Russia threatens YouTube ban for deleting RT channels

Defying suspension

In the Russian argument, RT DE had already received a warning from YouTube for breaching coronavirus misinformation guidelines.

It was given a week-long suspension from posting on the platform.

During this time, RT used a second channel - Der Fehlende Part - to upload content which also violated these policies.

As a result, both were deleted by YouTube.

But the move may have repercussions.

Internet service providers in Russia can limit or block the flow of data to websites, as instructed by the government.

The state used these powers in March to restrict access to Twitter after Roskomnadzor said it failed to remove around 3,000 posts allegedly involving banned content.

In May, it also threatened to slow down YouTube for failing to remove videos it said were ”unlawful”.

“YouTube has always had clear community guidelines that outline what is allowed on the platform,” a spokesperson for the platform said.

In August, Sky News Australia was suspended on the platform for a week after posting videos that denied the existence of Covid and encouraged the use of unproven and potentially dangerous treatments hydroxychloroquine and ivermectin.

 

My thoughts

Awkward one this. While I am against censorship there are some cases where it is needed. If a channel persecutes anyone for their beliefs, sexuality, race etc then it needs to go. The list is quite big and anti-Vax miss-information stuff should be included as potentially it can cause a lot of damage. We saw this in the UK when MMR vaccine was linked, mainly on social media, with autism when there was zero scientific basis. It has lead to a huge rise in measles and rubella here with some very sad outcomes. So in this case I hope YouTube stick to their decision whatever threats are thrown at them.

Every time I see RT"news", it's almost always fake news. Just like RebelNews in Canada.
But boy do they fight to be allowed to post their BS everywhere.

Russia, by calling Youtube to reinstate this fake news channel, is announcing to the world that they stand behind all of the garbage they come out with.

 

I hope Google reinstate the channels, just to shadow ban them. That way they can say "look, it's "back" on Youtube". But then nobody can find their stuff.

That has it's roots in a peer reviewed study that eventually turned out to have cooked data. So there was a scientific basis once, but not anymore, unfortunately the damage was done.

 

As for the rest, this is politics.

depends on the news.

one should be allowed countries to speak out or back to the rest of the world.

But sometimes it's not even news, just propaganda and to make someone look good.

 

Which is an issue to the US control of social media... they could make themselves look good, or just accepting their sources of information.

However there are certain things they don't do, and why we or the US platforms have the "golden rules on the internet", were other countries or super powers would disagree with or not want.

 

And yes this is going to become politics and stuff about it.

You can tell when country is ran by people who have no idea how technology works. I sadly live under a authoritarian government that has more than 200k blocked domains and everyone knows how to get past around these bans, and I mean everyone (There was even a government official who presented a video from one of the blocked sites during a meeting). At that point what is the reason for keeping them banned? They just become another line of code in my route tables.

In my opinion this is pointless as the root cause to make someone believe vaccines give you autism is not stemming from Youtube. It's simply an outlet where these issues can be more widely viewed. As said by others too these bans do nothing but add an extra step to bypass it. I also find it funny when people are anti censorship or against tech companies making their own laws until it's something "bad" then they go full PATRIOT act supporting them. It's like the US spying on Hauwei to see if they are spying on them, a bit hypocritical if you ask me

Should be a two-way street. If they want to block us from their markets, we should return the favour. Not only with multimedia but with all rules when it comes to operating businesses. Dont say you love free speech here when your country has none.

The channels were not deleted for spreading misinformation, they were suspended for spreading misinformation. The channels were deleted for violating a suspension by posting to another channel...

I definitely agree with this. There are some forms of speech that are not protected by the US Constitution's First Amendment such as yelling "FIRE" in a crowed building (when there is none) or "ACTIVE SHOOTER" in a crowded space (when there is none). Speech like this can cause serious injury and death, and is therefore not protected. Spreading misinformation about the efficacy of the vaccines, or the danger of COVID-19 is akin to this in my mind.

 

In my opinion, someone who chooses not to vaccinate based on misinformation and who get's sick and suffers serious medical consequences for that choice, should have the grounds to sue the distributor of the misinformation for damages.

That's a massive assumption and not true for every case. That's the same mentality as out of sight out of mind. In some cases the news of a ban creates more new attention than what it previously had. Combine that with anger/frustration and now people will be driven for a cause they didn't support before the ban. So no this still does nothing except maybe bring the baseline of technological literacy up as things like VPN use becomes mainstream

Youtube isn't news media, and thats the problem with this, youtube is acting as a publisher instead of a media platform if they choose to ban channels.

You can't even imagine what kind of level fake news Russia backed channels are pushing in neighboring countries and also producing locally.

Some channels loose licence because of the stuff they show in news is so ridiculous, just to stir the pot and make those countries their biggest enemies.

Did you know that Latvia was the second biggest threat to Russia (after US) according to surveys in Russia (before Ukraine happened)? Country with 2mil people and 2 tanks.

That's how they tend to build picture of neighbor countries, events happening in the world and such. Covid is just one tiny bit of that.

By removing the content now they're only bringing more attention to it, I think youtube never should've allowed the channels in the first place, this seems like anti-vaxer propaganda, and the channel was probably posting misinformation before.
