Yep, I bet some are going to come with the intent of scrutinizing.

This would be a good thing. No matter how you look at it, most of the issues come from the struggle where LMG has grown to be really big, but is partially still run as if they were in the Langley house. LMG needs to find a new way to run the company.
Reading some of the complaints about the last LTX, it was clear that the criticism of lack of professionalism, was also the case at LTX. I can't imagine how much it sucks that everything has to be done really professionally, but that's part of being so big. So hopefully that will lead to a more organized LTX.

I cannot come cuz I don’t feel like going over to Canada since I don’t have the money. But I am excited for you guys 🙂

I like computers. And watching them blow up while playing GTA 5. Remember to update to Windows 11! 😁

TL:DR: LTX as it was done this year will not happen again. no matter how much prep or planning they do, the strain on the team leading up to and during the event is just not something they want to keep doing. and while profitable, the opportunity cost just doesnt make sense. (opportunity cost = the time investment that could be used for something else instead)

but whale lan will continue to exist in some form, possibly with workshops/shows/event type stuff tacked on the side.

they spoke about "not going forward with LTX 2024", i suppose that leaves the door open for 2025, but it seems extremely unlikely if there isnt a massive change in the direction of LMG as a business towards doing in-person events.

from what i read between the lines of what was said on WAN show, colton (who is head of business development) essentially veto'd LTX 2024.

They'd probably have to hire an outside event coordination company to handle most of the logistics for them.

from what i gathered, they had a lot of outside "hands" on LTX 2023 just the same, but if you want the event to be your company's event, you'll have to keep at least part of it in house.

I don't agree with this, you lay out a large document for the events company and have ongoing communication. That is standard in event management

I believe what Linus was hinting at, he has spoken before about his new badminton facility also being a location for LAN parties.  So rather than renting out a convention center in downtown Vancouver, hold smaller Whale LANs (almost an LTX Lite) more frequently at the badminton facility where the owner is a cool dude and will let them do whatever they want without the crunch of prepping the rapid set up and tear down that has to occur at a convention center.

I dearly wish I had gone this year.

But thinking about it... a small lan party up there would be way more fun and less stress.

I have always liked the idea of a convention being about tech people meeting, talking, and sharing projects, instead of boring product launches and "visions". LTX is that.

I completely understand Linus and the team's reasoning.

Although I wish I had gone this year. I was planning to go to LTX 2024.

I guess I will be there for LTX 2025!

there is another year between now and 2025. LMG could decide to change course and do LTX for 2025. And honestly, I really hope they do. LTX 2023 was my first ever in-person event, and I loved it. It's a shame its not happening again in 2024, but I do understand why. However, LMG could literally just hire an event planning company like ReedPop (who holds major events like PAX) and have them do most of the event planning and work, without forcing the team to crunch. Would make it a lot easier on the LMG staff.

it wouild still all need to be organized by (presumably) colton, even if the partner does ALL of the work, they cant take decisions for LMG. decisions such as:

- layout (in broad terms, actual square footage is for the partner)

- sponsors

- partners (peopel with stands at LTX)

- event size (how much and which venue to rent)

- financials (ticket price vs number of attendees vs how much hands the partner is allowed to put on the project, etc.)

- LMG-sourced enternainment options (build your own screwdriver, live wan show, in person merch, ...)

it's easy to replace hands on the ground, but if the very top of the management pyramid just cant anymore, it's time to can the project. (to remind; it sounds like colton veto'd it)

I can see LTX becoming more of a every 3 to 5 year thing. Honestly this would be the best route as planning these things unless you do it as a full time gig is a very taxing thing to do. More time between LTX's would give the team more time to plan and prepare then a year. Way better.
