Blade, the firm that operates cloud gaming platform Shadow filed for Bankruptcy

Summary

The firm behind the cloud gaming platform Shadow, Blade, filed for Bankruptcy in the California Northern Bankruptcy Court and the Paris Commercial Court began receivership proceedings on March the 2nd. Blade has now suffered a big setback, with server provider 2CRSi claiming back money owed by Blade with 2CRSi having the right to claim back Hardware worth about 30 Million Euros currently used by Blade and Shadow. There is also 3.7 Million Euros in debt surrounding the deal between Blade and 2CRSi. 2CRSi's reason to claim back the Hardware from Blade is because of the unprecedented demand for it caused by the Pandemic and resulting work and learn from home circumstances, they already have a bunch of inquiries to use the Hardware from new potential Customers. Blade has posted a Statement on the Shadow Website a day after it's filling for Bankruptcy announcing that it will undergo major reorganisation of the company to relief themselves of the debt holding them back and to continue on developing Shadow's Technology. Blade promised it had plans to move forward should it be successful in seeking funding through Investors in the coming weeks.

My thoughts

I'm a big fan of the concept and the Tech behind the Shadow Service, would be sad to see them going under.

Wow, between Stadia and this, I don't think anyone thought that cloud gaming would flop this hard (except for GeForce Now, I guess).

Is this sarcasm? Everyone knew Stadia was DOA when it was announced and they flashed impossible metrics and it's from Google.

I really doubt there are many people out there needing a gaming PC and doesn't currently have one since, just look how quickly computer components are selling out. More people than ever are buying gaming computers and components.

Cloud gaming will never make sense for as long as you are required to buy games to be able to play them. If it worked like video streaming sites, then yea, it'll take off for sure, but long term hardware rental just isn't economical for gaming since games mostly don't need very powerful parts to run. It only makes sense if you planned to upgrade your computer every other year instead of the average 3 to 6 years

I disagree. Sure, the enthusiasts use stock trackers and price history to grab parts when they become available, but for new builders I think that 'Sold Out' button can be pretty daunting. If I wanted to get into PC gaming for the first time right now, a cloud service would definitely seem more achievable than spamming F5 on 3000 series stock all day.

Agreed. The idea of simply buying a controller, a couple discounted games, and a subscription for a cloud gaming service seems to make a lot of sense for the average Joe. If I didn't have any computer that can run games right now, I'd be the first to spend some money for Playstation Now, Stadia, or Geforce Now. It just seems like a much better option than buying extremely overpriced hardware.

 

Obviously, cloud gaming services suck if you want to play competitive multiplayer, but even laptops from 5 years ago can comfortably run CSGO, LoL, Fortnite, etc., so that shouldn't be a problem either. 

 

I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm surprised by how hard these cloud gaming services flopped. I thought they'd catch on at least a little. Maybe they just weren't advertised very well?

I used Shadow for a bit. Honestly it was a great service. GTX 1080 + 2600K isn't the best specs (the Xeon CPU is basically a 2600K) but for $12 a month, honestly it wasn't bad (it was honestly an awesome experience) and considering no monitor purchase is necessary, it was quite good value. 

 

Sad to see them go!

I just can't imagine there are many people like that. The components are selling out due to demand, not supply, so it just means you have to wait a few days to buy one worst case scenario, instead of being able to buy a card immediately. That means more people than ever before are buying gaming computers.

If this were a supply issue, then sure, i'd agree, but with the elevated demand in gaming components, its clear people are choosing buying their own hardware over cloud gaming.

These things are selling out because there is more demand for it rather than cloud gaming. You seem to think its the other way around, that its all sold out because of supply issues and it would lead people to cloud gaming.

I would very much disagree with this. I and many others thought that cloud gaming was doomed to fail and I never thought it would take off and look at that it seems like that is mostly the case.

Its not about running the game well that makes esports games not viable for cloud services its because of the added latency. I would rather play on an older rig than use a cloud service because at least with an older rig I can still get 20 to 40 ms compared to the much higher ms I would get on a cloud gaming service.

If anything, I would have expected an increase in popularity, especially with the abysmal GPU market these days.

That's basically what Microsoft is planning on doing with xCloud and they already have an amazing catalog of games available.  My only gripe with it is that it's console games only and no PC titles.

Same for me but with xCloud! I haven't been gaming as much as I used to so CPU performance is much more important to me right now.  Plus, using a *nix based system is waaay more convenient for me than using WSL.

It probably will go somewhere,  but like vr it'll take decades...current tech companies are mostly incapable of creating services people actually want,  all they care about is maximum milking of customers, and as such often destined to failure.

 

They're all trying to catch lighting in a bottle , which still takes a certain skill most seem to lack, and usually just manage once in a lifetime (ie  Google)

The world simply is not ready for cloud gaming just yet.

 

Did they ever actually deploy it to actual customers?

It might be.  One would thing that the current problems would be GREAT for cloud gaming. You dont need a powerful GPU to do it.  What I wonder is if shadow play had to buy consumer grade GPUs to make its model work.  If they did they would have a growing customer base, no way to satisfy it and going down in flames is a foregone conclusion. 

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I've been using shadow to play Wow at work for months, and to play a few windows games on my Macbook pro. 

Took about a month from reservation to get full access to my shadow.
