PSU's & finding the right one

Guest

Yeah, but the corsair is shorter, has overheating protection,  is 80+platinum and has more connectors.

And by the time the warranty will have expired I'll have upgraded my pc again so I'm not worried about that.

But since you recommended 1000 watts, I'll go with that.

Well it's why I say a 10 year warranty and buy as much wattage as you can so you can use it in multiple builds.  You pay more up front, but you'll get more bang for your 10 year buck.  But if size is the consideration, yes go for the Corsair.

Need to go 500w or more with that, if only because it's the minimum for the graphics card.  I'm curious why you're putting a dual core chip in that build.  More and more games are getting improved framerates with quad core.

Because... MONEY !!!

What's your budget?  AMD builds are cheaper and I can come up with an example of something in your window of dollars.

I want to buy a power supply that has 650W+, and has 4 6+2 pin pcie cables, this way I can hook up two 280x's in SLI . I think the corsair cx750m should work, but I'm finding it unclear how many pcie cables it can support at once. please help me.

450w? 750w? 1000w? What do you actually need when it comes to a PSU? Probably not as much as you think you do.

Buying the correct power supply these days is no longer as simple as buying the biggest one that you can afford. As technology progresses, the power draw of components is also decreasing meaning that the need for a huge PSU no longer exists.

80 Plus ratings

These are ratings of efficiency at 20%, 50% and 100% load. A PSU's function is to convert mains voltage AC current into 12V, 5V and 3.3V DC current. The ratings show the efficiency at which that process takes place.

It is advised that you purchase at least an 80 Plus PSU. However there is speculation that above that mark, the price difference between for example a 80 Plus Bronze unit and an 80 Plus Gold unit far exceeds the savings that will be achieved over a 3-5 year period.

Connectors

Though not really an issue with most systems, if you're building a multiple expansion card setup such as a 3 way graphics configuration, you'll want to make sure there are sufficient connectors on the unit. Further information can be found on the manufacturers website.

So how big?

For most single GPU setups, a 500-600w PSU is normally sufficient. Above there it really depends on what you're putting in. Pumps for water cooling can draw a decent amount of power as can fan controllers. This calculator often gives a good idea of what you need.

Haswell compatibility

Intel's 4th generation Core i5 and Core i7 processors; codename 'Haswell' have lowered sleep states meaning that the CPU will draw even less power than any previous generation of CPU. This proves troublesome for some PSU's as they cannot maintain a stable voltage on especially the 3.3v and 5v rails. Most PSU manufacturers by now have released an official document designating 'Haswell compatibility'. Read more here.

Great help!!

I have a question.

Would this PSU : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thermaltake-Bronze-Efficiency-Modular-ATX2-3/dp/B00BDBZH3A#productDetails

bo ok for

this graphics card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127789

?

And would you kindly explain to me this 8,6,6+2 pin difference. Would a PSU with two 6+2 pin connector be OK for a card that needs two 8 pin connectors?

Can someone tell me if thermaltake is a good brand?

They sell products that range from terrible to very good. In order to know how reliable a PSU is, you need to judge them by an unit by unit basis.

What particular model are you looking at?

Internally, it's a PUQ-B unit manufactured by CWT. It's internally identical to the CX750 and TX750M, as such, it's a solid mainstream platform.

If you already gotten it, just keep it.

I was thinking of finally swapping out my old GTX 560 after using it for three years. The new GPU I'll be getting will be the GTX 960, but I'm not really sure if my current power supply can handle it. What I have right now:

- i5 3550

- Corsair A50 CPU cooler

- ASUS P8Z77-V LX

- Corsair Vengeance 8GB 2x4GB DDR3

- WD Caviar Blue 1TB HDD

- Corsair CX500 V2

- Other stuff: DVD writer, 2x 140mm fans, 2x 120mm LED fans, and maybe another HDD in the future.

CPU: Intel i5 3550           | Cooler: Corsair A50          | Motherboard: Asus P8Z77      | Storage: Crucial MX200 250GB |

RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB   | GPU: GTX 1650                | Case: NZXT H440 (Red/Black)  | PSU: EVGA 650W G2            |

Yes. It will handle it easier actually, since the GTX960 has a lower power draw than the 560.
