Does HP like to get SUED? || HP is blocking third-party printer ink again...... ||

Summary

HP tries to push a update that disables 3rd party ink card ridges once again

Quotes

Quote

HP is preventing more customers from using third-party ink with their printers. Numerous reports scattered across Reddit, Twitter, and the HP community forum suggest that a recent printer firmware update is blocking the use of non-HP ink as part of the company’s stringent “dynamic security” policy, as first reported by Ars Technica.

My thoughts

Does HP like to get sued or what?

Just by looking at HP their history and their FAILING battle against "3rd party ink" they do this every 2 years or so. Then say they are very very sorry, pay a fine, and think people just forgot they pulled this crap 2 years ago.

Looking at their history of trying to block 3rd party ink, every 2 years or so, It fall right in line with the timeframe of when their scam subscription called "HP instant ink" was released

There is a CLEAR pattern of HP doing this, even when they get told over and over again that this is Illegal.

The fines are also quite negligible, meaning HP can just pay it, and go on their merry way of repeating the same thing every 2 years.

In order to make HP understand that this cannot happen again the fines should  at least be 10% of their global revenue [PER EU COUNTRY]

And do people stop buying HP printers because of this? My bet would be that they've determined that they can ride reputation and just pay fines and do PR to manage it.

Do they necessarily have a great reputation? My last many printers have been HP, but it's only been because of their Linux support.

I wonder if the portable "bubble jet" HP printer I have would be a model that blocks 3rd party cartridges. Considering that several times its cartridges had the ink dry in the outlet rendering them completely unusable (you can't unblock them without disassembly) - meaning that when my mum had it she went through several due to the infrequent use.

And that was within 1 charge of the battery. Meaning that she probably spent more on cartridges than the (expensive) printer cost due to its jets being shit compared to all of her Canon and lone Lexmark printers.

Maybe I'm super lucky, but I've always had great experiences with HP products and customer service, which is why my last three laptops have been HP and never had a major problem.

Maybe you are, the last HP laptop I owned was made of metal but the chassis was warped out of the box. No damage to the box etc so retailer wouldn't accept a return, they wanted to blame me but wouldn't use those words directly and told me to speak to HP. HP as you can imagine wanted nothing to do with me and pointed the finger back at the retailer and basically said "You shouldn't have bent it".

I used the laptop as it still functioned but after a year I ditched it for a Lenovo.

Until I built my own desktop PC  again I had HP laptops and before that Compaq (when I didn't have only a surface pro which has always been a secondary comp).  This is a great reason to by an older laser printer that is pre DRM.  Plus drivers will be mature and available if you use anything other that Windows.  The older "win printers" of the late 90's that had no brains of their own maybe not.

This should not be legal and I hope they get sued.

the laptop and printer divisions at HP are completely separate divisions FYI. There is not much that they have in common in terms of management and people until you get very high level.

Brother barely handles printing, too busy worrying about that than DRM locking Ink lol

I jest but I bloody hate Brother printers.

Has been years since I last bought ink, got a Canon Laser Printer and never looked back, sure the upfront cost is massive, long run it is cheaper and has been cheaper.

It's B&W only as well since I personally never needed to print colored, if I want pictures to hang on the wall I usually go to a professional since I tend to want those pictures to last and look good.

They're a company whose design/engineering philosophy seems to be "it'll do..." and are notorious for cutting corners... and I'm not talking about the physical design of the Spectre line, either. Personally, the last HP I owned is the Envy 15 in my signature, which still does work, but it's a plastic pile of "Meh" that's very much showing its age, through excessive wear for the relatively easy life it led. I was disappointed when it arrived, as well, because it looked like it was aluminum, but the finish is just made to look that way.

*Looks over should at 3 brother printers all working as advertised out of the box.

I think we've had this discussion before, if I remember right it was their commercial line up that was terrible to work with but their domestic range was good.  The reason I have 3 is the 2 inkjets (A3 and A4 multi-function) both use refill ink from ebay and the other is a laser for PCB work and general printing that I also refill from ebay.

Nah just the " HL-2130" laser printers, because they seem to reproduce like rabbits and then you have 300 of them and trying to be used like a high volume multi function printer copier designed for that amount of work lol

AHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhh nooooo, keep away. The horror!!

Haha anyway, they are actually fine. I just don't like when business try and buy lots of them rather than higher end ones that last longer and have network ports so they can be print cost tracked.

Can I first as why people are still using Ink printers and not laser?

I think one of the reasons is of HP their shady marketing strategies. where they claim ink printers are just as good as laser printers.

Not disclosing that the ink dries out after a few months of not using it.

they also make their Ink printers dirt cheap, while making Laser printers 2-3X as expensive.

thus people think OH I can get a cheap printer for XX$ instead of XXX$ for this more expensive printer.

I bought a canon color laser printer during covid.....Higher initial cost but cheaper in the long run. Loving it. Never going back to inkjet

TBH id say the proper way to fine companies is to size the fine so big that they just barely survive it.

The only reason I see is that for the same amount of money you can get massively better picture quality with an inkjet. The colors are simply more accurate and vibrant. But then again, how many people print pictures themselves? 🙃

I personally bought an LED printer from Brother. Screw lasers.

Unless you are printing photos it really doesn't matter. Good colour laser actually has excellent quality anyway, never been disappointed by my Ricoh. Used to have an actual photo printer with photo ink and paper etc but like.... it died and since it never got used I don't have one anymore.
