A periboard 106M

i like that you can still buy just regular old white/gray keyboards like this, it’s rubber dome, it’s $40, whatever

but what I like is that it feels like the original stuff, it’s got the same plastic feel, the keycaps feel decent, the rubber domes feel the right kind of springy, this is very close to your average 90’s IBM ps1/ps2 series rubber dome stuff in overall feel

@8tg Dangit, I'm just reminded that I had a Lexmark BS (Buckling Spring) keyboard from back in the 80s/90s....but I just realized I'd lost track of it when I moved to my present apartment. Dang, it was my one and only vintage keyboard, and the only BS keyboard in my collection.

@QuantumSingularity Why do HVAC still uses rotary vane pump instead of oil free membrane pumps?

2 reasons - cost and efficiency. Rotary vane pumps cost less AND are able to produce much deeper vacuum than diaphragm pumps. Both have their use cases, but generally for HVAC where you have to vacuum big lines with a lot of air and you always want to achieve the deepest possible vacuum, you use rotary pumps. And when you recharge an entire system with refrigerant, you want as deep vacuum as possible, especially if it's gonna operate in sub-zero conditions, because any left moisture or air inside will freeze and in the best case screw up system's efficiency, in the worst case - f**k up the compressor. Diaphragm pumps i think are mostly used in chemistry, since they don't operate at a very large scale and near to perfect vacuum isn't all that crucial.

@QuantumSingularity The average membrane pump gets down to like 50mbar with other variants go down to under 5 mbar which is equal to oil pumps.

Large benefit is they are indestructible, lower maintenance and easier to operate: no gas ballast, no oil changes and less filter to change.  Worst part about some rotary oil pumps is that the oil leaks if tilted.

Membrane pumps have the tendency to be lighter making it the better choice for a movable pump station.

The benefit I see for oil is the lower upfront cost.

Latest purchase is a refurbished HP EliteDesk 800 G5 Mini, for my father as his birthday gift. He’s been running an ancient Phenom II tri-core system for years, and although it may hypothetically run Windows 10 it’s still on Windows 7.

So this new system has:

  • i5 9500T
  • 1x16gb 2666 DDR4
  • 256gb NVMe drive (DRAM cached, surprisingly)
  • Windows 10 Pro license

I’m putting an additional 16gb stick in, not because he needs 32gb of ram, but because single-channel is lame. I pulled the machine down and replaced the BIOS battery, and re-pasted the processor. I also am going to put a spare 2.5” 500gb HDD in there because he will use it to scan photos and will want more space. I’ve also pre-installed Windows 11 Pro on it and am currently downloading and installing drivers, so it will be ready for use.

I need to do the same soon, I did a SFF Elitedesk 600 or 800 SFF a while back with a i5 4590S in it and a low profile GTX1650, not because he NEEDS the GPU but because I knew the integrated on Haswell is basically useless now a days and a 1650 will be useful going forward quite a few years. I'm watching off and on to see if I can snag a 10th or 12th gen SFF Dell or HP system as an upgrade, something with at least 6 cores.

Work also needs to migrate to new hardware before Win10 EOL, meh that'll happen when it happens. I've only been mentioning it for like 3yrs.

My garage computer is an older EliteDesk mini with a 4590S, which for viewing shop manuals in PDF is going to work for a while, but some day I might move it up to a newer machine as well.

I built an 11600k workstation to use at my office a few years back, and have already upgraded to Windows 11. I built my boss a 1st gen Ryzen machine in 2017, which I swapped a 2700 into a few months back, anticipating Windows 10 EOL; Just have to upgrade the OS now.

That's nowhere near enough, 5mbar is 500Pa. This small cheap pump (because there are A LOT bigger and a much more powerful pumps), goes down to 0.2Pa or 0.002 mbar (2Pa or 0.02mbar of total pressure). Basically any pump will work on a normal home window AC where the line is 3m or so, but when we do 4way cassette installations for commercial spaces or multisplit systems, each loop can easily get to 40 or 50 meters on its own. Trying to pull vacuum on 200m of pipes + another 100m in the heat exchangers isn't for diaphragm pumps (even single stage rotary pumps struggle with large installations). They simply lack the displacement capacity and are usually used either as assisting pumps or as mentioned earlier as main pumps in chemistry or in areas where particle free pulling of gasses and liquids is required. I've seen some super expensive recovery stations using a diaphragm pump on the inlet side, before the compressor, but i can't say i see the benefit in that. It only adds cost to the recovery station. As to what i need it for - to simply remove air and moisture from small and medium installations, this small pump is perfect. My colleague has an enormous 5HP vacuum pump, but he used to vacuum KILOMETERS of pipes at a time. He used to lay the gas lines in hospitals through which O2 and other medical gases is supplied to the ORs and the natural gas flows to the homes. That monstrosity is almost 40kg though and totally impractical for day to day portable use.
