How long did your first PC build take to build?

trapizi

If it's a simple build or you don't care about cables, 20 minutes. If it was like my main rig, an hour. If it was my weekend rig, an hour and a half.

is it not in use? xD or would you have to build her a new one? xD

it's still in use. I have my old P4 sitting in a box ready to replace that old piece of junk. Just need to get round the 3 hour trip down there and the awkward conversations with my dad about my ex...

  • 3 weeks later...

I have everything installed in the case (H440) besides the video card. Reflecting on yesterday, it was a pain in the ass to build. I constantly lost cables and tutorials weren't helpful at all. I had to figure everything out without any real assistance. Overall it took me around 5-6 hours! How long did your first build take? Did you have the same issues? Is this normal?

Yes, I know the grammar in the title is a bit derpy. :)

To actually put the parts in, around 20-30 minutes. To get the cabling routed nicely, around an hour.

Including Windows install or just the hardware? Hardware was like 45 minutes to an hour and Windows was like 20 minutes.

Cable management, which I did later (although it wasn't horrible initially), took much longer. I basically sat down with a beer for about an hour and a half and figured out optimal routes fixed everything in position. The parts that took the most time were the SATA power connectors and directly behind the PSU on the back panel (lots of wires in a tight space).

I had done a lot of research prior to buying the parts and starting the build.

So far there's always one small thing that I get hung up on. Usually it's the cpu cooler. Especially my dark rock 3. I almost gave up on it.

About an hour to put everything together. This was back when cases hardly supported cable management so you just slapped everything in and fired it up. Took another few hours to diagnose a no post issue. I never figured out why it didn't post. I took everything apart and reassembled it, then it worked. Then another few hours installing XP on a HDD on the same IDE lane as my CD drive.

Pretty much a shit show, but that beast ran for a good 5 years without issues.

The CPU Cooler took me almost no time to install. But it did take me quite a while to figure out how to install it on LGA1150. :D

If I braided the cables then it would look amazing! But right now it looks okay. I might go back and braid all the cables later. :)

In total, I've probably spent like 10 plus hours on cable management through the 3 year life of my desktop, and I don't even have a windowed side panel, lol.
