PSU's & finding the right one

Guest

I think the whole power supply thing is way over done , My mum ran an old generic piece of crap 500w power suppy for ten years with no problems  in her system , only reason it got binned is because it was connected to the case and I built her a better system

Ya got to laugh at the bs what is it now platinum rated ?

Did she own a high end gaming PC?

Also that's just one experience...

No she owned a normal web browsing play scrabble on Facebook PC

Yes it's one experience , at least it's true vs let's spend £200 on a power supply (is it really needed )

Who knows for sure ?

A good quality 750W will be perfect and give you plenty of headroom for overclocking as well if you wish.

I had a PC for many years run perfectly fine off a crappy Dynex (yes, Dynex) PSU perfectly fine for the 5-6 years that I've owned it. And this wasn't some crappy internet browsing PC, this was a decent gamer for the time with an Athlon 64 X2 5200+ and 512MB 8800GTS, and I actually did game on it quite a lot with no PSU-related issues like sudden power off or reboot.

Another "one experience" but of course this is NOT saying to use a Dynex in a gaming rig today, always a good idea to buy a good PSU.

I will be doing a steep overclock on processor and graphis card

In that case you may want an 850W for the extra headroom, but what is your budget for a PSU, and where are you shopping from? If we know those two things we can help you pick a specific PSU

850W for this build is simply ridiculous. A PSU calculator (that's not sponsored by a brand that sells PSU's and actually makes more profit if you buy more expensive ones) such as this one tells us that if, and I had to make some assumptions here, Hicksongameing had his Intel Core i7-5930k @4Ghz 1.25V with 16GB RAM, 2x GTX 970's, 2 SSD's + 2 HDD's, a DVD-RW drive, 6 120mm fans + 1 140mm fan and a water cooler (I picked the Corsair Hydro H100), he'd use 543W MAXIMUM. Yes, it's good to buy a PSU with a little headroom, the website recommends a 593W (600W) powersupply.

You recommend 850W. I added another 2 GTX 970's, just for fun. Recommended PSU? 828W. So 850W is way, way overkill for a build like this. A bad brand PSU will not provide his advertised wattage, that might be a problem. Buy a good 600W, that's good enough.

Dude, relax. I know that a good 650W will be enough, but as I said in post 205 of this thread 750W already gives OC headroom.

The 600W estimation already includes an overclock (stock is 3.5Ghz, OC'd to 4Ghz) :)

Hey guys...This is my first post on here but I'm an avid fan/follower of LTT on YouTube. I have only recently gotten into PC building as I'm furthering my gaming needs. Basically it is nearing time for a new pc and I refuse to buy another pre built and just add an aftermarket GPU to it like I have in the past. So now I have for the most part configured the rig I'm trying to build but the one piece I'm missing is the PSU I really want. This is were I need you all's help.  Ok so I'm trying to find a:

Super Flower Ledex 750W Gold or Platinum Certified Fully Modular PSU (White Version) I live in the states and so far I can't seem to find it anywhere for sale.

I'm going trough confusion and I'd highly appreciate your guy's help/tips into getting the righ wattage ammount.

This is roughly my final build which I'll start buying into the next months.

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/7rPvFT

My only concern now is the PSU.

As far as I've seen, OCing a Gigabyte GTX970 (which I'll most definietly do) will drain around 300W, if not more.

My guess that OCing an 4690k will reach up to 100W.

Adding that to all the rest of components, summed me up about 520W.

But from other reviews and comparisons I've checked around, the GTX970 won't go over 250W. Or by checking guidelines, a single GPU build it won't need more than 500W

So what should I go for? An 550W or 650W?

hey marian

sorry i was out of action there for a while, i think a 550w poer supply if enough, just make sure you get a good brand as OCing need to be exact,

but if you were thinking of going for sli in the future get the 650w just to make sure you have enough Ws.

ps

from what ive heard seasonic are a good brand,

For a single 970 you a 550W will be perfectly fine, even overclocked. As long as it's a good quality one.

The Leadex isn't available in the US. There's only the rebrands we know as the EVGA G2 and P2. Unless you're willing to order from the UK, which is going to be quite expensive.

I need help for final decision on a PSU. I was thinking a Corsair HX1000i or HX850i for this: 5930K, and Titan X in SLI both with a overclocking. Currently have a Corsair TX750, upgrading for a full modular PSU.

Not considering price? Everything but AX and HX.

Considering price? Everything. All of Corsair's PSUs are overpriced for what you get.

EVGA's GS and G2 are great PSUs and cover pretty much any wattage range you'd need. The B2 is also an excellent option for the price if you're looking for something a bit cheaper and don't mind not having full molecularity or hybrid fan mode. Stay away from the G and B (G1/B1, without numbers) though.

Hello readers this is Leet. This time I don't have a video unboxing/review for you but a question, a matter you could probably help me with.

I need a new power supply to enable future upgrades on my main pc. I'll write the power-consumer parts I have and point to what I will be upgrading.

Here's what I have -> what I will upgrade too.

  • AMD Phenom II 945 @ 3600 MHz -> upgrade to AMD FX 8300/8320/8350 + OC (!in a few months!)
  • LC Power LC-CC-120 cpu cooler + CM JetFlo 120mm blue LED fan
  • Asus M5A97 r2.0 Evo
  • 2x 4GB Kingston HyperX Fury Black 1866MHz -> upgrade with additional 2x 4GB HyperX Fury BLUE. (not soon!)
  • MSI AMD Radeon HD 7770 1GB OC -> upgrade to a R9 380 4GB or a card from that range (!in a few months!).
  • SSD Kingston V300 120GB SSDNow + Transcend SSD340 64GB
  • HDD Samsung Spinpoint F3 1000GB + HDD Toshiba DT01ACA100 1000GB -> ading a SSHD in the near future (maybe a year!)
  • ODD LG GH24NS90b
  • 4 120mm case fans (1000-1400rpm, different models, no LED)
  • Corsair CX 400W -> upgrading now for something in the 520-750W range.
  • Asus Xonar DG
  • 6+ USB devices
  • Windows 8.1 pro x64 u1 -> WIn 10 x64 pro
Now, I have less than 100 € (EUR), more like 100 $ (USD). But the prices here are higher than in the US and many other markets.

That comes arround 650 HRK (Croatian Kuna, Kn).

One of my SSD-s and the ODD are in the 5.25" ODD spaces in the case. The rest (three, but will be four) are in the HDD cage on the bottom front of my case.

I'm telling you this because most PSU-s have 3 connectors on their SATA power cables, and that settup would be hard to manage if two drives were up and 4 down (would need SATA power extension cables or something).

I would like the PSU to be modular or semi-modular, but it's not a must. Flat cables would also be nice, but I understand they're impossible to find in this price point.

Warranty should be at least 36 months / 3 years, but 5 years is preferable.

Also, the build is black&blue themed, so please don't suggest RED PSU-s, PSU-S with green/orange LED, unsleeved cables, etc.

Here are the webpages of the cheapest shops/webshops available to me; I will link the pages with the PSU-s (sorted by price):

http://www.futura-it.hr/katalog/komponente/napajanja/

http://www.adm.hr/index.php?cPath=258_217_150&page=1&sort=3a&osCsid=8f00591dd67623dd92665b723d08753f

http://www.portio.hr/index.php?route=product/category&path=1_105_10522&sort=p.price&order=ASC&limit=100

http://www.centro.hr/kategorije.dac976f6fb3d4819a1f634feb3585392.napajanja.aspx?page=5&sort=PRICE_ASC

(beware, price should be arround 650 Kn or less, not more than 670 Kn!)

What would your picks be?

I wrote the PSU guide in my sig today. Was it a good one? Should I change things about it?

It's ok, I did not find anything wrong in it. :)

As for my question (look above), I've ordered a Fractal Design Edison M 550W and I will install it in a day or two.

If not going two way sli grab a 850 g2 (the cables are awesome) and you'd probably be safter with a 1000 g2 if doing sli. 850 is probably plenty for z97 two 980tis but for x99 it's too tight for comfort.
