OnlyFans suspends recent policy change amid huge backlash

After huge backlash from pretty much everyone and most of the internet agreeing that OF was a dead platform come Oct 1st, they've announced they are going to suspend the policy change, no info was given on when or if the change will happen now.

OnlyFans makes its money by taking 20% of all payments made to its content creators.

The main problem with the policy change overall was a lack of clarity. Certain creators were told different things with screenshots saying the porn ban would only apply to the apple app store version of the service, some saying that it was because of Mastercard integration, etc etc. There were conflicting accounts and I think the real issue with the announcement was the fact that they didn't make any definitive outlining of the policy change in any meaningful way.

I'm not sure it was, I don't know the site (legitimately) and from what I've seen, it's simply a Patreon style "fan" subscription site. Seems like they were quickly used for porn and such, but I'm not sure it was the main intent of the site (I also heard there are cooking and fitness creators on there ?). It's possible it was their intent from the beginning, but seeing as they're trying to ban porn, I'm guessing it's not.

 

Either way, with the amount of money OF makes, I'm failing to understand the ban also. Plus, even if they decided to go along with it, they'll likely crumble because right now, that's all they're known for ! lol

OF said it was the banks. Keep in mind that the Apple Apple store app was probably real "reason", since 99% of the site would be unavailable, and adult content was likely to seep through it if incorrectly tagged. But who would actually use an app that can't see most of the content?

 

Ultimately I doubt this is going to stay a thing. It's a porn site. It needs to acknowledge that. If it wants to spin off the non-porn into another site, it would be better off doing that.

There are "fan" sites in Japan which are a lot more lenient in what can be shown (such as fanbox, which is operated by pixiv), and these sites aren't known as "porn" sites, because they cater to art and software. Yes, a game or artwork might feature something adult-natured, but that's been the nature of the Japanese online digital market since inception.

 

Meanwhile US still has this ass-backwards view (shared by Apple) that porn is shameful and should be hidden or made illegal by any means. Canada and Europe at least dispense with the pretense, and sexual content is at most, "out of sight when the kids are awake", but you don't see many websites operating in full view, (eg they are age/subscription gated) if they contain adult materials. Every (legit) site, at the minimum has a "are you 18" prompt, and the sites that don't cater to piracy usually require a subscription to access archived content.

 

Piracy sites, which is the vast majority of "adult" content out there, is why the circular problem of Visa(which is more strict)/Mastercard/Amex/etc treating adult sites as high-risk, and customers charging back happens. The credit card bill will say something like "pornsitemerchantsRUS $99" and the person who has the card will feel embarrassed and claim a chargeback, even though they legitimately bought something thru that merchant, the site name isn't shown. 

 

Here's a clearer analogy. Let's say you wanted to shop for something sexy for you or your partner, it could be underwear, it could be an adult toy, whatever. Now if you're too embarrassed to go into a physical store (which BTW exist and also have card processing services, but if you want anonymity you pay cash) you instead purchase the thing online. Regardless of the thing arriving (which can arrive in custom packaging advertising the fact you bought from them (a la amazon) or plain box packaging) you feel embarassed about it, and immediately call your card/bank provider and say you don't recognize the charge. 

 

This is what happens with adult-oriented sites. People charge-back because they either want the content for free (because they intend to steal it and release it onto piracy channels) or because they are too embarrassed about it, or the card is not theirs to use (Eg spouse, parent, business) and thus the person who owns the card legitimately doesn't know what the charge is.

 

How much chargeback goes on? usually 5% or so. Merchants that deal with  Adult content, block certain IP address ranges that belong to high-risk countries like Russia and Brazil, and charge around 4%+ 0.60USD per transaction at the minimum. "Adult site"'s are charged around 16%. Adult sites will also typically refuse "bank" ACH payment because the chargebacks are greater than the subscription fee.

If you don't think OnlyFans is for porn then you are either being very abstruse or don't understand the site. 

 

1) For the vast majority of its existence, the website has been owned by Leo Radvinsky who is precious ly known for sites such as MyFreeCam which describes itself as "The #1 adult webcam community". 

 

2) They explicitly have a version without porn called OFTV. When you label something as the "not porn version" then the implication is that the other one is for porn. 

 

3) You need to be 18+ to sign up to OnlyFans. I'm not talking about being a creator or watching porn either. In order to use the site in any way shape or form, you have to agree that you are at least 18 years old. I can't think of many mainstream non-porn websites that have a 18+ barrier. In fact, most websites that are 18+ are that because they are porn sites. Even sites like Pixiv, Tumblr (before the porn ban) and Deviantart, that has a ton of porn on them, don't enforce 18+ verification unless you try and view something pornographic. You can still use the sites as normal until you try to view porn on them. OF on the other hand is so overrun with porn that they just require an age check before you even use the site for anything. 

 

4) If OnlyFans wasn't for porn then the ban wouldn't even have broken the news and people wouldn't call the platform dead. The fact that they felt so mucv pressure that they reverted the announcement is very telling. 

 

5) It is classified as a porn site on every single URL filter i have ever seen. Here is one example:

It is completely insane to try and say OnlyFans isn't a porn website because technically you can upload non-porn content to it. By the same logic Pornhub isn't a porn website because sometimes someone uploads non-porn on there. 

 

It's not what's allowed that determines the classification of a site, it's what's actually on it that does. If 95% of the content on a site is porn then it's a porn site. On LTT 95% of the conversations is about tech, so it's a tech site. Simple as that
