why do people buy another pc just for linux? cant you just dual boot?

I haven't heard of people buying separate PCs. Separate drives maybe, cause dual booting on one drive is somewhat unreliable.

What if you need both a Windows and Linux host to be usable at the same time? You can run one in a VM, but there are benefits to using two separate machines for some use cases.

People do the same thing just to have another Windows system. It's all just personal preference. Dual booting works fine for some people, but for others it can be a bit of a hassle.

Dual booting really isn't a problem, hard, or an issue. I use Linux primarily for everything except gaming. So I dual boot Windows 10 on my main machine (separate drive for Windows / Linux on that machine). One of my HTPCs still dual boots Windows / Linux, using the same SSD drive. 

 

Going into dual booting blind, and you'll likely have a bad time. I will definitely admit some of the Linux setups don't do a great job of making it straight forward. So some planning and research ahead of time definitely helps.

Folks new to Linux might Install Linux on a Older PC first to avoid disrupting any Work they may do on the newer system. Or the Computer being use could support Linux better. Linux is still treated as a Redheaded Stepchild sometimes.

if wanting a "pure" system, and maybe since you are only going to use it for Linux stuff? then I guess having a different system might be nice.

And if something were to happen, you got another system and when Linux might have more coders and people that might be messing around.

As a programmer I use separate machines because dual booting is a pain when you want to quickly test some code on one os while it's being made on another. VM would be a good solution for this but I the applications I like to develop involve rendering which isn't a strong point for VMs. So I am stuck wasting time switching between boots or buying another machine. I chose the latter lol.

Secure Boot at best was a Solution looking for a none existing Problem. It was just really a way for Microsoft to take back the control they once had.

As someone stated in another thread, think of all the slightly older, cheap computers that MS will refuse to allow win11 on. Then they will be ripe for an "unprejudiced" install of any distro of linux.

 

If linux can't beat MS through the front door, maybe they can by the back door, or at the very least cause some sleepless nights for some in Redmond...

Dual booting, while convenient, is dangerous as the Windows Updater has a nasty habit of overwriting the Linux boot loader, leaving only Windows usable.

Just buy a 2nd SSD and put your Linux boot loader on that drive.

@xAcid9 That's what i do. Key is to disconnect all other drives when installing any OS. Each OS has its bootloader on its own drive and i just use die UEFI's boot drive selection.
