Thread for Linus Tech Tips Video Suggestions

CPotter

Considering how popular and commonly used Bluetooth Headphones become these days, It would be nice to tackle the issue with buying a proper Bluetooth transmitter (cheaper option), or a full DAC with Bluetooth transmission (extremely pricey option) for your PC. It is quite hard to find something decent that would work and have LDAC, aptX, AAC, SBC with their low latency, or HD variants for PC. When you are streaming from a smartphone there is not a problem usually, in laptops built in Bluetooth should work also fine I guess, but from a PC - well... quality will be terrible, or would not work at all as far as I experienced this myself. Would love to see a video with some reviews, recommendations on a good transmitter with range of Bluetooth audio codecs that would not break the buck and would work well, for gaming and listening music and watching YouTube. It kind of s*** how hard is to use WH-1000XM3 or 4 with PC to have a good wireless audio 😐
Thanks!

So I made an earlier suggestion about "How much is enough?"

I suppose I should clarify, not "What old parts are good enough to process current tasks" but instead "How much processing power is enough to achieve what we need to do?"

Every company is making parts that can make more and more processes, and compute more data, but consuming more and more power.

How much processing power does one need to do basic tasks & compute a certain amount of game data and cad data?

Word Documents are to my knowledge, no more complex than they were in the 90s and early 2000s.

Games have some increased complexity, but games like Relic's Homeworld and Chris Robert's Freelancer prove that
"complicated mechanics" have been around a long time.
As far as graphics & resolution, using Normals instead of Geometry made a laughing stock of 2022's Halo Infinite when it was equivilent to 2007's Halo 3.
Additionally, many people are perfectly happy playing on 1920x1080 with the other added note that

Apple created the "retina" catch phrase to refer to screen size and resolution combinations that would make individual pixels invisible to the average person's eye.

As far as frame rates, 30 was "enough" for years in consoles.60 was "enough" to not get a headache on PC. 120 is "enough" to not throw up in VR. 240 is "enough" for many eSport Players (I think you experimented to find the max number a lifelong professional can tell the difference with in one video, so you know how much FPS is "enough" for pros)

Next onto CAD, parts have more or less always been "complex" but many good engineers proclaim "simple is better" or something to that effect.

SO....

How much processing power is "enough?" processing power? Sound cards haven't bothered to go higher than 44.1k or something; Wikipedia proclaims the "first" "soundcard" with 44.1khz was made in the 1970s.
We're even going back to a terminal/mainframe system by turning our computers into website clients (chromebooks, iPads, iPhones) and making super powerful mainframes (servers/cloud computing)

So... how much processing power is enough? Yeah, a lot of processes aren't single threaded anymore, but maybe we can extrapolate how much processing per core is necessary and how many cores are necessary to achieve tasks by examining both old and new computers & programs.

Is Word 1998 "just as good" as modern word? Does Modern Word have a ton of extra moot processing that makes it pointlessly waste resources?

Talk about crypto being a waste of computing resources... I found computers in my attic that have 100 Watt power supplies and NO HEAT SINK, and some that only have passive heat sinks.
Didn't your (Linus) first computer in the antec lanboy only have 400W psu? Now yea, you can do low-mid range PC for 500~600 Watts, but all the Intel extreme upgrades have 800~1,000+ Watt PSU in them because of mid-top range graphics cards being uber power hungry.

This might be a Gamer's Nexus type of video, but if Anthony wants to collect this technical data & work with someone to make this "understandable" then this would be an awesome video/video series! Similar to the Linux challenge, looking at how much processing power is needed and how much was needed in the past for these things, would be really cool.

Source Engine is still a great engine, and runs on potatos. PS1 graphics are becoming semi-popular again at the very least. Anime is literally a cartoon, and how many people play anime games? I'm sure you can draw my projection.

Hey guys,

I thought a cool idea would be on building your own custom keyboard, maybe you guys could even cnc a keyboard in house as part of the video and then buy a pc or design your own. also this could be a cool tie in to labs with you guys testing the custom keyboards against premade sold ones. I Think there are lots of cool things you can do in a series of stuff aboyt custom keyboards

Thanks for coming to my ted talk

ULTIMATE MUSIC PRODUCTION BUILD !!!

Us music producers need computers just as much as gamers and the lack of content on what to buy and why you should buy it in a professional detailed manor is absolutely atrocious especially for windows based machines ,theirs a desperate community that's absolutely immense generating  billions of dollars a year that would appreciate a video on what to purchase in order to enter it or to buy the best money can get.

I'm an audio engineer/Music artist down in the USA down in Florida , I've had to help a lot of people choose the right PC because of the lack of content on YouTube , and as well I'm on the journey of putting together a top of the line recording PC for my own work.

Audio recording latency
Virtual instrument playback latency
Audio effects performance and audio track count

These are the root things that would determine a music production performance while creating music.

Feel free to contact me I would love to elaborate more and give you a better background to approach this from ,  I'm absolutely obsessed with this topic and Audio in general & have been for a long time .

So normal ltt doesn't do vehicles other than the electric car bits.

But there was a vehicle that transports other vehicles too NASA launch sites.

This would be an amazing review of tech in my opinion and NASA and LTT would be an amazing combo for both. if u payed for flights and all NASA had to do u was send over an expert on the vehicle (probably on pay role already)  cheap but both parties would benefit greatly.

Hello,

Today after thinking if i should upgrade my GPU from a 6700XT to a 6800XT or 3080ti i started thinking about power consumption and i got a video idea that i never saw someone else do, i think.

So the basic of the idea is, does a lower end card at 1080p with low or medium settings, consume the same power as a top of the line card at 1080p?

It should be interesting to see if the same game played with same specs and hardware.. will make a 3080ti use more or less power then a 3060, with same settings.

And another variable to put it.. is if the FPS are locked.. does it make your gpu/cpu use less power? (this could be usefull now in summers when your pc its basically a oven).

I know this sounds weird, but I think there should be a series of videos on "How to use a Computer... as a"

-Linux/Windows Power User
-Gamer
-Content Creator (Windows/Mac)

-Basic

Show real world workstations and focus on the workflows they power.

Of course, and so the answer to the previous question depends on whether you lock it or not but usually newer hardware is more efficient at the same output.

Ambilight

Are there devices that will also work when using Netflix, or the signal must always come from an external source.

Ambilight on the monitor?

What is the difference in quality for a set worth 50 or 500.

What is the difficulty of installing / configuring.

What if the TV does not hang on the wall but stands in the corner of the room.

I work in digital forensics, which means I process acquisitions of other computers and devices. This means the workstation I use is typically outfitted with lots of IO, a large storage solution like a RAID, beefy graphics card and a lot of RAM. The companies that make machines for this purpose are charging 10k+ regularly. I would be very interested to see a review of the "value for money" that these rigs do or do not provide. Maybe a build centered around this purpose if it's not too niche.

Some examples of machines I'm referencing are:

As someone who enjoys old, obscure and obsolete technology, I'd love to see a rundown on the Intel Itanium IA64 architecture on the main channel.

For those that don't know - It was Intel's initial attempt at a 64 bit architecture (In fact, there's a techquickie about it!)

Possibly getting an old Itanium server up and running, trying to install some old software and talking about its history in a bit more detail?

Some form of review / reaction from brandon or even a rebuild with alex and brandon would be nice. Maybe a small FP exclusive?

LInus,

I have a suggestion to do a comprehensive review of the Sonos Amp and Sonos port products. I have used these extensively and loved them until recently. Why?

Because there is a huge bug where I can't reliably stream to my ethernet connected Sonos Amp/port products from any wireless connected device after the latest software update.

I can stream to these from any PC running spotify that is connected by ethernet, but my iphone and imac devices connected over wifi (on the same network and same subnet) are unable to see the sonos.

So the product is unable to do what it is designed to do.

I can provide you with video and configuration information to confirm this, but see for yourself - if you look through online forums you can see this has been the Achilles heel of the product.

I am posting this as a means to gain traction as well as bring light to a serious abuse of consumer trust by LG.

I am talking about a specific model of 34in Curved 144hz display, the LG 34GK950F-B.

I would like to reference the amazing write-up by nullsum: https://nullsum.net/posts/lg34gk950f-defect-analysis/

In short these monitors are prone to suffering a difficult to repair ribbon cable failure which causes the display to fail 1-3 years into service. This is abhorrent for a high-end display with an original MSRP of around $1000 USD.

There is a plethora of evidence detailing this to be a known fault of this model:

The list of reports goes on and on.

Myself and others are currently left with no recourse as the LG Support was unable to determine what could be done other than getting a quote from an authorized repair shop. They did put in a VOC or "Voice Of the Customer" and another rep reached out and told me that since the monitor is past warranty they would only be able to offer a rebate on a new monitor.

I can't trust LG displays after how blatant it is that the model suffers a known defect and how unwilling they are to make the situation right. I was considering purchasing a LG G2 TV for my home after the stellar reviews from Linus and team but I have no interest in LG products after this failure.

Even if this doesn't get made into a video, any help or suggestions are appreciated.

Quick update on this:
LG has reached out after making this post and emailing more of their corporate contacts. They will be issuing a refund for full retail amount and want my monitor shipped to them ASAP. The rep did not seem to know what they were going to do with it or why they wanted it. Might be due to the numerous reports I attached here and in the emails.

SkyAMP:

It sounds like a complete scam, but their selling point is that their device can passively boost your wifi, bluetooth, and cellular signals with no power required.  I don't know how this would work at all, but I don't want to spend a grand to find out what the inside of this looks like.  If it works like advertised, it could kill mesh networks and wifi extenders (which are despicable anyways).

Saw on wan show that a lot of people seem interested in a NAS setup, (so am I). I've been looking for the right hardware / server case to hold some HDDS and make an awesome build. I stumbled across a weird motherboard from china that has it's own case. it supports up to 32 HDDS in a single 4u chassis witch is perfect for me. the motherboard is marketed as a chia mining board so I don't know if it can be setup to run TrueNAS. i cant just spend $1500 on the case/ motherboard and have it not work. can somebody please check out the Onda D32H-D4 motherboard and try to make a TrueNAS build with plex on it?

With the rise in interest in memory storage and the higher quality leading to needing more storage available, more people are relying on external hard drives. There are videos out there that teach you how to access your external drives externally and remotely, but I would love to see your guys opinion on how to safely  remotely access smaller external drives branded seagate for example. A video on this would be really cool, I am sure a lot of people with smaller cheaper external hard drives would really appreciate.
