deafboy

I own about 60 games and around 3 of them are pirated, i dont buy movies, i stream and watch tv shows on Netflix, the last CD i purchased in a store was back in 2010 with a few itunes purchases since..

The only reason I pirate the things I do is because the TV episodes I want to watch aren't on Netflix and they are charging a arm and a leg on amazon instant

deafboy,

You could also poll how much % of time you spend on the pirated content. Because the polling may be very very different And I bet on an interesting correlation.

When it comes to games, I mostly pirate for Trials. I saved myself tons of money like that, especially with games on Steam, where very few these days seems to have a demo available.. Not to mention how often Demos are just select parts of a game, if part of the original game at all, so not really worth it if you really want to get a feel of the game before buying. I buy the games I like. (Got 228 games on Steam alone, not counting Origin, GoG and a few other places...) Last game I did that was Thief, tried it, got bored of it during the tutorial.

For music, pretty much all of it is music that the authors distributed for free.

For movies... I don't watch them, nor do I watch TV, there's nothing that interest me there. I got access to Canadian Netflix because a friend is sharing it with me, but never use it. (Not that there's anything even worth watching on Canadian Netflix)

For books, I mostly read light novels from Japan, things like Sword Art Online, which were fan translated and put for free on Baka-Tsuki. (SAO was removed lately because it got licensed for distribution outside of Japan)

And as for softwares... I buy my "mission critical" softwares, like OS, Anti Virus, Backup software, etc... most of the rest is pretty much freeware.

So overall, writing all this... I'm actually surprised by how little pirated content I have on my PC... Oh wait, got 200GB of Pr0n.. nevermind.

I used to pirate some things, now I simply don't. If I can't afford it or I don't like the DRM, I don't buy it. Thats why the music industry is slowly getting fucked.

Spend on pirated content in what context?  That could be pretty convoluted as it will vary depending on what it is that's being pirated.

My dad has always had this simple saying that pretty much forces you to do the right thing (plus the fact that he's a cop).

"Let your conscience be your guide"

For those who don't have a conscience I say "Good luck to ya!". :P

There are few times I pirate, but to say I never do it would be a lie.

Music - I do not pirate music. I mainly listen to smaller bands, so I believe in supporting artists who I enjoy listening to.

Games - I do not pirate games.

Software - no pirating here.

Movies and TV shows - now here is where I pirate content. I have a very hard time finding HD content online that I can purchase, other than from Google (but then I can't watch it all my devices easily, and would need a network connection). ITunes will not allow me to purchase HD content either.

Because of this lack of accessibility, I can't always watch what I want. We do have a Netflix subscription, but Netflix in Canada is limited.

Honestly, if someone was to make a good distribution network, without DRM (because I like going from my computer to phone to tv), I would subscribe to it, and wouldn't pirate anything.

personally i pirate all my music since i dont pay for songs , i pay for concerts. SInce i go to quite a few festivals and concerts etc. Also i pirate software due to being young and not having the money to spend ridiculous amounts on software. However i buy all my games since with steam whats the point in pirating when theyre are generally so cheap

Being a student, I pirate due to a lack of money. I pirate music most of the time, unless someone gives me an iTunes card. when it comes to movies, I don't watch many, plus it seems strange to pay $15-20 for a 2 hour experience when I get 8-50 hours out of a game for the same price.
I don't pirate games however, with things like the humble bundle and Steam sales, it's not too hard to grab games for an affordable price. The only time I do pirate games is when they're 10+ years old, at which point I don't think the publishers/producers of the game are going to be too worried about losing income from it.

in the context of your life-time spent on either pirated or bought content.

Well frankly, this whole polling this is convulated by the lack of options.

But It still worth a go, thats where I'm coming from.

Pirate only before I get the cash to actually buy it., like I trial. I listened to Lostprophets Start Something, Nine Black Alps Everything is and From First to Last From First to Last and bought all 3 on Disc. Pirated Dissidia Final Fantasy and later bought it, same with NFS Underground Rival and MGS:Peace Walker. If I really like it, I will buy it eventually.

My suggestions tend to lean towards value, not outright performance, keep that in mind

I don't pirate anything for two reasons:

  1. It's unfair
  2. It's why we have DRM

I'll also be the first to say I don't have that much money to spend on games or music, I'm 14 and my parents don't buy me things or give me money 'just because', and no matter how bad I want them I never pirate them anymore. Simcity, a game I really enjoy, is a perfect example. It obviously had horrible DRM, but I payed the money for it anyways. A lot of people pirated it just because of the DRM, but imo this is counter productive. High piracy rates just make investors that don't even understand how gaming works put pressure on companies like EA to prevent it. (Remember who you're dealing with here!)

The main reason I stopped pirating though was that I realized how unfair it was, especially to smaller developers. I would always promise myself that if I really liked it I would buy it, but never would. By the time I had the money to pay for it I had already moved on to playing a different game I pirated. If everyone paid for their games, then the industry would be much better than it is now. Lower prices, no DRM, less need for stupid DLC that should have come with the game, etc.

Gotcha.  I left the options kind of generalized because I didn't want a full on questionaire and fill everyone's screens.

I have never pirated in my life to be honest. I earn money, which I then use to buy what I need. (mostly monitors, Photoshop CC etc). I usually buy games and if I dont like the game, then dammit. But I dont play a great deal. So no, never pirated. Weird to think .

So I voted but in defence the easist way to play an out of production game on the snes (or any other old platform) is emulate it and find the rom. Other than that I have bought every game I have.
