Let me guess.  The manufacturer brags about it being only .44" thick or something ridiculous.

It's an MSI GS66 Stealth with 10750H and RTX 2070 Max-Q. The GPU runs cooler than the CPU lmao. It is 0.71" thick. The fans already run at ~2700RPM no matter what I do in power settings and Dragon Center Shitter.

I would have used NT-H1 but have read the pump-out effect is pretty bad on bare die's and not suitable for laptops, regardless of what Noctua claims. NT-H2 is suppose to resolve this but have plenty of NT-H1 right now.

Not the latest, nor the greatest, seems like the cool thing to get for AM4 is the 5800X3D, but I want mine to be an all rounder. And after having an R9 3900X, I can't go back to 8C/16T, so I opted for a used R9 5900X which cost me about 280USD.

I just tested it on Serious Sam BFE (this game causes my 5800H laptop CPU to go ape shite at 102C, other games would only hit a max of 90C), with my 360mm AIO cooling it, I get about 75C max in an AC room set at 24C. I'm happy with it, don't think I'll go 5800X3D, but IF AMD ever release an R9 5900X3D/5950X3D, I might just bite.

I just ordered a Samsung Odyssey G9 NEO to replace my two aging 1080P monitors on my personal setup. I'll move the 1080P monitors down to my WFH setup, and move to the single ultrawide for my personal desk.

Messing around with component repair.

Spoiler

image.png.ba4a9c8ea2c012ce3f06bbf8c4b440f7.png

I have one more bid out on a motherboard, and a low offer on a 2080 and one on a 2080S.

So far, 2 R9 390s untested so might work fine, 2 R9 Furys and a 1070 SC Black, a Z590 Gundam edition, MSI Z590-A pro, and two MSI Z590 Pro Wifi boards. Boards all just need new sockets.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

What's your toolkit for these repairs? I've been curious about doing something like this myself but I'm always overwhelmed about where to start.

It's entirely possible that I misinterpreted/misread your topic and/or question. This happens more often than I care to admit. Apologies in advance.

I fixed my Z690 Aero G with a high temp heat gun I had laying around. Been eyeing cheaper BGA rework stations. If I lived in the lower 48 they'd be cheap to get. Most of them won't ship to Alaska though. My tool kit is 100% a mix match of heavy equipment tools/an ifixit kit. Before I mess with graphics cards I need to get a smaller soldering iron regardless and not one of the large "automotive style pistol grip ones." I've got my Fluke multi meter from my days of turning wrenches, and so far that's about it. I'm going to start tooling up here soon to take it more serious.

I've been really eyeing this station. Maybe it'll go on sale sooner than later.

It's basically just the "wrong tools for the right job" right now while I'm seeing if it's something I enjoy and if I can make it pay for it's self. Hardest part for me is shipping to and from Alaska. You can get replacement sockets preballed pretty cheap on Aliexpress with patience. $1-3 for 115x and 1200. $7ish for LGA 1700. Spare SMD caps and resistors can be had pretty cheap too without going to AliExpress.

It's time to start thinking about pivoting away from mining for me so I'm trying out things to find what I enjoy. My entire adult life so far(I am only 29 though) has been this one mine. I'm coming up on 10 years here and would like to get into a "safer" industry even if it doesn't pay quite as well. This all started because in a drunk stupor I tried putting the socket cover under the retention bracket on my Aero G and then forced it closed when it didn't want to close.

Edit: While typing this I snagged a mismarked Alienware Z370 non proprietary motherboard for about $30 under what it's been selling for. Z370 untested for under $40 shipped is hard to beat. Might end up being my baby test bench.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

It's connected to my tablet for the purpose of these photos because it's camera is ass compared to my phone (which is primarily what it will be used with)

it's pretty decent. trackpad is plastic which is no fun. but for how cheap i got it, i couldn't really care that much since i can make the phone a better trackpad instead.

touchscreen, 360 degree hinge, hdmi input as well for devices that can't do video over usb-c.

@Arika Smy coworker got one of these and went on for days about how he was gonna do all his work off of his phone through it and about a week later he gave up entirely

they are cool but they definitely have a niche use case where they’re really effective

That's why i waited so long before making the decision to buy one, but i actually have multiple uses for it, not just using it with my phone since it can also be used as a second monitor and a dumb terminal for my machines that don't have a display connected to them (yay dummy plugs)

it's basically a "throw it in a bag and not care to much about it" type device.

it's the uPerfect X 13. but it's basically identical to the Nexdock 360. literally the same thing, just different branding.

Finding one with an ISO kb might be pretty hard since i've also really seen the same few designs, meaning they are made by the same company and sold out to whoever wants it.

Are you still running a GTX 980 on that (going off your signature)??? I feel like it would start to show it's age nowadays unless you're not gaming with it.

I am still using the 980 for the moment, and yes this monitor is a bit outside the capabilities of the 980, however I'm planning on replacing the whole system shortly with a 13900k and 4080 or 4090; the monitor was just my first stepping stone.

I am still using the 980 for the moment, and yes this monitor is a bit outside the capabilities of the 980, however I'm planning on replacing the whole system shortly with a 13900k and 4080 or 4090; the monitor was just my first stepping stone.

That's going to be a great rig with that monitor! Congrats and I love that you're still using the 4790K (my first CPU I used to build my first computer with). Devil's Canyon really aged well throughout the years.

Thank you! It really has aged well. In fact even after I replace this machine it's still going to be used, I'm going to recycle it down to NAS/Plex duty. I think in that role, it's actually still a very viable processor.

That's really awesome to see that and repurpose the hardware, extending it's useful life. I even used a RTX 2080 on my Z97 rig to troubleshoot and worked really well there at 1440.

That's insane, I have always been curious. Would love to sit in front of one to try it out!

*edit*

was suppose to be a reply to the monitor, but apparently I do not understand the interwebs anymore.
