1) X99 Deluxe

Only X99 white and black for my build, and no TUF line available.

I bought it because I had to, so only if I had to again. Waiting on TUF release, which I can paint white.

2) Z97i-Plus

Best ITX form factor board IMO, for my gaming box.

Yep. Not the first I've bought, definitely not the last.

3) Z97 Gryphon

5 year warranty on mATX for a customer build.

Yes. Can't say no to 5 year warranties.

4) Z97 Sabertooth Mk2

5 year warranty, matched color scheme.

Yes. OC's like a beast, warranty, etc. etc.

5) Z77 Sabertooth

Factory refurb special for $120. Matches mil-spec black build for customer.

Yes. OC's Ivy/Sandy well, looks great, armor fans don't bother me.

6) Z97-A

Budget Z97 builder, don't need wifi/bluetooth/features.

Yes, go to budget ATX form factor.

7) Gigabyte X58A-UD3R

Had SATA III partial support on 1366, was important at the time with first gen SSD's.

Yep. Great classic BIOS, only problem was forced PS2 keyboard support, which was annoying. OC'd well. Northbridge got toasty, but they all pretty much did back then.

Asrock Z75 Pro3.

I got it because it was extremely cheap for an overclocking-enabled board at the time. Cheaper than most H77 boards. VRMs are adequate for moderate overclocking, which is fine because I am only overclocking a Core i5-3450 ("limited unlocked", ie. multiplier can only be increased by 4). It's identical to the more expensive Asrock Z77 Pro3 except for not having the Intel SRT feature for SSD caching - but that's fine, I would rather use an SSD as a drive than as a cache anyway.

I have had it for 2½ years now, and haven't had any issues. The fan control in BIOS is pretty barebones, so eventually I just bought a fan controller to take care of things. The color scheme is black/brown, which many don't like, but I guess it kind of fits with the Noctua NH-U12S I added later.

Asrock Z75 Pro3.

-snip-

Intel Z75 the forgotten chipset. I've only seen Asrock use it, it supports unlock CPUs for OC. Not sure why others board makers won't use it, they can sell it at a much lower price over the Z77.

I have the MSI 990FXA-GD80.

Reason for buying it was i was upgrading from an Athlon 6000+ which i was using an ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe and the Sata Ports died in 2012.  The MSI had great reviews and i bought a 4100 bulldozer and 16GB 1600 Ram at same time as the upgrade.

I would recommend the board yes but i would tell people to use caution on what ram to buy as this board looking at the MSI forums can be a little fussy on what ram u use.

Was the only ROG Mother board available at the time. And I use ASUS / RoG since I can remember.

Not really. I prefer the ROG Hero over this one. since I don't use many features on this board.

ASUS P55 - Hiccup free for six years of almost continuous use (only shut it down when going on vacation.)  Been so long I had to stop and think about it.  One of these days I'm going to upgrade the CPU cooler and actually overclock it.

ASUS Maximus Hero VII - less than a year old, again a great board, my first experience with a UEFI, practically idiot proof.

ASRock Z97 Pro4 - still collecting the parts so it's not even operational yet.

and MacMall swears that they have an MSI Z97 MPower Max AC on backorder for me...

I have the ASRock Fatal1ty Killer X99m board.

I bought it because I wanted to upgrade my X79 rig to the X99 platform, however keeping my existing 350D case. The problem was that no other board really fitted my red an black color scheme and had the features I want with such an overbuild VRM such as this one.

I would probably buy it again if I could. I have been recommending it to anyone who is the market for good and reliable M-ATX board, since imo the other options out there aren't really that great, when it comes to making a more compact workstation rig.

I guess Intel charged nearly the same money for Z75 and Z77, and motherboard vendors just picked Z77 so consumers would not think their boards were somehow less capable than rival Z77 boards.

Mobo: Asus M5A97 EVO R2.0

Why?: it was a cheap AM3+ board, with a decent enough vreg design to handle and overclock a FX 8 core.

Next to that, i dont care about dual gpu setups so 990FX was a bit of a waste for me.

Buy again?: No.

EVGA X79 Dark - love this board and color scheme. Rock solid. Only complaints are the IO cover hits any video card setup possible and the 24pin right angle plug while cool looking is a pain in the ass and scary to push against.

EVGA Z87 Stinger - bought this because I loved the dark and I wasn't disappointed. No complaints at all. This time IO cover actually fits with video card.

In this old build, I have a Gigabyte MA790GPT-UD3H with an AMD Phenom II x4 955 from back when Windows 7 was first launched.  Clearly it's showing its age rather quick.

Right now, I'm thinking of moving to an Intel 4790K build, possibly with an ASUS Z97 PRO, we'll see.

Motherboards I had

For my very first build, it supports 2 types of CPUs, either slot 1 or socket 370 Pentium 3s. Has no onboard audio as during that time it was not that good, the black slot at the bottom is a ISA used for ISA sound cards are ISA modems like from U.S. Robotics. And bios during that time aren't as smart as today's, the CPU clock, FSB, and ram clock has to be manually put in by flipping the dip switches located just below the ISA slot. Some boards instead of using dip switches, they use jumpers.

1scqcg.jpg

Asus P5LD2 Deluxe, got this right after my first board died. Did a major upgrade and it was also the time when Intel introduced their very first dual core. Got a Pentium D 820 with a 6600GT for Doom 3.

The underside of this has something called "Stack Cool 2" which suppose to help the board have lower temps. Don't know if that actually works. Has 2 PCIe x16, but only does CrossFire and no SLI.

2m3sr5t.jpg
156e0aw.jpg

Asus P5K Deluxe, in preparation for a quad core as my previous board does not support it. Really didn't like this one as the pair of x16 slots runs at some odd and unbalanced setup. Had it for a few months before selling it. It even has onboard wifi, but I didn't even bother using it.

21ah5oi.jpg

Asus Rampage Formula, ran this with a Xeon X3350, I don't OC, but this board does OC quite well and it was pretty easy too. 2 pair of x16 running at full x16/x16 with none of that half/half or unbalance PCIe lanes nonsense. During those times, cooling was very important so a lot of motherboard makers main selling point was the amount of copper used on their boards along with their elaborate heatsink designs. Also sound was equally as important, most say onboard audio is not good, so it has been removed and was included as a separated piece that ran on the PCIe x1 slot. In case if any one didn't know, the very first concept ROG board was called the Pluto.

2zxz3g3.jpg
5btxi.jpg
2dbp8k7.jpg

Asus Z87I Deluxe, my current board for my backup PC. It has 2 more SATA ports over the impact and cost less. One odd problem was, the system would randomly turned itself on, took me a while to finally figure it out the cause of it.

2vuk8pc.jpg

Asus X99 Deluxe, for my current main PC. great board, pretty and I quite like it. Will I buy it again? Maybe not as I've always like some of the features found only on the Rampage V Extreme. Too bad it lacks dual lan ports and that Extreme reused the same design as its previous Rampage IV Black Edition. What I would like for my future board is a combination of the X99 Deluxe and the Rampage V Extreme. X99 Deluxe for its design and dual and ports and ROG for its exclusive ROG features.
