May want to pay attention in the other classes too and not just math 🙂   English especially.

It's also a rough problem due to some that consider a 2(2+2) to be 2(4) to be 2 to the 4th power.  Growing up we used parentheses to denote powers when next to a number without a symbol to direct us.

What country teaches brackets to denote exponents? Very odd.

🤔 I thought you're supposed to do 2(4) first because it's the bracket

Guess I'm really bad at math

Which is also why writing in fraction is superior

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

Following order of operations, you first simplify the parenthesis (2+2) becomes 4. Now you have 8÷2(4). Then because multiplication and division are on the same tier, you do them going from left to right. So first you divide 8 by 2 to get 4. Now you have 4(4) or 16. This is the same as [8*(2+2)]/2 not 8/[2(2+2)] which would equal 1.

No, because you're supposed to resolve what's inside the bracket during the P(arentheses)  or B(rackets) phase.

Once that's done, 2(4) is just 2 * 4. You don't prioritize it, because it's not a "Bracket" problem anymore, it's just multiplication, so standard multiplication rules apply.

I wouldn't go that far. Fractions can be unnecessarily complex I find.

The way you're solving it, you're putting implied brackets into the problem where they don't exist.

The problem is stated as:

8/2(2+2)

And you're solving it as if it's:

8/(2(2+2))

It is 16 man. Haven't done math too much lately since I left school. I was confused a bit myself initially when looking at it.

If you want it to be 1 you need to write it like this: 8/(2*(2+2))

Exactly - I feel like when some people see a "divide by" sign, they (for... whatever reason), assume that you're dividing by the ENTIRE REST of the equation.

It’s elemantary school arithmetics, but most people don’t actually do much math or arithmetics in their lives after school and thus forget how stuff work.
