This new carbon nanotube material is the darkest thing on the planet

We know what darkness is: it's the absence of light, and something we each encounter when the sun goes down. Seeing darkness in broad daylight on the other hand, that's weird. It's also, astonishingly, a completely possible thing. Sitting on a piece of aluminum foil in Surrey NanoSystems' lab is something called Vantablack -- a low-temperature carbon nanotube material that absorbs 99.96% of all light that touches it. It's effectively the darkest material on the planet, and anything draped in becomes non-reflective, losing any and all surface detail. So, what's the point? This new ultra dark material uses a low-temperature process, which allows it to be applied to things like stealth vehicles or telescopes, allowing them to avoid detection or see farther, respectively.

wow that is cool

Its only black...

If you actually see it in person you would notice it is very very dark.

Your monitor can't display that obviously.

But it's a 3D monitor.... ;)

I should be studying.

Well either your dumb or a troll.

I don't think it is worth trying to explain it to you further either way.

I wonder what it really looks like.

Seeing as our monitors can't really get close to showing what that looks like.

It looks dangerous. very dangerous.

EDIT: for those who may not know why,  this material will make anything 99.96% invisible to radar, night vision, heat vision and the human eye in dark environments. That's a suit, plane, car or boat and weapons virtually undetectable by most modern scanners.

That's rude and pointless for saying.

I don't think you understand how sarcasm works.

I think this is very interesting for stealth applications - but I have to wonder about it's thermal properites - if it's going to be absorbing that much light, how does it react to that and is it going to be any different from other materials?

Obviously people haven't seen my heart.

Gray would be the colour if I had a heart.

I wonder what use this might be for solar power? Can the absorbed energy be harnessed?

Also: yes! Finally I can get myself a true black mage robe. A this really takes me back to the good old UO days.
