From what I have read. Theres a lot of tech in the Saturn V line that they frankly dont have detailed schmeatics for. Many of the companies who worked on it either went bust or merged so plans were lost. NorthropGrumman originally being two companies back in that day. They would most likely have to tear down the Saturn V they have in their Rocket Garden but thats a historical piece, and Im not sure its a working rocket or just a model.

the F1 is something very well know. we still have unflow copies of the updated F1A and in 2010-2013 they were working on modernizing them for SLS side boosters. I'm not saying rebuild the Saturn V, we can do much better with CAD

This is an incorrect assessment. The test successfully detected a flaw. That is what the test is for.

Fix the flaw and repeat until no more flaws are detected. 

This is why DVPs are conducted.

its a failure given it will put the SLS at least 2-3 months later and into a 2022 launch. Yes they gained data but there isn't a good reason why this should have happened.

Energy density isn't actually all that important in a rocket fuel, (To a point anyway). Yes KP-1/LOX slightly outperforms LH2/LOX assuming equally efficient engines at sea level. But get higher up and H/LOX is vastly superior. Throw in a more efficient engine and LH2/LOX wins out by a mile.

 

This is why even the Saturn V's second and third stages are LH2/LOX based. The First stage just fulfils the same role as the SLS's Solid Boosters, get the rest of the rocket high enough for the LH2/LOX combo to get past the drag issues. It's also why some proposals for the liquid Boosters on the block 2 are looking at the F1 as a candidate, it's a pre-existing design optimised for low altitude burns, (A version for the core stage would need a new nozzle design, the current one would be very bad, possibly dangerous if you took it into space), with a Low Altitude optimised Fuel setup. A New engine that combines the fuel of the F1 and the efficiency of the RS-25 would be more desirable, but more expensive than NASA can realistically make happen.

And this is rocket science. Literally. Failures of some kind during development are normal. This stuff is insanely difficult and all the computer stuff in the world won't stop you having to run tests. Your proposed F1 version would still have had to go through all of this and would be just as likely to have somthing go wrong. probably more given the new Nozzle needed. That fact that it would be less efficient and more expensive is just one more mark against it.

 

As an aside, doesn't suprise me NASA is looking at F1 based liquid boosters it's what they originally wanted to do for the Shuttle program, (The SLS Configuration also dates to concepts drawn up in those days). The Shuttle was allways a huge budgetary compromise away from what they really wanted to do.

Your talking about tech the government scientists are still figuring out. Eventually that tech will make it in to the hands of a military sub contractor like Northrop Grumman. You should know better that the US military gets first dibs on all tech. I dont really consider NASA a military operations. Yes US military pilots are the ones flying the spacecraft, but its more of a civilian operation. Also, there are many who believe they are not really studying alien tech at Area 51. That Area 51 is more of a distraction from the actual secret bases that do that type of research.

The internet of today is kinda based upon it (youtube for example would have never been remotely as successful without all the "alien sightings area 51 *for real*" videos back in the day... you cannot resurrect what never died...  also I thought area 51 (and others) really exist, it's for military prototypes and stuff, wouldn't be surprised at all if google had a "oops nothing to see here" moment whenever that area is shown on maps...  🤔

Area 51 does exist. President Clinton confirmed it. The military got sued due to some personnel getting sick from them burning toxic waste. Because if the base doesn't exist, then the toxic waste cant exist, therefore environmental laws dont need to be followed.  Anyway, the military got sued. Obsously this case got thrown out on National Security grounds. President Clinton and every president since has issues an executive order essentially exempting Area 51 from environmental laws. Further more its kinda been established the planes such as the B2, F117, U2, SR71 and a few others were tested at the base. 

 

Technically the "alien" research was suppose to take place at a facility near Area 51 called S4. At least thats what the UFO guys be saying.

It does, but like Donut said, the truth is likely relatively boring. Military projects like the F-117 rather than UFOs. You can see it on Google Maps! It's just that satellite views only tell you so much.

The base has been sanitized from Google Maps. You can view satellite images from a Russian source. But the US government made Google erase the base from its Satellite images a few years back. Foreign powers could just use satellites or plans to spy on it. God forbid the US citizens have an idea of what's going on.

On a side note. I do believe in the existence of ET's. I do think the US government is doing tests on UFO's and other things. I dont believe they are doing them at Area 51 any more. Mainly due to it being Famous. But Area 51 keeps the eye balls off the other facilities that we dont know about.

For science I'm all for space exploration, but for simply "profit" and polluting not only the environment but also the orbit this gets a big nope from me. 

 

I also don't get why NASA didn't just continue doing what they were doing, I suppose some president cut their budgets hard.... but that's just speculation as I really don't know...

Well NASA doesn't have a spacecraft thats the issue. We currently rely on SpaceX and the Russians. They decided not to risk any more American lives with what happen with the space shuttle Columbia. Which is why the retired the Space Shuttle without having another spacecraft to use. As far as previous designs go. The Saturn V was really really really expensive back in the day, it would be a metric SHIT TON of money today to build. Which is why they didnt just build Saturn V's, because that would have been the best choice if they actual intended on going back to the moon.  Which is why they are doing tests. Because they are trying to design a new spacecraft.

As tragic as this incident was, with all due respect, that doesnt really make too much sense, I think they maybe already had plans to cut things down perhaps ... they were talking about going to moon, and Mars, but actually they didn't do much, just space shuttle starts because it looked cool on TV - it really did! 

 

I seem to remember NASA budget has been cut down tremendously iirc, so without a lot of dosh, you can't build an spacecraft... apparently! 

 

Edit: actually I just remembered the reason, was scratching my head lol... 

 

NASA simply stopped doing the space shuttle "missions" because they weren't needed anymore... 

 

They (USA) "won" cold war, and the whole space exploration thing was from the get go nothing else but a pissing contest with the USSR (Kennedy era) 

 

So yeah, it now makes sense...

I look at it this way: SpaceX and others are lowering the costs of missions and reducing waste with reusable rockets. Even if Musk envisions space tourism and private Mars colonists, he's helping public scientific pursuits in the process,

I'm pretty sure they also planned a proper space shuttle that doesn't need extra rockets to get out of orbit... they should make that, it's the only thing that makes sense imo... 

 

And nah, I don't get why this shouldn't be possible, fight jets can get into low orbit also, iirc!
