Ltt isnt just one big channel.

Its 6 big channels, 2 companies.

They dont need one, but they have high production quality.

Like they have, what, 6, 7 video editors, and god knows how many camramen

So here's what I want to see,

 

Everyone's talking about the "year of the Linux Desktop", yet I've searched for reviews of linux PCs on, well, everywhere, and there's just not anyone doing them. Linux PC Manufacturer System76 just released a new all-AMD Linux laptop, and I haven't seen a single review come up anywhere. I want you to set up to review these new Linux machines the day they launch, and compare them with similarly priced and/or quality Windows and Mac machines.

 

A quick Idea for your benchmarking lab, forgo the mechanical arm and do it all at the software level. Write a .bat file or the equivalent on mac or linux to run all the tests the computer needs to run, have the computer collect and aggregate that information, and make it generate a report on the performance.

I am long-time viewer, but registered just now to show support and hopefully to positively contribute to discussion.

 

As a data/statistics professional myself, I am especially excited that you are hiring a full time data scientist. I also think that LTT should consider to double down in that direction, and hire a separate person responsible for data representation/visualization/communication, because data representation/visualization/communication in this context may be even more important than data collection and more sophisticated experiments.

 

The idea below applies to journalism in general, but even more to tech-journalism, which on average relies on data (quantitative comparisons) even more.

 

I think one the best things that happened recently to hardware comparison in video games which I have greatly appreciated on the channel (or other benchmarks) is addition of 95% quantile metric in bar charts, and I think all of the data should be treated like this. I think this metric is far more informative than just maximum/minimum/average or whatever other single number charts had before. In fact, I think you should give even more parameters of FPS distributions you collect in each experiment. Give me full ridgeline plot (https://altair-viz.github.io/gallery/ridgeline_plot.html) and also confidence intervals and 95% quantile, median, etc. If you think that's too much visuals you could put in the video, put boxplot with whiskers (https://altair-viz.github.io/gallery/boxplot.html). Those, who work can read these chart would appreciate it, those who can't, can just skip them and read a number.

In any case, please publish all the data you have collected, so I could download it and calculate some statistics on it myself if I want to dig deeper.

All of this requires additional work of course, but not a lot. After you have properly coded a data pipeline, 90% of it could be done automatically. It could also be a feature, which is available for extra money, for example.

I would say they should look at utilizing people online and remotely - from simple things (LTT coin :P) to paid tasks, topics. This could vary from topic suggestions ("I bought this product and those are the problems, claims, benefits..." on some moderated channel which could spun off a bigger investigation) or hardware access to do required testing remotely by the lab team. This could also be an opportunity for smaller writers and content creators to showcase their work to LTT team and if deemed good - pushed forward either via the LTT channels, lab work or other social media.

 

And then developers for specific paid tasks or co-authors of some articles/research papers etc. Being fixed to one location narrows down available options, and after Covid a lot of companies now hires for remote positions or for temporary tasks/projects.

It's tongfang/clevo most of the time so you can find reviews of those, while for given distro screwups you can read Dedoimedo. Some laptop reviewers already started covering "Linux compatibility" sections (Jarrod Tech for example).

On Linux (mostly) there is Phoronix Benchmark Suite. It's for regression benchmarking, performance comparison, server/system integration testing and whatnot. End users can also run benchmarks, see nice results and compare vs others... yet even with all it maturity it's quite easy to get flawed chart if you trust automation only.

I think is awesome that LTT is going to get down to the hard science on some of its testing. 
 

Is the intent here going to be sharing with the community all of the collected data? I think that would be incredible. 
 

I am an engineer myself and enjoy applying my tech skills to water cooling at home including trying to predict how performance might change if I swapped one radiator for another. But since around 2016 detailed water cooling testing seems to be missing. Things like performance, pressure drop, etc don’t seem to be tested anymore or rounded up and it makes it more difficult to decide what is a good option. If that data such as that was shared with the community I think it could benefit everyone (watercooling is just an example).

"LTT is about to change" but can it change the industry?

 

In my opinion it's unfair to claim that LTT will be able to claim to be objective without posting the sensor data from known-good sources via something like Project Alvarium and having multiple identical test sites. I'm not saying that LMG should be the ones that have to create the additional testing site, but they should completely open-source their design of the thermal/sonic chamber (including Bill-of-Materials) so that other independent labs can at least hypothetically reproduce their results. Additionally, the code they use to collect this data in a public cloud should be open-sourced as well.

 

It isn't outside the realm of possibility that multiple companies can collude to change the outcome of the testing of a product. The idea is that we should design any testing system wherein game theory makes it so that two competing companies are less likely to want to risk their reputations and lose competitive edge in terms of testing integrity. I think LMG is probably the best group to possibly pull this off first, but how they do it will set the tone and hopefully the bar.

I'm soo happy to see someone take control of the BS marketing we as consumers get fed! I support your work, holding these companies to stringent honest reviews will improve the products in the long run as things I believe have got a bit out of control. you deserve to make money from your business and with you reinvesting a lot of your capital back into the business you deserve to make 10x the investment or more, and i have no doubt you will. I however don't think you need do this by monetising your viewers. either by merch or being advertised to. a great idea is for ltt to make a standardising scheme. look at how bad 80+ is. if LTT sold ratings based on what consumers can actually trust and what is actually important! It would kickstart the industry into an overall positive direction. imagine buying a tech product with a ltt rating on the side, make the companies pay for it, gone are those scandals of swapping chips and other components after you got your certificate and by the time a consumer gets the product it is completely different.

It's a good idea but the tech industry is the wild west so implementing an industry standard is damn hard. Only select institutions with established history and accreditations like IEEE or ANSI really drive the force. There's already a low level of ratings that user review sites use like DamnGood by Hardware Canucks or GN Certified but those don't mean anything if the reviewers are 100% vetted and scientific to the utmost possible

I fit the requirements for one of the jobs but the problem is that i live in a different continent 😞

There is also my knowledge of fluid dynamics in addition to that (I mainly focus on Aerodynamics,but Hydrodynamics and other fluids are fine)

Sounds fun, but a few more years of college left. 

Also instead of a robotic arm, please please just emulate an HID using an arduino or something, that way it still takes place off the hardware but is over 100x cheaper and better

 

also, Here's an idea for the LTTStore lab: For things like the power bank, manufacture them yourself! There is a really cool project I follow for an open-source pick and place machine that works really well. It is very cheap in comparison to the alternatives and works well for this kind of mid-scale manufacturing

It's really nice to see LTT moving towards professionalism because they are stepping into the measurement game which is the reason I trust sites like rtings, AnandTech and AudioScienceReview. If they really wants to measure soundbars and speakers in general LTT needs to buy the Klippel NFS (which is also kinda overkill?). Let's see how it turns. I'm really excited!

Machine Learning Benchmarks

I found LTT because I got into machine learning and needed to know more about GPU's. While I love the info-tainment of LTT, I don't actually game that often. However, I've become an avid LTT consumer anyway; their content is just so good.

I would absolutely LOVE it if in this new lab you included some level of machine learning benchmarks. There are a bunch of standard models for consistency. You could partner with someone like SentDex to help decide what models / methods are worth testing. Ideally, I would love to see how various hardware combinations actually effect machine learning performance. When I'm searching for parts, it is impossible to find someone who does as thorough of a benchmarking process for ML as Linus does for gaming.

You've got the resources, and you're reaching out to industry professionals, I really think you could make this happen, and be a pioneer in that space.
