long as windows 10 mobile doesn't suck, the 940XL looks like the phone to finally convince me off of apple.

windows 10 mobile will support android apps, well sort off, MS is adding like a binary translator in windows mobile to support android apps, for what they have shown, devs just have to replace some google API's and tweak a bit the code so the same APK can run on it, from what they are showing it shouldn't take more that a day of work to have a working build of the app
