Damn they take 15%... Nicehash takes 1% and offers a much better UI, metrics, remote control, and has an entire OS

There has been mention of a dislike of Norton for a while now and I would really appreciate a recent comparison of available products and your team's conclusions. Forcing the user to have a subscription to allow mining is bad enough, but 15% fees?! Do Norton really think people are gonna choose that over other pools? 

I would be interested to see Linus cover other mining software and cryptocurrencies, a video on something like XNO would be quite good as its feeless and uses some interesting tech.

While not an in depth evaluation they did a video about the performance hit an antivirus gives and redirected for more indepth looks to go to https://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/ since the expertise of LTT is not really that kind of cybersecurity and virus analysis.

I've been using Norton for years, I had no idea it was so disliked and I don't really know why (eating your PC resources it looks like?).

Does anybody have any recommendations for other anti-viruses? I have less than a year left on my current subscription so opting out seems like a good idea?

I appreciated the video though it helped me uninstalled the executable.

Appreciate the info thanks.  The thing is I can find a dozen articles on line that all have dramatically different opinions on what is considered the best.  How would we know what to trust as each and every site may have paid bias.  For example they often link to sites to get software and take a cut in the process. 

Having respect for LTT I was hoping they would be willing to do the "homework" needed to give an unbiased opinion.  If LTT gives the opinion that a protection suite is bad I'd hope they could say what is good. 

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond and I do appreciate it.

So, Norton seems like a bad choice, but the idea of using my GPU to mine while I'm not using it sounds good. What should I be looking at? NiceHash sounds good, but if Linus doesn't even want them as a sponsor then maybe I should keep looking. Any suggestions?

Their conclusion would likely be "Windows Defender and common sense." 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Norton isn't bad as an anti-virus,there is just imply no point in using it as windows defender, which is free, is also just as good.

The amount of people with GPUs to make mining remotely worth it (aka earning >  $1/ Month, mining) and people who use norton products, also don't overlap

Apparently the minium specs you need is for mining w/ norton is a DGPU w/ 6GB of VRAM, Idk who tf they think their target audience is, no one with thoes specs is using the aboslute abomination of norton.

Regardless of crypto's inclusion, I can't take seriously anyone who's still parroting the same 15 years old bullshit about Norton with "you should never install Norton" and "avoid Norton". Their stuff has been top performing for many years now and there is still an option for Antivirus Plus which is just antivirus and firewall without much extra crap. It's 2022, not 2006...

Linus dropped them as their sponsor because Linus' audience are mostly gamers, and what gamers hate right now are miners

Though I suggest looking more into it, specifically whether your hardware is suitable to do it

While nicehash advertise that it's newbie friendly (it really is), I'd say it takes at least some know how of how to take care of your PC to really do it the right way and not damage anything

Maybe things will change with the lab but also I think they straight up don't have any writers or current employees who would be qualified to really do an evaluation on anything other than the effects on game performance. You really want security analysts and other jobs related to cybersecurity as experts when doing that kind of video if you don't want to be fact-checked to oblivion.

This (the OP and video) does nothing to fix their deservedly bad reputation.

I guess I am the lucky one - for the better part of 7 years now I've been doing F@H with four GPU's in my rig.. and have NEVER touched mining or even considered it. The sheer obscurity of it all and pitiful returns are the biggest turn-off. But the fact that mining has resulted in both a GPU shortage and price hike since the first crypto boom back in 2018 shows that the practice is having a much bigger and substantially negative effect on the entire PC community. This goes well beyond the average user. In fact, it hurts the average user - I am unable to get a replacement GPU now should one of my aging cards fail. Assuming I do find one, I'm paying $1800 for it instead of the $800 these were running for previously. And then I've only managed to get one card, not four identical.

 

The advent of mining farms is perhaps the biggest example of where this madness has led, and just like illegal weed grow farms, is a catalyst for all kinds of shady activity. It's no surprise you need to be at that scale to become actually profitable with crypto and get rich quick. These locations aren't being kept secret because they fear their expensive equipment - it's because they're most likely stealing electricity and don't want to be caught. You certainly don't expect to find thousands of antminers inside a barn in the middle of a field... and then discover the owner was receiving subsidized electricity meant for agricultural use.

 

Maybe I should have bought 10 water-cooled 1080's back when they were first available for $800/unit and sold six of them a year later brand new for $1600 a pop. Pretty sure there were many out there who made a nice buck that way profiting off the situation... and still do today.

 

Don't think that guy in the black leather jacket is so innocent either. Why is it that nVidia released mining specific cards at prices way higher than gaming cards... and NOT the other way around??? As long as they can profit off of the situation they sure as hell won't be doing anything any time soon to help things get back to where they were. Yet it would be a pretty simple fix to nerf a gaming card to make it unsuitable for mining similarly to how Quadro cards are optimized for what they do.

 

Norton/AVG/McAfee all have their issues - I stopped using them years ago. Even without the bloat and resource hogging they would constantly nag you for updates/upgrades, refreshes and a never ending stream of pop ups to move you over from their free version to a PAID subscription. There is a limit to the madness and BS I can put up with from a single piece of software getting in my face all the time and stopping me from getting what I need done.

I think forcing a mining application in an antivirus is a bad idea, it should be optional and something the user can install themselves. Also a 15% cut is a complete scam.

Well Norton ruined any reputation they had for being a decent antivirus, pushing a mining app on a paid antivirus isn't helping them any.
