I use both, but for English I prefer to use graphics card. Somehow videocard can also refer to something like a capture card for some people. In another language I prefer to use video card, because graphics card is mostly the English term.

Video card: An older term for older VGA Cards like the Nividia's TNT 2

 

Graphics card: A modern term for a new cards like RTX 3080 and such.

In the early days of the IBM PC (and compatibles), all graphics processing was done on the CPU, which sent character or pixel data to show on the screen, where the video card would pick this information up and generate a video signal, reading all this data. The video card had no graphics acceleration whatsoever, apart from generating the video signal.

 

Those are what I call video cards. They look at what the CPU feeds them and generate a video signal based on it.

 

In the 90s, people wanted more from their computer, but CPUs aren't veey suitable for 3D graphics. So companies went on to develop 3D accelerators, which generated graphics. The CPU would still work in tandem obviously, but the bulk was done by the GPU. These cards which generate their own graphics instead of relying on the CPU for every single character/pixel are what I'd call graphics cards.

 

And thus, pretty much all graphics cards of today are that, graphics cards. They still do rely on the CPU to give them a clue of what to render, but they do actual calculation and insert triangles and stuff. They process graphics instead of a beam in

I just call it "Graphics card" or "GPU".

Some people get salty over the difference between those if you mix them up but depending on the context, it often doesn't matter imo.

To anyone who takes issue with this, they're just being difficult for the sake of it or have a superiority complex, context will make it fairly obvious what you mean. Saying "I was thinking about getting a new GPU" would obviously not mean you plan on ripping off your 3080's constituent components from the PCB substrate to replace lol

Graphics cards when referring to 3D accelerators, video cards when referring to display adapters or 2D accelerators, and VGA card when referring to things that go in PCI or ISA slots.

In the early 90s I used 2 types of cards. 

A 24 bit frame buffer that displayed one image at a time in 16.7 million colors on a NTSC monitor and a video processing card that I used for video editing and adding computer graphics to videos. They were all called by their company name like Targa card and Video Toaster(toaster).

 

I started using the term graphics card with the Voodoo card. Maybe because saying Voodoo sounded silly.

Usually graphics card when talking English, as this sub forum uses that name too.

Typically I tend to avoid "GPU" when referring to a full graphics card, as that can be confused with the GPU (chip) on the card itself.

 

I don't mind people calling it either video- or graphics card, as long as it's clear what you specifically mean it's fine.

That is why I don't like using 'GPU' or 'VGA' to refer to a graphics card, as those are terms that can be confused with something else.

As of its V.G.A. (Video Graphics Array), GPU Graphics Processing Unit. So using both terms means the same either Graphics or Video. Though I personally use Video when i want to mean something that is close to Movie style show, DVD etc , and Graphics for referring to Games, or drawing. Its no problem saying it either way anyway

Used to call them video cards in the 90s and 2000s, then suddenly they became graphics card at some point and I haven't gone back since.

 

I will use the term GPU sometimes, but usually I will say graphics card in spoken language.

 

But at this point we may as well just call em unicorns
