[Updated] GTX 980 Ti Launch Driver 353.06 Freezing/Crashing

As we all know on GTX 980 Ti has recently been launched and along with it the ForceWare 353.06 driver. This latest driver introducing borderless windowed G-Sync was meant to improve tesselation performance with Nvidia Hairworks and generally improve performance, but has actually been causing games, mainly Witcher 3 to crash for a lot of people running latest Nvidia 900 series cards.

 

This especially affects people that just bought a GTX 980 Ti, because there is no alternative driver compatible with this newly released card.

But even people running GTX 980's, 970's and even for some weird reason GTX 780Ti's have been reporting issues with their whole system freezing after 5 minutes of gaming.

 

EDIT: Nvidia has released a hotfix driver, which is meant to address "G-Sync Windowed mode issues" and seems to fix some of the the issues. But windowed G-Sync still crashes the whole system.

Btw this driver can not be downloaded via GeforceExperience, but only from Nvidias knowledge base.

 

 

For me personally as a GTX 980 Ti owner, this has been extremely frustrating. Apart from the fact that Nvidia drivers usually are just more of a disease than anything else, with loading times of GeforceExperience and Nvidia Control Panel of more than 5 seconds, this whole GTX 980 Ti launch with a clearly immature driver feels like just a rushed move to beat out AMD on releasing new gpus first. Now, almost 2 weeks after launch, Nvidia still cant get their cards to work properly. WTF?!

 

What are your thoughts? Do you have similar issues with 900 series cards or The Witcher 3?

 

 

 

UPDATE: There has been no driver update since 353.12, which fixed full screen g-sync with a single 980Ti, but nothing else. Windowed mode g-sync or dual 980Ti's crash within seconds of in-game in Witcher 3. Other games I played so far with the 980Ti like CSGO and Red Orchestra 2 have the same problem, but only at about 5 minutes in game. This at 2 weeks into launch is unfortunately to say the least.

 

UPDATE: Talked to EVGA support today, no alternate alpha driver. We will need to wait for Nvidia.

 

UPDATE: If you only have a single 980Ti and if you do not use borderless g-sync, a complete deinstallation with DDU and reinstallation of 353.06 might work for you.

Guess I can wait just a little longer before I buy 2 of them unless AMD change my mind on that.

its not only an opinion, its a fact, that why there are sources.

also the issue has been occurring on all Maxwell cards, including Titan X

Okay then. I wasn't really planning on buying one to begin with, but I'll be extra sure not to buy one now. Oops, my mouse slipped. I accidentally ordered like 20 of them. Oh well, I guess I'll just chuck them at the local homeless youth because these 980 ti's are so useless they can't even run Witcher 3.

I have 2 980Ti's, and not had any issues at all so far related to drivers. Even finished the Witcher 3 on Ultra without issues.

 

Only issue was with Windowed G-Sync that would turn off SLI, other than that it's been smooth sailing.

Guess the folks I know, and myself are super amazing luck so.

I'm going to buy a 980ti and a fury X, and then they'll get married and elope, leaving me with no gpu.

I think to avoid any sort of confusion, you should consider making your titles less misleading and more like Nvidia new drivers causes new title to crash.

There is no other driver for GTX 980Ti, so the card is currently unusable in certain circumstances.

@skullbringer can you tell me what issues you are having because the only issues i was having with the drivers occur

on more then JUST the 980 ti and are a problem with Chrome in which disabling hardware acceleration fixes the issues.

I personaly have 2 980 ti's and have  addressed any isses that i had with evga support and had them resolved.

Playing the witcher 3, it crashes/freezes after 5 minutes. Playing GTA 5, CSGO, or any other game I have played in the last few days, crashed after about 15 minutes.

Sometimes the whole computer freezes so I have to completely reset and reboot.

wanna check in the windows event viewer what the crash is. also  check to see that your voltages one 3.3 and 5 volt rails are stable

and what is your over clock on the 980 ti.

I did have a Witcher 3 crash yesterday after playing about an hour through. I just figured it was your typical PC derp moment. Haven't had problems since though.

Already checked that, nothing suspicious in the eventlog apart from the unexpected shutdowns/resets after the freeze occured.

I am running a RM1000 with a single 980Ti, cant really comment on voltages, but it has been stable before with a 780Ti K|ngp|n at 1420MHz, which almost consumes 30% more power compared to a 980Ti.

My overclock was a boost of 1504 with + 56mV, but it was stable for a 8 hour run of Unigine Valley. Also I set it back to stock, to verify the overclock wasn't causing any trouble, issue persists.

try letting the card just boost itself both my cards are stable in testing but  in games  when i have the second card clocked over 1467 its tends to crash  the other is happy sitting at 1614
