The Witcher 3 has been pre-ordered 1 million times

Not much to say here. Actually only one thing, that it has been pre-ordered 1 million times.

 

Pre-order sales for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt topped 1 million today, according to developer CD Projekt Red.

 

The official Twitter account for the game tweeted the news this morning. One million in pre-orders eight days before the game releases is considerably better than sales for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings, which took about three months to hit 940,000 in sales.

 

Here we are always saying not to support pre-ordering and then there is this.

CD Projekt Red is by absolutely no means a huge publisher. If anything they would be considered more "indy".

IMO, this shows that if you have a product that really serves a consumer (free DLC, already huge content in the game), and breaks the chain of just slapping their fans silly for all their money, people will come to you.

Didn't say CDPR was a big publisher. I was implying that the big publishers will look at Witcher sales (among others) and still think they can do pre-orders on unfinished games.

 

Doesn't matter if CDPR is offering free dlc for the most part.

Right. Especially with digital copies, there's no excuse for the "I want to be guaranteed a copy!".

I'm not surprised, witcher is really sold by it's story/graphics, Witcher 2 in it of itself wasn't that amazing of a game. It was a bit rough around the edges imo, the whole not being able to jump off ledges and such.

But i pre order collectors editions for extra swag, digital and/or physical swag is a thing. I love having objects on my bookshelf.

I'm a collector so yeah.. I however do have the option to return said order (unopened) if It turns out its a bad game... Something digital orders rarely have.

I pre-ordered because I knew I was going to be back on my shitty home internet after leaving uni, so I want to pre-load. Plus too, CD Projekt Red hasn't let me down yet, and I got it at the discount on Steam. So really, if you're one of those people that can't trust yourself to be careful when pre-ordering and you go around screaming "don't pre-order", perhaps you should examine the reasons someone would pre-order.

If you have a half decent $15-19 CD/DVD R/W it really shouldn't take all that long for a game to install. I mean are people really that impatient that they cannot even wait 15-20 minutes for a game to install? What is the rush in playing? The game isn't going anywhere. It's not like you are missing out on anything.

 

Maybe it's just me but I don't think wallpapers and soundtracks are worthy of $60, that money IMO, is reserved for the actual quality of the game itself.

As for the so-called "mystery" of the game working or not, I've played Witcher 2, and I've made the conclusion that CD Projekt Red is a decent PC game developer to take that risk of the game not working well at launch for the reward of 10% cheaper price.

 

Also note, even if the game didn't work properly on launch day, there is still a window for it to become fixed between the launch date and the first date of the game going on sale greater than 10%.  So let's say the worst case scenario occurred and the game did not work for me next Tuesday.  I know the game will work between now and the first Steam sale.  Therefore I conclude that the risk/reward of pre-order issues/10% off is a very adequate risk to take.

 

So with your burger analogy, the accurate comparison will be to order that burger from a burger joint you liked already and ordered from there before.  In that case, sure, buying a burger before seeing it is an easy purchase because you know what you're going to get.

Well, you can get the game @ G2Play.net for 25% off and that price will not only stay there (meaning when the game is released), but get lower as time goes on (I mean another 10% as low as 3 weeks later). So saving a measly 10% is no excuse to pre-order a game that you can get for cheaper elsewhere and the price will only go lower as time goes on.

 

Secondly, if you know anything about the restaurant business you would know that not every item on the menu is going to be as good as the item you tried first that you enjoyed. There's no guarantee that the restaurant you get a great cheese burger at will also make a good chicken parmesean and the same goes for that vice versa, the place where you get a great chicken parmesean probably doesn't make a good cheese burger. So therefore, your excuse that they made a good game before therefore this game will be good is pretty much null and void. Or even if you stick to solely cheeseburger joints, just because they make a classic cheeseburger good doesn't mean their gourmet cheeseburgers are going to be good. I know plenty of burger joints that can only make a basic cheeseburger good but as soon as they try to do something funky or creative they lose my taste buds.

I'm just gonna leave this here for people who think developers/publishers are infallible. 

 

Microsoft Game Studios published multiple Halos. Each a commercial and critical hit in their own way. Halo CE, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, Wars, 4 - all of them continued the glorious path and were fairly robust and serviceable FPS games. 

 

Then Microsoft Game Studios pushed out MCC. The clusterfuck known as MCC. Rushed, broken, too much attempted and not enough time in the oven with way too many cooks who tried to fix things in all the wrong ways. The game took 6 months to be where it should've been at launch. 

 

Clearly they gave a damn and learned enough, Halo 5 had a strong beta (a real beta, a year out, none of this 2 weeks before demo bullshit). But all the same, we have no idea if Halo 5 will be a masterpiece like the others or another dud like MCC. 

 

Why do you clowns think certain brands and certain developers are infallible? They aren't. Stop giving them money for no bloody reason. IF the game is good, you can wait the 2-3 days after all proper reviews show up to then buy it. The instant gratification mentality is what lets people keep the pre-ordering going - and it is pathetic.

You can get your hands on the GOG version right now. But the game is not playable (server locked until May 19'th).
