Samsung Note 5 to have a 4k display with a record-breaking 748PPI (and 762 for the Edge variant)

Nineshadow

Nice for VR. And when I saw that S6 won't have 4K I tought their next Note will, I knew it :)
It will be awesome to see it in person, and battery shouldn't be some issue afaik OLED works different and performance, well I see it work pretty well. Just would be nice if they offer for games and some other things to change resolution, like 1080p. I mean game on 4K on smartphone is just -_-.

Apple and Samsung are really just digging their own graves at this point

Yeah. For the first time I'm almost glad they used a fancy nonsense name instead of just calling it OLED.

Granted, it's only called Super-AMOLED.

oh crap. I was making jokes about how people only complain when apple pushes boundarys, apparently its horrible when other companies do to.

if it impacts battery life and such, then yeah its horrible. if not, so what

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY

Nobody.. I repeat, nobody in the latest generation of smartphones has complained that their screen was not sharp enough, I mean fuck the iPhone display is like the least highest PPI these days and its still a gorgeous display... Sure if there are NO other complaints, improve the screen.. BUT

Instead we tons of things to complain about that need fixing FIRST before adding more pixels ---

Battery life, camera quality/features, build quality, speaker quality, OS and UI, software, performance, poor button placement, lack of waterproofing, useage of cheap materials, lack of expandable storage/good built in storage options,

well and many more things that could make phones better

instead of wasting time fitting a big screen. which... yes, reduced battery life and drags performance down

well fucking done samsung

Haha, im not angry, I was pretty chilled our writing that, I just get annoyed when technology companies.. seem to stop caring about their own tech

I too would be worried about the impact on the battery life, but...

I'm a happy Note 4 owner here, and if I may say so: The battery life is stellar (2-3 days with LTE and 5-6 days without), fast charges in under an hour, great build quality, amazing camera, great performance, accepts up to 128GB microSD, good button placement.  The phone does have samsung bloatware, though I've never seen it showing up on any of the OS usage reports draining resources.  The latter bloat is an area I would obviously change, but 1) is that a thing they would even do? and 2) the OS speed is still lightning and hasn't qualitatively slowed at all since I got the phone, so can't yet truly complain.

The Note 4 does have pretty much every base covered.  If there's nominal improvements to be had in all sectors, of course go for that, but Note 4 is an amazing phone, the engineers are probably scratching their heads on the Note 5 drawing board.  "What do?"  "Coffee?"  "4K screen?" "Yea all right."

You guys are looking at this all wrong. Yeah a 3840 x 2160 display on a 6" phone is stupid, but the more adoption of high resolution displays we get, the faster we will see an adoption of high resolution media.

Wow. Fucking samsung, i've lost all respect for them at this point. Really, 2560x1440 is the ultimate limit at this point for screen resolutions, like the G3. Anything higher is fucking useless.

Not really. the AM refers to "Active Matrix" which is just how the pixels are addressed, and then "super" part in SAMOLED means the digitizer is integrated into the panel itself.

1) You're wrong about it being useless. Someone with average or better vision will still be able to see the pixels if they know what to look for.

2) The LG G3 uses a full RGB layout. This is diamond layout. Like I said earlier, with this crazy high res the PPI of red and blue will actually only match that of the G3. Right now all Samsung phones has a far lower amount of red and blue subpixels per inch than the LG G3.

If you think the G3 is the maximum needed then you should welcome this with open arms, since it puts Samsung on the same level as LG in terms of PPI across the board.

Next year it will be 5k then I suppose... it's unbelievable how many gimmicks they pull out of their hat to justify a ridiculous 700$ price point. If I could have a 1080p version for 400$ I'd buy it.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

Didn't know that, that's nice. I still don't think anything more than 1080p is really useful on a phone though... you can probably tell the difference if you look for it, but quite honestly I already consider 720p at 7" to be perfectly fine, I only really care for more for content consumption on the go (and 1440p/4k wouldn't benefit that save maybe in some youtube videos).

Is there even a SoC that can run a game at 4k yet (smoothly)? I don't think so, unless they also have a more powerful (and has to be a lot more powerful) that can run mobile games at 4k. Tegra K1 anybody?

YES finally

wohoo for HMD VR :)

Now that you mention it, it's probably for the purpose of Samsung VR since it doesn't make sense to have that pixel densities for regular use.

Isn't samsung using its own in-house designed processors lately though?

They've been using their own chips for years now, at least they have in their Asian and international models.

They're the second SoC name I mentioned in my post which you quoted.

Exynos.

Ahh, I thought so, wasn't sure which processors were theirs though. Thanks for enlightening me though :)

This is so overkill!
You can't even see the pixels on your screen... FullHD with around 200-400ppi is totally fine for me.
I wonder whats the goal here. If iphone ever breaks that? seems no selling point for Apple.

Maybe they should make a monitor with similar specs and the price from the screen of the Note5. This would be great^^

This is just stupid I can barely tell the difference between my LG G3 screen and 1080p screen let alone 4k.
Not to mention that you can barely drive those resolutions on a full fledged PC.
Instead of pushing 4K they should let it at 1080p make full RGB color screens and use the extra hardware to save battery and make it easy to run higher end applications/games.

This is just as stupid as Apple that made the Iphone slimmer with the camera sticking out.
Like let the phone as it is and put a freaking bigger battery in it instead.

And this is exactly why I don't care anymore about anything happening in the mobile space because the companies are to retarded to make actual good products because all they care about is numbers that actually make the product worse instead of better.

the iphone 6 plus is 649 with 1080p screen and 16GB of storage while note 4 has 32GB so the 720 price isnt so ridiculous compared to the competition
