What happened to the NewEgg we all knew and loved?

Hello LTT fans. Long time viewer but never got around to joining the forums. I got the kick in the rear that I needed today and thought I'd come tell you a cautionary tale. A couple weeks ago, after 4 months of trying, I "won" an Asus RTX 3060Ti in a Newegg shuffle and pulled the trigger on my Ryzen 5000 build. When assembling the PC I noticed that the seals were broken on the box and antistatic bag for the GPU. I suspected then that I was in trouble. Everything went together fine and the card worked great... for less than 24 hours. At some point, the day after I built it, the GPU died. The PC locked up and had to be hard reset. After multiple restarts in an attempt to get a display output I got it to boot, but it was using the MS basic display driver and the entire screen was covered in little multicolored lines/artifacts. The artifacting was even present on startup and in the BIOS. After the usual troubleshooting steps of wiping and reinstalling drivers/OSes, re-seating the card, etc., I popped my trusty old Gigabyte gtx1080 in it and everything came right up and worked great. Didn't even need to reinstall the nvidia driver. So I just tell myself "Well, I've been building PCs for 20 years and have never had to RMA a component before. I guess my luck ran out" and contact Newegg support for an RMA request. (The first attached imaged with the red redactions)

Fast forward to today when I get an email stating they received the package and were processing my return, followed immediately by another email that the status had been changed from replacement to refund. I immediately start a chat session with support about it (the second image with the blue redactions) because a refund does me no good when it took me 4 months to even get the opportunity to buy the first one. It did not go well.

 

Maybe I am being unreasonable here but I really feel like their support is dropping the ball on this one. I understand that under normal circumstances a refund would be perfectly reasonable, but we all the know the market is not "normal" right now. I feel like it's not too much to ask for them to set aside another 3060ti for me to buy or let me pay the difference for a 3070 or something. It wouldn't be unfair because I've already won a shuffle. Meanwhile, I am sitting here with a shiny new PC that doesn't even have integrated graphics and I can't sell my old one because I'm using the GPU from it.

 

Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox. I guess the "cautionary" part of my tale is to tell you guys to be careful with the Newegg shuffle. If you are lucky enough to win one but unlucky enough to get a faulty card you will most likely get the same treatment I am.

Newegg has been trash for awhile. Sorry this happened to you and that you must continue the hunt. That's really fucked up especially since they accepted the RMA and then gonna turn right around and put that GPU into another shuffle I'm sure.

lot's of people are/have been in a similar situation, but you'll never get a replacement from any seller in this market. Other people are receiving "used" gpu instead of a new one and they keep it if they work, like you would've, because sellers know they can get away with it in this market. But this is illegal and I encourage you to make a complaint to the bbb or something similar from your country.

To answer your question of “What happened to the NewEgg we all knew and loved?”, Chinese company Liaison Interactive acquired a majority stake in Newegg in 2016. There have been quite a few stories similar to yours on the forum the last few years, personally I stopped buying more expensive components from them.

The BBB is a joke with no power. Old people think it's some sort of official government body because it has "bureau" in the name. At worst the BBB is basically a protection racket, extorting "membership dues" from small businesses for a good rating.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Thats really disappointing that all they would offer you is a $25 gift card.  I agree as others mentioned, newegg isn't what it used to be since they got acquired.

I'd rather just use newegg to find a part, then buy it from Amazon because their customer service is good and they'll refund you with no issues.

Also reminds me of the loophole that was found in the the newegg shuffle, newegg closed it instead of actually letting people buy a graphics card.

I've never liked Newegg. First experience was bad, never went back. Friends have all had at least one bad experience.

You should have stopped right when you noticed the package wasn't intact as it should be for something brandnew.
I'm thinking someone did a swap, got the good one and replaced it with a dud, then sent it on it's way to you.

 

For any items I get of a higher price I always document the item when received for this kind of reason as in pics taken of the box before I even open it, as I open it and if it has any signs of tampering or damage, which yours did.
If you can do a video that's even better.

You would have had something to stand on with that kind of documentation and it's beyond sad to even have a need of it for this reason but that's how it is nowadays.

I've had that happen on fleabay too and within minutes of receiving what I had bought I messaged the seller with pics, proof of the time it arrived vs when the pics were taken and even sent them a screenie of the tracking info showing when it had arrived here, my time.

The exact problem was the item arrived damaged and made sure I got right on it when I discovered the damage which I suspected due to the condition the box was in and the noise I heard carrying it inside. Took my pics and video taped myself actually opening the box to reveal it with pics to support what was being seen in the vid. 
The seller in this case was able to get refunded themselves of what they had refunded me because of that and It really helped both of us since UPS had caused all the damage themselves.
They took the "Evidence" I had made and used it themselves to make the case to UPS for claim compensation.
It went from costing me over $500 to around $200 ($300 refunded).

I know you can't repair the card but that's the only suggestions I can make for when you'd order a high priced item like that - Document everything if something isn't right in the first place. 
I now do that anyway when something arrives period to at least document enough of it so I'm covered if I happen to discover damage or the sort of thing you ran into.
That way it's a legit gripe from the start and no real way they can worm their way out of it and if they try, you've got a legal leg to stand on if you really need it.

I hope things will go your way in the end but anytime you see something suspicious like the box/package has been damaged or opened/tampered with, I'd document it all right from the start.

I have to defend Newegg here. If they don't have the item in question, a refund really is the only thing they CAN do. Do you want to have them build a GPU out of clay? They are not a manufacturer, they are just a middle-person. And it seems they processed the RMA with no hassle.

 

Only real complaint is that it seems to have been an open box or something. Be glad they didn't force you to buy their Gigabyte PSU along with your shuffle.

Probably would've had more luck at getting another card by RMA-ing with Asus directly instead of Newegg.

Considering the packaging was open, unless you specifically got an Open Box item, I'd also say you likely got conned by someone doing a swap.

Newegg was sold a while ago to some chinese holding company I think. I never liked it from the beginning and always used Amazon, Microcenter, and B&H

As much as I dislike Amazon as a company, they offer superior customer service and return policies to everyone else out there so I consider them a safer buy.  If only Newegg improved its customer service and return handling, I'd jump ship on Amazon in a heartbeat.

A couple weeks ago, after 4 months of trying, I "won" an Asus RTX 3060Ti in a Newegg shuffle and pulled the trigger on my Ryzen 5000 build. When assembling the PC I noticed that the seals were broken on the box and antistatic bag for the GPU. I suspected then that I was in trouble. Everything went together fine and the card worked great... for less than 24 hours. At some point, the day after I built it, the GPU died. The PC locked up and had to be hard reset. After multiple restarts in an attempt to get a display output I got it to boot, but it was using the MS basic display driver and the entire screen was covered in little multicolored lines/artifacts. The artifacting was even present on startup and in the BIOS. After the usual troubleshooting steps of wiping and reinstalling drivers/OSes, re-seating the card, etc., I popped my trusty old Gigabyte gtx1080 in it and everything came right up and worked great. Didn't even need to reinstall the nvidia driver. So I just tell myself "Well, I've been building PCs for 20 years and have never had to RMA a component before. I guess my luck ran out" and contact Newegg support for an RMA request. (The first attached imaged with the red redactions)

Fast forward to today when I get an email stating they received the package and were processing my return, followed immediately by another email that the status had been changed from replacement to refund. I immediately start a chat session with support about it (the second image with the blue redactions) because a refund does me no good when it took me 4 months to even get the opportunity to buy the first one. It did not go well.

 

Maybe I am being unreasonable here but I really feel like their support is dropping the ball on this one. I understand that under normal circumstances a refund would be perfectly reasonable, but we all the know the market is not "normal" right now. I feel like it's not too much to ask for them to set aside another 3060ti for me to buy or let me pay the difference for a 3070 or something. It wouldn't be unfair because I've already won a shuffle. Meanwhile, I am sitting here with a shiny new PC that doesn't even have integrated graphics and I can't sell my old one because I'm using the GPU from it.

 

Anyways, I'll get off my soapbox. I guess the "cautionary" part of my tale is to tell you guys to be careful with the Newegg shuffle. If you are lucky enough to win one but unlucky enough to get a faulty card you will most likely get the same treatment I am.

I get the fruatration, but you were being a total Karen there. I used to work customer service for a major telecom and if something is out of stock, there is literally nothing a CSR can do about that.

 

Now personally, I wouldn't have offered you the $10 because it comes off as condescending. Had an issue with a Prime Day order with the cart and lost out hundreds of savings. Called CS and got offered a similar $10 gift card. That actually made me more angry and I declined before hanging up on them.

 

Not saying you're not allowed to be angry. I 100% get where you are coming from. But as someone who has done support for half a decade, you see things from both sides. First rep was doing standard protocol and in all honestly, may not have even been a tech enthusiast to know how scarce those GPUs are. The second also didn't do anything wrong. I've experienced atrocious support before and that is not what you posted. This boils down to a first world problem and taking out anger on people just doing their job.
