How long did your first PC build take to build?

Many moons ago when I owned my own PC shop, I expected a "system builder" to make 20 - 25 "internet ready*" systems in a 8 hour shift... 

 

The record if I remember was 34 in 8 hours...

depending on the required cable management and complexity of the build, somewhere between 30 minutes and a few hours.

Hi guys, I'm applying for a system builder position at my local computer store and they require me to have a fast building skill. I've only built 3 pc before and the third one took me around 3 hours. Is it fast enough? I have no experience in setting up a water cooling system before so will it take longer?

to try and give the best answer i can i'll say this:

 

it really depends. 

the cheaper the parts usually the quicker, if you're built 2-5 computers in your lifetime and you dont need to refer to the manual/guides for EVERYTHING (only stuff like some random connection that you've never seen before) you're fine. 

as long as it doesnt take you upwards of an hour for a really simple computer, i cant imagine them turning you down simply because of that. 

 

water cooled systems do take a bit longer, especialy if its custom loops, but im sure, (unless the employer is 100% insane) they will understand that and allocate more time for those. 

 

complete computers are a bit of an odd ball in retail stores. 

they're usually the most expensive product in the store, but also the lowest on demand. they might make up 20-45% of how the company gets by. with the rest beign main computer parts like proccessors or memory, and little trinkets like phone covers and cables. 

 

be sure to mentally equate an additional 15 minutes to an hour for software stuff like the OS, drivers, key programs, ect. depending on download speeds proccesor and harddrive speeds and the general amount of what needs to be done.

when its the same/very similar computer? over and over? i could bang out like 50 of those a day before getting a little bored i'd have to be allowed alot of room though, because i'd want to do them in batches. (LIKE COOKIES Xp :3 ) 5 all at once, if i notice a problem in just one i'll make sure to look out for it in the rest.  

 

also i think freegeek (i volunteer for them) has like an army of what you just described.

Agreed. But the most annoying part is installing windows , drivers ,software and tweaking it to your liking which takes a lot longer.

Dem IDE cables doe. I remember trying to CM my mom's old PC. took me 3 hours and then I said fuck it out of pure frustration that the cables weren't going to cooperate.

it really depends on the extent of components that is being put into the build. Some builds can take 30-45 minutes if you use all compatible components and no water cooling while others can take hours.

Ready to boot in 10-20 mins for a typical PC with decent cable management. 30 mins or more with proper cable management.

Well, I just put my computer together (replaced CPU, Mobo and RAM so just stripped it down and rebuilt). Longest build yet at 3 hours for a full rebuild (bloody rad wouldn't fit anywhere) and something like 2 hours for software and quick validation.

1 hour if i want cables sorted and airflow perfected.

It took me around 40 hours to build mine, but that includes measuring and fabricating parts. Installing the parts took less than an hour, but I took half a day to do the cable management (and even then I'm still not happy with it).

Well if you counting a day as 24 hours then yea 50 not an issue

Depends. I'd say 30-60 for just building it, an extra 10-20 for cable management, and an extra 30 for watercooling.

30minutes for watercooling? How do you do that.... it took me 30minutes to fill my loop and get all the air out of it. How do you do a full watercooling loop in 30minutes?

My first build took me two hours. The one I built for my neighbor took around twenty minutes. Practice makes perfect? I did mess around with my first PC a lot.

well, i have the attention span of a squirrel smoking its first blunt. soooo (extremely strange comparison that makes me want to say ''harsh bud yo'' but 90's aside, i can be doing the same thing for about an hour before i wanna be watching a youtube video or listening to music at the same time before i lose my mind)

Got no idea if I still have the bastard. IIRC it was a BTX motherboard. Also, I want to see it light up like a Christmas tree under its own thermal failure

I should really pay my parents a visit and see what old crap I still have stored in the attic. Fingers crossed for my Commodore 64  :unsure:

pretty sure the mounting points on regular sockets are the same between ATX and BTX... then again most coolers in the past four years dont support anything previous of LGA775. (just my luck doing my LGA771 and LGA775 main rigs. )

It takes me about 20 min to put it together and another 20-30 to do cable management pretty well. This is no custom water cooling.  I install windows as I am doing cable management to save time.
