Isn't a Mac a PC?!

BaconComputing

I think this is just becoming a circular argument...

Not true, the concept I'm trying to express is that in the collective consciousness the term "P.C." mainly signifies something different to the thing mainly signified by the term "Mac" so the one shouldn't be confused with the other.

All thumbs are fingers but not all fingers are thumbs.

As I say, at some point it does just become a philosophical question.   ;)

No it's not, just use the correct terms.

But that's the point and that's why it's a circular argument. Peoples beliefs as to what are and aren't the correct terms is constantly in flux, as is language which is why, at some point, it just becomes a philosophical matter.

By definition, a Mac is a PC. However, it has become popular to refer to Windows PCs as PCs, and Mac PCs as just Macs.

It depends wether it's about the OS the computers run or the actual hardware. I mean components are more over the same in any computer it's really just the OS everyone is referring to or hating on.

Macs are PCs , this whole Mac and PC difference is more or less created by a marketing team for the lay person, similar to how iPads are marketed as being something other than tablets.

Well i am just saying, i don't call my phone "razr" i call it phone, i don't call my camera "powershot", i call it camera. I just don't like how people treat apple products in a different way like for example when i watch a review on youtube. But i guess you are right in this society you do call Apple products by their name. It is weird but that is how it works.

Also i don't hate on Apple, my mom has an iPad mini and i think it is a good tablet i just would never own an apple product myself.

You know you are on a forum full of intellectual tech people when they completely over analyze what a few words mean for 4 whole pages. On another note, from working in auto parts, this kind of goes along with the whole thing about how some people call every suv a jeep which gets on my last never but it seems normal to them. It is all about perspective I guess.I would think most people that have macs would be annoyed if you called there mac merely a pc.

Technically yes...

PC == Personal Computer..

Is it socially accepted as a PC, hell no.

Actual definition is "personal computer"

But generally, the term means a Windows or non-Mac system or machine or "personal computer".

No one actually uses PC as personal computer anymore and just refers it to Windows machines.

Limited expansion options, limited physical options, limited performance options, limited configurations, I could go on...

This is just a laptop problem in general. You can use and always have been able to use whatever the hell hardware you want in the Pro desktops.

Well if a Mac is a PC then why the @#$% did Apple make their comparison commercials Mac VS PC?

Because a Mac is not a PC,  the stinking company even thinks the Mac is not a PC so go complain to Apple and either set them straight or call a Mac a Mac and a PC (non-Mac) a PC.

<grumble, grumble...>

Straight up marketing. Just straight up marketing. The company made the distinction to sell more Macs. It was a brilliant idea because of how complicated windows machines were (and still are) perceived to be.

Aside from marketing there is little distinction hardware wise. You can find many of the same parts used in Macs in other computers, and likewise just about anything will work in one. They use intel processors and allow you to install whatever the hell OS you want. Macs are personal computers.

Nope, they drew the line in the sand themselves, no one forced them into it. Marketing or Hard Core Definition they stepped out of it.

Basically, as I understand it, the meanings of words/terms change over time depending on how people use them and what people expect you to mean when you use them. The term "P.C." has come to be accepted by the majority of people as a word or term that refers to a Windows Machine or an "IBM Clone" with Windows (or other operating) system installed. Can a Mac be considered a computer that's personal to you and for your own personal use? Absolutely. Should you refer to it as a P.C.? No, because whoever you're communicating with will almost certainly think you're talking about a Windows machine or IBM clone.

If you install windows to Apple hardware can you call it a P.C.? I would say yes if you're talking about software related issues (since what it's running on theoretically shouldn't affect the software's operation (or we can only hope it wouldn't)) but I would say no if you're talking about hardware because a Mac has different hardware standards/requirements so you'd need to make it clear you're talking about a Mac and not a P.C.

This thread needs to die in a fire,  The actual definition of a personal computer has been solid and unchanged since the first one existed.  Just because apple made a marketing distinction between mac and pc does not change the meaning of words. All it does is show how stupidly sheep like people are to believe what apple insinuate to be the case.

Majority of people think that apple invented the first smart phone, but this is not true.  (this occurs in my world freq.)

Majority of people think that cold weather is what causes the common cold, this is also not true. (look it up if you don't believe me)

majority of people think apple invented the mouse and the windows desktop, these are not true. (again  look it up)

Just because people are stupid does not make what they believe to be true.  A pc is a pc,  any computer that can be operated by one person is a "personal computer" and thus a PC.

And all the answers here:

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Exactly, so if Apple chose to be dumb then we need to make sure its known all the freaking time.
