8÷2(2+2)=?

Mario5

8÷2(2+2)

16 or 1?

This is how i slove this beacuse my math teacher taught me that we get rid of brackest first.

8÷2(2+2)=8÷4+4=8÷8=1

or?

8÷2(2+2)=8÷2*4=4*4=16

I think the answer is 1 or my math teacher failed me?

Can't wait for the responses.

You do get rid of brackets first. After that it's still left to right PEMDAS.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

Just remember the order of operations and then you will be able to solve it.

This is why the ÷ sign sucks. It gets confusing in order of operation problems.

They taught you order of operations.. anything between paranthesis first, then multiply/divide then add/substract and so on... and same priority operations are done left to right.

They're not exactly in order like that, it's more like:

1. Parentheses

2. Exponents

3. Multiplication or division, whichever is first from left to right.

4. Addition or subtraction, whichever is first from left to right.

It should be mentioned MD and AS are on the same 'level', so if those are encountered in one formula, they still go in a left-to-right way.

I'm sure you just listed them with numbers next to them to make it easier to follow, but I still wanted to point it out.

What does the ÷ symbol have to do with it getting confusing? Because it can be seen as the addition (+) or subtraction (-) symbols?

The answer is 16 - it's a common mistake people make to confuse the two "ways" of solving the problem.

Correct and an important distinction. Some people incorrectly think that multiplication comes before division, etc.

Thanks for sharing!

I have not used the symbol in years, because in programming it's fully replaced with forward slash (/), which is confirmed by two of the answers there. The other field mentioned in that answer is not something I participate in often, but it was interesting to see the reason it's not used there.

Because you divide before multiplying, it is the same as this:

image.png

This means the *(2+2) would go in the numerator, not the denominator

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Following order of operations, you first simplify the parenthesis (2+2) becomes 4. Now you have 8÷2(4). Then because multiplication and division are on the same tier, you do them going from left to right. So first you divide 8 by 2 to get 4. Now you have 4(4) or 16. This is the same as [8*(2+2)]/2 not 8/[2(2+2)] which would equal 1.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Exactly this!

8÷2(2+2)

Parenthesis first

8÷2*4

Then, it's not Division first or Multiplication first.. It's whichever is first from left to right.
In this case, it's the division.

4*4
=16

Neither one has the priority over the other. If both are in the same equation, you go from left to right.

Too many assume either PEDMAS or PEMDAS are absolute in that order... They were taught wrong. It can be PE MD AS and PE DM SA and PE DM AS and PE MD SA... all are valid... (P is interchangeable with B if you use brackets instead of parenthesis, and "O" if your country is dumb and use "of" instead of "Exponents"... For BODMAS)

It's also a rough problem due to some that consider a 2(2+2) to be 2(4) to be 2 to the 4th power.  Growing up we used parentheses to denote powers when next to a number without a symbol to direct us.

I've never seen anyone use parentheses as exponents, I always see it as multiplication. I've only seen the ^ sign used for exponents (ex. 2^4).
