Older generations is one thing.  The point is it is NOT the same thing and it was named so in a deceptive manner to take advantage of people that don't know what they are buying.  The average consumer isn't going to know there is such a huge performance difference.   That is basically fraud.  Its no better than naming a GT 1030 ddr3 a "4080".  Where would you draw the line? Would that be ok?

Those are probably scam listings.  No one is actually selling a 3090 for under 900 right now.

C'mon dude.  All the ones with international shipping are scam ones.  They set the location to international with longer handling time so they can hopefully get the payout before ebay bans them.

It's not fraud. You're free to determine what you're buying. They're not pretending that it's something it isn't. Again, names are meaningless. It's up to you to look at the actual specs and inform yourself about what you're buying. Is it needlessly confusing? Sure, but so is literally everything about PC hardware naming in pretty much every product category.

As for myself, i don't even buy SE or A phones new

 

I get em on swappa for cheap.

 

My wife and two kids both have 2nd gen SE's I got in mint condition for under $250 each, and my Pixel 4a was around $200 mint as well.

iphone 14 128GB

iphone 14 256GB

 

Do you expect the 256GB iphone to have a 30% faster CPU? It's highly deceptive, period. Ofc the consumer has the responsibility to check, but there's a clear intent to mislead consumers for sake of a higher margin.

Obviously they can call them whatever the F they want to. But at some point it's inconsistent with branding and is a disservice.

The 4080 16gb model has 27% more CUDA cores than the 12gb model, but it's still called simply a 4080.

 

The 3080 12gb has 3% more than the 10gb model. It's still a 3080....seems fine. 3% is not really significant.

Yet somehow Nvidia determined the 3080ti which only has around 17% more CUDA cores than the 3080 10gb should be called a Ti. 

 

It's just inconsistent. Again, of course they can call it whatever the F they want to.

But consumers absolutely have the right to criticize them for it. Which is what we're doing.

Well it's the same GPU with marginally less defect CUs and similar. Meanwhile the 4080 "variants" are different silicon alltogether.

techincally correct but i'm gonna keep pointing out how cut down the 4080 is on a AD103 which actually feels more like a 104 based on cuda count, it's always been the same die of the xx90 til this gen iirc, a gpu cut to less than half of a 1600usd gpu should not be 900usd. Nvidia's intent is clear.

The iPhone 14 is basically the same as the iPhone 13, they just called it something new because they have to release a new series every year. For all intents and purposes it's the same phone. You didn't make the point you intended to make. You are being misled everywhere. That's the point of marketing. And naming is part of that. Apple also released that new Mac Book Air with a much slower SSD on the bottom tier machine after switching to 256 GB flash storage chips. On paper, all of the machines are called the same, but one undeniably has worse performance than the others. As I keep repeating, names don't matter.

So what are you actually arguing about? If you say, "well, people need to do their research", then threads like this and the discourse here will help to act as "research" as it pertains to relative product releases, prices, and specs.

Interesting pivot. I argued that names are meaningless and that arguing about them is silly when you should instead focus on the actual performance you're getting. You and others tried to convince me that names are important because this time around, the two 4080 models feature a different die and that matters, for some reason. Then you personally came around and just admitted that yes, Nvidia can call their products whatever they want and now you're asking me what my point is? You're being misled everywhere is a very very mood point. Even as a rather tech-savy person these 80 variants is actually where I fell for the trap. I saw the leaks a few days ago on videocardz and was wondering "why the eff do 4GB of VRAM difference cause 30% higher TDP" until a friend pointed out they are totally different GPUs.

While even Apple made it crystal clear what the differences between iphone 13 and 14 are, for the sake of coming back to your take.

Except your point flies out of the window when including the iPhone 13, because it's the same thing under a different name but offers no performance improvement. It's the inverted issue, different name, same performance vs same name, different performance. It's the flipside of the same coin, which is why I brought it up. Also, nice of you to ignore my MacBook Air example where it's the same name but different performance on actually different storage sizes, which maps directly onto your example of iPhone 14 storage sizes.

Bottom line - it's confusing and deceptive to name two things with vastly different configurations the same thing. 

 

If Nvidia felt the memory capacity difference was enough of a change to justify a name change to specifically identify that difference...why not specifically identify the more important change, the CUDA core configuration? If the specs don't even fucking matter at all, why even bother giving them different names at all? Just name them both 4080 and be done with it.
