Scientists have invented a new trillion-frame-per-second camera!

Prashant Nani X

But how can it capture so many frames when reality runs at 30 fps?

I wonder what they'll actually use it for. I'd imagine it may actually help with propulsion in some way, being able to better understand how explosions and stuff work.

My mind right now!!

HOW!!!!!!!!!

Is it fueled by pixie dust and magic.

But seriously that is great being able to film at one/sixth the speed of light will help science capture those very fast particles.

Imagine trying to store the footage from that camera. I imagine that thing would fill a 1TB hard drive in less than a minute if the resolution is something respectable like 720p. A traditional hard drive wouldn't even be fast enough to write all that data. Massive SSD Raid 0 anyone?

I'm having a hard time comprehending this.

It won't be able to shoot for a minute at a time. Like a second at most, though I doubt for even that long since 1 second of footage would take years centuries to play back at 25 frames per second.

And I highly doubt it would maintain anywhere near 720p.

Assuming each frame was 1KB in size (which would be seriously low resolution), it would fill a 1TB hard drive in 1/1000th of a second, at a data rate of 1PB/s.

I want to see a video of someone turning on a light.

It might be a while, lets say that it play back at 30FPS, 1 *10^12/ 30 = 3.3*10^10 seconds Let's say it takes 300ms(accounting reaction times and the time for the filament to brighten) to turn on that's 1*10^10 seconds that's a cool 317 years.

Probably not:

"The team is working to increase how many frames the camera can take in a single shot: last August it was six, and they're now working towards 25. Eventually, they hope to reach 100 frames per shot."

Also, the stream of particles that come off when the protons collide probably interfere with the camera. Also light is too large(wavelength) to  view these particles as they're many orders of magnitude smaller.

I'm still trying to figure out what "It can capture events occuring at 45,000 km per second" means.

The ability to google properly is a skill of its own.
