Good move. Many months ago I contacted per email about product development and how I really think that you should do something in this regard, and how I can help. But I didn't get any answer. Maybe, or clearly, the reason was that my email was declared as spam!

Yes!!! Automatically rule out some items as just plain bad (at any price) but I’d also love a price to performance rating of sorts. For example, a decent performing case goes on sale is definitely worth it more than what a one time review would reflect. Same for pretty much any component; a 5800X is not very compelling at $450 but $330 (as I’ve seen it recently) is much more compelling.

Cool to see this, the thing I would personally want to see most, is data especially on things that are not covered enough. There are so many things where it's a pure guess if it's good enough / what is better. The cable test is a great example of that.

As for my own knowledge of tech: as wide as the ocean and as shallow as a puddle is a good description.

If you are actually planing on reviewing like a LOT of things and are going in this for the long-term, make sure whatever review appears now is easy to find a few years later.

 

Few ideas that come to mind. Most of us don't upgrade every generation, usually we buy new hardware,use it for multiple years while multiple generations go by and then upgrade. It is REALLY difficult to figure out the actual performance improvement you will get when you upgrade.

 

Let's say you have a 4690k and want to upgrade to a 5600x. We know the 5600x is better, but we don't know how much exactly and unless you have the resources to properly copy the review method from whatever source you are using and take time to benchmark your current system. To do it properly is for the average person almost impossible. Having a website where we can just select older hardware that's benchmarked with current methods and whatever new hardware that you want/can afford so you can do a 1:1 comparison between your old and new hardware would be very useful.

 

These days we have to rely on reviews that look back on this hardware which is usually 1 review or video and that's it. And because they are so rare you usually find nothing when you want one with current hardware. Good luck finding any review that compares older hardware to 12th gen Intel CPU's.

 

I would even go as far as to not make it available in video (or you can, but not JUST video). Give us a website that allows you to select whatever hardware you want, old and new, so you can compare it properly.

 

Also monitors, there are sooo many out there and most of them don't have a proper review. And when they do it's all about luck to see if it gets compared to the other monitors you are considering. I faced this issue a few weeks ago, I was looking at a MSI G27C4, MSI G27C7 and a MSI G27CQ4, apart from the CQ4 being 1440p and the others being 1080p, they were identical! No idea what the difference was! Let alone knowing objectively which one is actually good and which ones are actually shit. As mentioned monitors can be objectively reviewed which is nice, but please if you are going to do this, try to make it easy to compare them. If you have like 100 monitors reviewed (which is actually really not much if you look how many of them are out there) and we want to compare 3 of them, make it easy for us to do so.

 

I would say, use this as inspiration https://www.rtings.com/monitor  if you want to do reviews properly and do the investment, go all out, blow our socks and sandals off.

Yes, for most employers yes, but in the video linus says he can afford practically anyone if they have the experience. If they make $100k salary now, then the video suggests Linus will match that or go higher.

This rules. Making product testing more scientific is a really important step for LTT. You should put salary ranges on your job listings though.

Issue is that userbenchmark is known to give results that make no sense.

Retesting every CPU, GPU or whatever should be normal, software changes. Patches change performance, new games are being released constantly. Changing/optimizing of the testing method will/should be a daily task, but if you want the ultimate benchmark database and do it properly, you don't have any other choice. If LTT want to go full out on the lab, it should be used basically constantly. The more (useful) data the lab produces the better.

First of all I just want to say that it is truly amazing to see LLT going to the next level. But after seeing all the LLT Labs stuff, I'm just wondering why LMG has not started a news website. I think this could be a great place to put all the result of their findings. They could also integrate this into TechLinked, like for example: having a short version about the findings in the TechLinked video, and then at the end of that part link to the "LLT News" website. But that is just my view on it.

There are a lot of untrustworthy or inconsistent content, like userbenchmark

Having another trustworthy scource would be great. Plus, another GN quality benchmark channel would also be great.

How many componets are there?
Every year for the past decade AMD and Intel have released like 30cpus between the 2.

Thats insane to test, and thats jsut cpus.

Add all the diffrent Fans, cases, coolers, phones and the like, and itd take months to just retest old shit when they change the methodology (even if its done silmutaniously). Not to add the new stuff theyd have to test.

Now, if they did something like continuing to do a few legacy things like keeping a game  or two (like CSGO and SOTR) a couple benchmarks (like cinebench r23 and puget bench) and making their own brackets for using the same cooler on new/old sockets, so you can compare vastly diffrent stuff, id get it. Making everything compairale wouldnt be a option, imo

I think thats part of the point with this. 
Instead of their more indepth stuff being a video, its on a website. Maybe it could be news as well, but most of this is going to be deep indepth reviews on everything

This is amazing news and sorta nostalgic as it reminds me of Linus and LTT back in the house days. I think this will really help LTT grow into a respected and established news source and expand their audience outreach. As for jobs I could be LTTs private industry leaker as I'm staring at Intels new GPUs on my desk next to some AMD MI200s with a sprinkle of confidential Samsung PCIE SSDs lmao

Wow my perception totally was that LTT is moving to the exact opposite direction, alwasy getting closer to casual content. (like Linus said: entry for new tech enthusiasts) The start of the Short Circuit channel was a huge indicator for that imo.

 

I'm always happy to see more technical (and especially OBJECTIVE) reviewers popping up, Gamers Nexus and Hardware Unboxed already do some great work in that segment, but more is definetly better.

 

There is a lot of misleading marketing in the tech space and 99% of the manufacturer's claims simply cannot be tested by the standard end user. So the only weapon we have is the knowledge we can gather from technical reviews. And educated buyers can then vote with their wallet.

 

Sadly i'm not qualified myself for that kind of work, but i really like what LTT is doing here!

This is exactly why they SHOULD do this.

Because it's insane nobody has done this so far. Most of us use old shit because that's just how it is. Their exact testing method is of course up to them but it should be more than cinebench and 2 games.

I doubt ltt actually needs a sound & video designer/ manipulator, many big creators are still 1 man teams with no colour correction etc.

Thats something that can be sustained, keeping the same methodology and set for long term comparisons (say remethodolisize that every 5 years) whereas retesting a bajillion diffrent things when they update methodology every year for everything isnt.
