Nvidia Crypto mining cards are now on sale (and they are extremely overpriced).

Summary

After being announced by Nvidia over a month ago, their entry-level crypto mining card is now available and can be purchased for "only" ~720$. 

This card is based on Turing architecture, has 6 GB of GDDR6 memory and can reach 26 MH/s mining Ehereum.

My thoughts

I really don't understand this product.

I think that the card itself is pretty bad (26 MH/s is lower than a RX 580), also the fact that is being sold for 720$ is a complete joke since you can buy an RX 580 for 300/400$ and that would have a higher hashrate, higher efficiency and a resell value. Who's going to pay 720$ for literally a piece of e-waste ? 

Also the fact that the 3060 can now mine Ethereum really doesn't help.

It's even worse when you consider you can find 3060's being sold on eBay for ~$700 and they mine at nearly double the hashrate (with the leaked driver). Nice job Nvidia...

The price as listed in that screenshot does translate to US$720, BUT it includes VAT. Apparently it is 5% there. Remove that for typical US$ comparison, drops it to $685. Ok, not much better.

 

Also consider this is a random reseller. You can bet the actual real mining customers of nvidia are not paying that price for it. Didn't nvidia say they were not going to put it on general sale? So see this as like OEM CPUs "leaking" out.

nVidia has been on my blacklist since a few days ago after the "accident' bullshit. If AMD does the same to their GPU's, they'll receive the same treatment. My 1080Ti will serve me for another 4 years or so as I don't play the latest and newest games and I only play open-world games like GTA.

 

IF it happen some day I'll need to upgrade the GPU, I'll just look on a different way than webstore.

I'm not finding them anywhere else besides random sellers right now, but at the advertised 26MH/s they're not going to be popular with miners. 

Even the "locked down" 3060 does better.

The current hash rate is with a stock tune, most likely. Gotta wait to see how it performs with a proper tune before outright dismissing it.

Mining or compute only cards will never sell unless it's cheaper than the gaming counterpart. If you're a miner and looking to buy GPUs do you either A buy the card with IO that's cheaper and will hold it's value much better or B buy the mining only card that's more expensive, mines at the same speed, and doesn't hold it's value worth a shit. Hmmmm good thinking Nvidia especially paired with the shortage they're taking away GPU inventory to make mining cards that no one is going to buy.

Nobody with any sense is going to buy this. Sure, with tuning you may be able to gain an extra 5MH/s, but that's still nowhere near the 3060 hashrate that goes for roughly the same price. Not to mention the lack of resale value which basically leaves you with either a piece of e-waste or the $150 that you might be able to recoup when the crypto markets crash. You could argue about power consumption, but with a big enough undervolt and power limit (which doesn't really affect performance) you would be able to get to 125W with a 3060.

This has wattage going for it, while the 3060 has memory size going for it, that's for sure.

That said, I still won't judge it until I see actual mining performance; hashrate/watt, feasibility in a mining rig, etc.

3060's, even with the "accidental driver", don't perform well when using a GPU riser, for example. So their usage for large scale mining may be limited, while this card, or the ones better than it (this is the lowest tier after all) may be better for miners. Especially if nvidia decide to do the same to the rest of the 30 series cards; releasing drivers that stop them from being effectively used with risers and whatnot.

No reason to, the old drivers are very much public. There is no reason for miners to use the new ones. They might release super cards earlier than expected, though.

The points you mention are all true. Although, I still don't see this mining only card use much less power than even a 3060 that was quickly tuned in 5 minutes, and it's definitely not going to use twice as much power, so already will be more efficient at mining.

 

Though, with the driver only working in the top PCIe slot, 3060s likely isn't the best choice for miners. But neither is this stupid piece of e-waste. Also, even after the driver leak, the 3060ti is still a better card for mining, which just means gamers get the short end of the stick even more than they already have.

3060 TDP is already just 170 W, and manually tuned cards typically have their power limits reduced. https://www.legitreviews.com/mistake-enables-full-geforce-rtx-3060-eth-mining-over-50-mh-s_226703 has the 3060 at 50.2 MH/s at under 150 watts. If this mining card is already well tuned for mining, it could very well be near twice as much power per MH.

The e-waste argument is very valid. Although, seeing as this isn't the first time they made mining-centric cards, I'm not surprised that they did it again.

 

I do wonder if these are just low binned cards that are being repurposed for mining, instead of throwing the silicon away. That would kinda make sense considering that memory is more important than clock speeds, at least from what I understand.

Precisely, so this would be one of the worst cards to buy for mining even in today's market. The 50MH/s at <150W is probably an outlier and not representative of what most people could achieve, so if we compensate and say 48MH/s at 150W, 3060s will still be very nearly twice as efficient.

 

In that article they estimate 62 days to recoup the cost, so more like 120 days if we take into account scalped prices. Still much less than this mining only card plus having the possibility of reselling a 3060 for at least a decent chunk of what you paid for it.

These cards are built on Turing, not Ampere. So they'd be re releasing 2xxx cards as Ampere if they did that. People would be more angry about that then who buys what card now.

I think it was mentioned the CMP cards are based on Turing? IMO, nvidia could have made more rtx 20 series cards instead of mining cards that are e-waste if crypto crashes.
