Why does "No" ever need an explanation? Its still no, no matter why... Without rules there is chaos.

In case of our rules, any addition after "no" is to expand/clarify where the line is. If you haven't ever been in situation where you are in administration or housekeeping role, it may be harder to understand why such is needed. And even now, we constantly get "but it's not explicitly said" arguments when members get slapped.

I got a question, are there any enforcement about throwaway accounts like people do on reddit? I am starting to see hot takes from accounts just joined forums to post steaming shit.

What exactly is the problem here? That they're a new member or that you don't like what they posted?

Creating multiple accounts or trolling is not allowed;

  • No trolling or flame-bait.
  • Only one account per person, except with explicit permission from forum staff.

But there is a difference between trolling and just posting something you disagree with or something you think is dumb. We don't ban people just because they're new to the forum or because you think their opinion sucks. If you don't want to see their posts add them to your ignore list.

Are we allowed to help on threads that depict pirated shit in screenshot and other media (such as logs)? Because legally one could argue its aiding and abetting.

There isn't a rule against helping someone that you think has committed piracy, just rules against helping with piracy itself. If the issue they're having is because they pirated it, they shouldn't get help, but otherwise helping is fine (but you are of course free to choose not to help in that case).

Doesnt that include constantly posting a new message instead of editing the current one? Even if there isnt a newer response? We used have a system that would auto merge posts but that was disabled few years back.

If it's excessive then feel free to report it, we generally do ask users to stop doing that. Usually it's just a difference of expectations, especially for users who are used to discord style messaging.

Are there guidelines regarding linking your own Classifieds posts in purchase advice threads (outside the Classifieds section)?
I want to be absolutely sure I'm not breaking any rules by posting my own "For sale" thread in reply to others' posts.

This is covered by the Classifieds Guidelines:

Quote

As per the Advertising regulations, you cannot create a post anywhere on the forum to explicitly "advertise" your classified ad. You can however have a link to it in your signature as long as you adhere to all other signature rules.

Trades posts are only allowed within the classifieds section. Nobody wants situations where somebody makes a classifieds post and then goes through New Builds & Planning spamming threads with messages "Buy my graphics card!" to advertise their classifieds post.

If you see somebody post inquiring about something you're selling and you think they may be interested, send them a Private Message to discuss it. Don't just spam a bunch of people with messages though.

We won't talk about specific cases, as you know.

In general though, it is not against the rules to be wrong, but we don't want people to be constantly posting things that are misinformation/misleading/misguiding, and would want to address it.

I apologize if this is mentioned somewhere / is common knowledge.

Do past/expired warning points factor into the favor of the banhammer at all, or are only current warning points considered?

Yes, they are taken into account, but have less weight (and it decreases the longer it's been).

Hi

Noticed cracking isn't allowed but that word has multiple meanings, cracking of software and password cracking.

So my question is password recovery discussions allowed, this kind of borderline of blackhat/whitehat or grayhat.

Specifically own forgotten password from extracted hash files?

I know from experience this can be none regulated even by law in some countries, and strictly enforced in some other countries.

What does Canadian law say? would be interesting and what does the forum policy guidelines say.

In a whitehat perspective, in a scope with out giving out the secrets to the art it self.

We don't allow for helping in password recovery, bypassing etc regardless of ownership of device in question.

    • Redistribution of copyrighted material, including links to third party hosting sites, is not permitted.
    • Discussion of piracy in general is acceptable (e.g. "Game X becomes the most pirated game ever").
    • Hackintosh discussion is permitted.
  • Discussion on engaging in hacking or cracking is not allowed, including:
    • Bypassing security features, restrictions, or filters (including parental filters, school restrictions, or workplace monitoring), including on your own device.

If I understood guidelines.

If someone ask where to find "x" game that is 90's and company abandoned that game and doesn't sell anymore however in flea market game gets sold but in impossible price.

So providing source of the game is not allowed however providing source that they have to search themselves and that source is not piracy website but archive website is that okay or nah.

I'm sure its not but making sure.

I'm jank tinkerer if it works then it works.

Regardless of compatibility 🐧🖖

To both of these, its bit in between. Sharing sources as in linking to ROMs is not allowed. Sharing guides or helping on essentially breaking DRM is not allowed. Talking about abandonware in general, like what is and what isn't, talking about sites which claim to list these, linking to Internet Archive. Those are fine.

The problem with abandonware is that unless developer confirms it or releases the code, its claim made by someone. I could claim that GTA1 is abandonware, but Rockstar might think otherwise.

ok thanks, clarifies it I guess.

Just out of Curiosity, what does Canadian law say? in this matter.

I am not based in Canada, and professional Curiosity in this case seeing it can actually very different from country to country...

(Maybe a good topic for a YouTube video?)

I have been into countries where VPN services to bypass local blockade, can give you a 50k USD fine, true story, even got a screen shot of that.

Not trying to raise heck but say the developer and the DRM are both bankrupt, kaput, defunct, dead, and it requires online DRM to work?

Doesn't matter. Rule is that breaking DRM is piracy. Regardless of what the situation is. You will find bunch of other sites if that's what you are into. Only if developers or other copyright holders have stated it to be fine, then it's fine. But as with other things like this, in terms of moderation, blanket bans are easier than picking and choosing.

Generally speaking, as long as you stick to the following core principles you should not find yourself subject to disciplinary action:

The following is not an exhaustive list of the rules and guidelines that must be followed when participating on Linus Tech Tips. The rules outlined below are only the minimum expectations of members and not every issue can be predicted and addressed here, so conduct could still be considered out of line even if it isn't explicitly covered here.
