[UPDATE 2] AMD Making An Announcement On September 25th."You ain't seen nothing yet"

This makes me sad, AMD will released a GPU that beats the 980 by 5-10%, and then Nvidia will release the 980ti that will crush anything. I like AMD, but they are a little bit behind on the gpu side.

Or, despite the odds, we could hope for a miracle and AMD will release something that beats the 980 by 20%.

I wonder if 3 GPUs on a single board is even physically possible? Like, ignoring its insane power consumption, could you even fit all the circuitry required onto a normal pcb?

Asus did one back in 2008 it was 3 mobile 3850's

Unless its a GPU that outdoes the 970 in power consumed to frames produced, AMD can fuck right off back to APU Ville.

They have even worse situation in CPU section, believe me. I wonder how they didn't go bankrupt even. Their GPU team is a bit better, but still loses against Nvidia. While Nvidia focuses on less power on their GPUs, AMD in contrary increases it & their cards are also very hot comparing to Nvidia. Plus Nvidia got lots of other features than AMD, like PhysX, VXGI, MFAA, TXAA, Nvidia gameworks & etc...

AMD does have alot of counterpart to NV features such as Forward+( a realtime lighting system), Adaptive AA, Bullet physic, tressfx (which 2.0 will have fur physics as well), grassfx, truaudio.

Yes amd's recent gpu line has been running hot but nothing extreme. when AIB coolers have been introduced, it all works out. Plus let not forget that NV has had a gpu line that ran hot as well aka the 400 series of cards.

You have to give them some slack they are fighting a war on two fronts, so supply of cash is spread thin.

But what about power consumption? Nvidia is doing incredibly well in this one.

but then again, some of us are not really concerned with power and heat, for example non ref users and WC users

Yes, 780 was better than 290x in power consumption, but 290x is a powerful card for a reasonably price. and for a loads of people it s enough

I do not know why people bash AMD graph department/ATi. They do deliver in the recent years, they have powerful hardware for reasonably price, their drivers are getting better, new technologies, it usually undercuts Nvidia in price in a serious way... they are a good option for gamers

It's not about if users are concerned about power consumption or heat, I'm saying that Nvidia get their cards better with power consumption at a time while AMD doesn't. Doesn't it look like Nvidia knows better how to make GPUs? Simply the card which draws less power & is cooler, it means it's better by technologically. AMD doesn't know how to improve their cards & they just push & push them, making them even hotter & power hungrier. And by the way, Nvidia new cards have awesome prices. So it's not the right time to say that AMD got better value cards. Not anymore.

1. I would say they use different ways at Technologies. AMD is more about raw power, whereas Nvidia tries to do i with more expensive technology

2. Compare the R9 series (so far) with the 7X0 series. The 9X0 will compete wit the new series of AMD cards

Agreed.

Amd has done a stellar job at keeping pace with nvidia.

People are either bashing them as they keep comparing the 9xx series cards with last years model r9 2xx series or are just fanboys.

Amd did show up and undercut nvidia last year forcing them to make a ti version of the 780 and cut prices massively since the r9 290x was a powerhouse upon release. People have short memories.

I think things will just get more and more interesting.

Well comparing the 9XX series cards vs AMD's r9 2XX series cards is perfectly valid if you ask me. The people who are doing that are comparing the best both companies has to offer as of today.

The 300 series from AMD is not out yet, and we don't know how they will perform (or what they will cost) so why bring that into the comparison? It doesn't make any sense.

Both AMD and Nvidia gets a ton of undeserved bashing, but they also get a ton of undeserved praise. There are fanboys on both sides. Hopefully I don't think anyone will deny that a strong AMD and a strong Nvidia competing against each other is good for us consumers.

i would like to see a new, more powerful FX CPU, but i rather see a new GPU.

plus that leaked metal cooler from a while ago, if there reference cards ship with that, i might get a reference for the first time. that metal cooler just looks soo good!, besides ill end up water cooling it anyways...

I think it's safe to say we can confirm new GPU's are coming from AMD. Roy's tweet easily confirms this otherwise he wouldn't of tagged NVIDIAGeForce. AMD might have something up their sleeve to battle the GTX 900 series. GCN 1.2 brings 2-4x better tessellation and 40% better memory bandwidth due to lossless compression. Hence why the R9 285 crushes the R9 280 with only a 256-bit wide memory bus compared to the 384-bit wide bus that of the R9 280. Speaking of which it is also cheaper to manufacture. If AMD launches the R9 300 series, Nvidia might have some stiff competition in the market when it comes to pricing. I also get a feeling Carrizo is going to make an appearance. We could see another game changer APU if AMD packs GCN 1.2 and Excavator into Carrizo. GCN 1.2 lossless compression alone may make a large difference when paired with slow system DDR3.

AMD just stop being so childish with this game 24 thing. If you don't release a card that out performs a titan Z for $300, then you're going to be laughed at. You've hyped yourself up too much to possibly live up to it.

They already have a card that out performs a Titan Z, and its well under half the price.

Please spend as much time writing your question, as you want me to spend responding to it.  Take some time, and explain your issue, please!
