Sigh... I gotta feeling I'm going to be babysitting her this coming month

I do have some 390s coming and a pair of R9 furys coming. If I can get them fixed, I might look at getting something Ampere to try to fix for a cheap additional card. I'm starting to mess with component repair anyways, so might as well try it. 

You can find 3080tis in various stages of broken for under $350. 2080tis for right around $250. 

My 1080 is a pretty generic HP OEM model, and so far I've been running it at stock settings. It's impressively cool and quiet for a lower end design. It's been more than a month since I last folded on it, but IIRC it was getting around the 1.5m PPD mark most of the time. I haven't tried to tune it at all (core clocks, memory clocks, etc.), but I might try to mess around with it when I get it back. The person who has been using it for the past month has been using it for 1080p 144Hz gaming (yes, I'm aware that the 3080 they own is incredibly overkill, they had money to spend and wanted something that will last), and as far as I know it's been perfectly stable for them. 

 

I do own a couple 20 series cards (a 2070 Super and a 2080 Ti, both HP OEM models with blower coolers), but both of them are broken. I bought them cheap on eBay to mess around with, and I'm hoping that maybe I can get one of them stable enough to run F@h. I might need to try Linux since Windows usually refuses to load the drivers for either card. They do have hardware issues though, and I just haven't had the time to get out the heat gun yet. 

 

Are those old AMD cards still worth using for F@h? The Fury was a pretty power hungry card, and I can't imagine it gets many points per day. Could be useful in the winter though.

I think the electricity to run them is slightly less than the propane I would use for heat otherwise.

Ah, I see. I pay more for electricity than I do for natural gas for my furnace, but my house has some incredibly uneven temperatures depending on the time of year. I'd rather be able to concentrate the heat where I need it and not have to heat rooms I'm not using.

My electricity has only gone up roughly $0.01 in the last 2 years. Combine that with a front room with too many windows and awkwardly large ceilings, and propane at about $4.50 a gallon, F@H has been very nice to me.

When I got my house in 2019 I was paying 0.10 and 0.09. Then it went up to 0.10/0.11, and now our all time high. 

Here's the front room from pictures in the original listing. It's not so much that the room has high ceilings, it's just kind of cavernous with 2 walls that just let heat out.

But being in Alaska I've got options for heat. Central air is propane which I mostly run off of. F@H in that living room to keep that side of the house warmer, wood stove up there(which has literally saved my life last winter), and a diesel toyo stove in one of the bedrooms on the back side of the house to warm that side if I don't want to run as much propane.

Decided to install Linux mint xfce on some old hardware to run in the basement.

Having some trouble getting it to recognize the GPU.

The OS recognizes it, and gladly found the driver (GTX 760), but it still doesn't show up in the webclient.

Having some trouble installing fahcontrol but found quite a few resources to troubleshoot that.

 

Why on earth did I think it would be easy?

 

This is a good objective for me to get to know linux a bit better.

You're probably missing the OpenCL drivers and/or haven't enabled the GPU as by default it is disabled.  I think CUDA isn't used on the old cards so its probably not that?

Haven't touched the command line yet but this is going to be my first step.
