"I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark"- Stephen Hawking

This will certainly be controversial but why do people think humans are entitled to eternal life/after life? . Do squirels have a squirel valhalla ? What about Dog Heaven?

Why are humans so special in this regard?

From more than 100 years of neuroscience we know there is a CLEAR link between consciousness and the brain. If the brain is sick or simply shuts down the conciseness is clearly affected.

Death to me is the simetry of birth , being dead is like being unborn .

Think about a normal nightly dreamless sleep , stretch it out to eternity so that you never wake up.

Thats what I think death is in a nut shell.

You wont suffer , you wont be sad , you wont be bored . Your brain is what creates this emotions and it will not be there . You simply wont be , wont feel anything.

Total and utter anihilation of the self and all feelings.

And before you say that you dislike that notion every single person on the world will die and become nothingness , tough cookie!

There is nothing you me or anyone can do so its better to make peace with the possibility I can be right .

Look at it this way you wont have anymore stress , any more sadness or heartbreak . You wont have to worry about health, sickness , success ,your house , your future

NOTHING.

Time and chance will get everyone and wether you make peace with that or you squim like a worm its indifferent , the end result will be the same.

If you had a last day on earth would you ruin it with fear and antecipation or would you cherish every single second until the end dying with dignity , peacefully and bravely to the end?

Relevant Quotes:

“Yes, death. Death must be so beautiful. To lie in the soft brown earth, with the grasses waving above one's head, and listen to silence. To have no yesterday, and no to-morrow. To forget time, to forget life, to be at peace. You can help me. You can open for me the portals of death's house, for love is always with you, and love is stronger than death is.”

“I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.”

“We are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been here in my place but who will in fact never see the light of day outnumber the sand grains of Arabia. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater poets than Keats, scientists greater than Newton. We know this because the set of possible people allowed by our DNA so massively exceeds the set of actual people. In the teeth of these stupefying odds it is you and I, in our ordinariness, that are here.We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?”

You can't futureproof yourself. Death is what it is. When it happens, it happens. And it will happen for all of us. I'm personally atheist, so I've never really concerned myself with afterlife or whatever.

Personally, I'd live it to the fullest. I'd do everything I could. I believe in a life after death, but if I didnt, I'd probably be fearing the end.

I'm not sure what  will happen after death.

I'm not expecting anything.

And  to be honest, I could not care less and I'm not afraid of it.

Doesn't matter what will happen. I will die on day and I'm not gonna worry about it.

I will think about it though.

I agree with the quote and you asking why humans think they're entitled to afterlife. Personally, I think that when I die, my body will be shoved in a six-foot deep hole in the ground to only be covered by the Earth. Nothing more will happen, my "soul" won't go anywhere, my mind won't drift into another body, I will simply cease to be anything more than a mass of something that once was alive. And I embrace that. I'm eager to see how I die, and eager to see if I'm wrong in my theories. Unlike most people who are afraid of dying, but I'm excited to. Sure, I don't want to die, but I'm excited to see what it will be like. I hope that I don't die until I'm much older, but I won't be bothered if I die young.

I want to die. But I already know there is no evil dude in the molten core. Or guy in the clouds. When you die you're in a hole in the ground. The end.

I believe after death there's nothing but a huge glowing "Respawn in 10... 9... 8..."

and after it you get shoved through a vagina, again.

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

Coincidentally,

Doctors gave my Grandma a few months at most to live.

My dad and his brothers have decided not to tell her the news to let her live the rest of her life worry free.

I wouldn't know any better in these situations :/

I fear death.

Actually that is a bit noble because this way she won't know that death is coming for her, the last time she will go to sleep she will think 'OK gonna take a nap now'

But she will not take a nap and go peacefully instead of having fear.

It pisses me off that when you die you die for the eternity. You are unborn for eternity. I want to fucking come back. This pisses me the fuck off.

Its the rules of the game , what can you do about it?

It can piss you off all you want , wont change a thing.

We humans are a powerless bunch.

Some would argue that its inhumane to not let her know, but I think family knows best.

"Melior est die mortis die nativitatis" - Better is the day of death than the day of birth.

This quote confuses me.

Its from eclesiastes .

I just have it because it sounds cool.

This thread makes very little sense....

Whats the point here? Everybody who is not religious believes that death is final....

I fail to see what we are going to discuss here?

I think I'd probably just live it out like a normal day basically, no point getting yourself worked up over something you can't stop. It's an immutable fact of life, just accept it and be ready.
