Birthday Bash Folding Sprint

Excited to be a part of one of these, I will set my reminders now to make sure the PC can fold all week.

 

Question I have actually,

My CPU while Folding sits around 84 degrees and I've seen it hit 90 once or twice, is this relatively safe over time or should I look at getting a nicer cooler to prolong the life of the CPU?

 

GPU hits max of 78 degrees.

Those temps are technically fine but what CPU/GPU do you fold with and what is the case/fan situation like? Obviously, some chips run hotter than others, but if you're folding with both CPU and GPU the airflow in your case could really be a large contributing factor.

 

On a side note, you may decide, as many of us have, to just fold on the GPU. They are MUCH more efficient at folding, don't dump as much heat into your case (and CPU), and can actually negatively affect your total PPD.

As @Captainmarino said, CPU folding doesn't earn much.

I found the easiest way to contend with this is under

Power Options / Processor power management / Maximum processor state /

set to 99% instead of 100%.

This makes the CPU run at stock speed with no boost, you can still fold on the CPU but it will be much cooler and a little slower.

When CPU folding, I run my 5800x in eco-mode with Ryzen master. It runs cool as a cucumber and don’t really loose all that much ppd do cpu power.

Oh cool another event. I wont go nearly as hard as fomding month because im broke from electric bills (almost 400 dollars for nov) ill at least throw my 3080 in

I'm just gonna tack on one Day and keep on folding for my Birthday as well. At least the Full power folding. Not throwing in the odd WU here and there.
I'm not going to be around to stop it anyway.
Now i just have to oil the machine a bit as well.

I have a Ryzen 7 3700x and a RTX 3060ti in a Fractal Meshify case with Noctua front and back fans for airflow.

 

I'm still using the stock cooler (i know lol) I've been eyeballing the NH-D15 for a long time. It can't hold up on those 100% loads

 

I may just run the GPU for now.

Sounds like it could get a little toasty in there. Those temps you mentioned seem reasonable given the components and setup. Even a relatively basic tower cooler may help a little over the stock cooler. It could presumably aid in the Noctua cross ventilation from the front to the back and be a little more efficient in removing the heat from the CPU.

 

That is, if you really wanted to CPU fold. Between the 3060Ti and 3700X, you're probably better off sticking to GPU only. It's way better for PPD and will drop the case temps (and fan noise!) quite a bit. If you're interested in CPU, you can fire it up for the BOINC Pentathlon this spring

No worries. This is just a little weeklong sprint with sign-ups going through January 8. You still have plenty of time to sign up. The event itself is running from Jan 10-16. Hope to see you on the list!

Never too early to start , getting everything re-setup to fold on the desktop today. Gives me this week to see what other nonsense I can find to fold on. Proxmox? Old Laptop? Junk Industrial PC's? Only time will tell.....

Yay! Perfect timing too - I just finished rebuilding a PC with a 3060ti. Happy to put those cycles to a good cause!

 

Side note, this was my first time installing F@H on Mint Linux. Got it working eventually but it was a bit more involved than Windows. (admittedly I'm not a Linux super user yet lol). Has anyone seen more effective PPD using Linux vs Windows?

The stats from https://folding.lar.systems/gpu_ppd/overall_ranks tend to show higher PPD on Linux.

even if only for stabilities sake, Linux is king. with windows things like updates and unscheduled reboots can really mess with your production. Linux just keeps on working!
