To me 6 cores is the bare minimum on a new rig to be confident for it to last 2+years and be able to game + discord + stream without bottlenecking the CPU

4 cores are still ok right now but may be soon not sufficient even for gaming alone, some games need/use 3 cores or more, and it will certainly become more than that in time

depends on the use-case, but 6 cores are enough for most things nowadays and will be for quite a few years.

I have a 8700K. And I am certainly beginning to see the struggle when paired with a 3080 Ti. It still functions pretty well but for another 3-5 years? Hell no 😄

6 cores can be enough for streaming but depends on the workload you are going to stream, You might have a smoother time with 8 cores on streaming but it's enough if you utilize with your GPU Encoder as well

 

as for if it will be useful, As others said depends on the CPU but for Modern ones yes 6 cores should be enough for around few years to come but now that consoles have 8 CPU cores on their APU, we will eventually see games that might benefit Very significantly with 8 cores...

I don’t know anyone who streams their game.. seems pretty lame to me. 6 cores is fine.

I don't stream off the CPU, and in 6 years most people likely won't be. Nvidia and AMD are both increasing the encoding capabilities of their GPUs generation by generation, Nvidia has had very good encoding capabilities for a long time too, with very minimal impact on CPU resources.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

I have a 4C8T machine that is still useful. I just bought a Steam Deck, which is 4C8T, and it's still useful.

 

6C should remain relevant for a few years, at least.

 

Having run a 16C32T machine for the last few months, and gaming on it, I can say that dumping more and more cores into chips isn't a thing yet, at least not for gaming. In the future, possibly, just not yet.

6 cores became Meta with Coffee Lake.  That's why I have an 8600k.

 

When the i5 goes to 8, that will be the new meta, imho.

Relevant for regular usage, not for gaming or productivity. Though It's not so irreleavant either. But I would not call even the high end Ryzen 4 or Raptor Lake CPUs to be very good at gaming in 6 years or so. At least in games that release 6+ years from now.

I do disagree slightly; My E3 1280V3 (Haswell 4C8T LGA 1150) is really useful for video transcode; I can toss a project on that machine that will run the CPU at 100% for literally weeks, and it never gets over 63°C. I don't game on it, but that's not it's purpose anymore, anyway.

Can't really base everything off of core count, current gen 6 cores processors 12400/5600X is marginally faster than a 6 core processor from 2 gens ago, such as the i5-10400. 

More of how fast each core could compute, current 4 cores processor such as the 12100 is on par with i9 9980HK in Cinebench multicore, the i9 is an 8 cores processor.

That said, since the current consoles have 8 cores, I think, best to get at least 6 cores current/next gen CPU for future games.

But a 12400 or 5600 will work 2.5x times faster and not get hotter 😛

My 5950X will do it 10X faster, but it does... get... hotter. Lots hotter. o.x

 

The other issue is that a 12400 or 5600 would require an entirely new platform, and the board, RAM, and CPU would cost more than the $100 I spent to pull an i5 out and replace it with basically a 4770.

 

My poor Xeon is getting replaced soon, though. Probably with a 3900XT (which I already have). We'll have to see, I want to upgrade to 10g ethernet, and I need lots of storage, so my options are somewhat limited, sadly. I had considered Threadripper, but... Probably not.

The 5950X shouldn't get that hot, you can just limit PPT or TL to keep it at whatever temps suits you

It's in a MicroATX case with a Noctua D15 air cooler on it. In the summer, it was getting toasty, during the winter it stays cooler, and I can run it with PBO enabled (ECO mode in the summer for temp control).

To be fair 8700K is getting up there in age now.. 5 years is a good run. It’s a good cpu, just getting a bit soft that’s all. Heck I ran my X58 for 9 or 10 years and it was okish. What killed it for me was no GC in SSD Raid 0. Then I moved to 3770K and ran it for about 3 years before I bought 3600XT, then 5600X, then 5900X, and back down to 5800X3D tomorrow. But.. a 5900X boosting to 5150MHz on air is faster than a frozen 6GHz 8700K in Pi 32M. I only know that through some friendly competition though. My 5600X system is boosting to the full 4850MHz. Still pretty sweet. I like it.

It's already past that. 12600k is a 10 core; although 4 are E-cores without hyperthreading.

E cores do not count.  I probably have slept with more supermodels than there are programs optimized to take advantage of E cores.
