Game on with a better budget - Nvidia @ CES + 3060 announcement

Nvidia has announced the RTX 3000 mobile GPU series at CES 2021 as well as a new mid-range graphics card.

The flagship GeForce RTX 3080 graphics cards will feature GA104 GPU with 6144 CUDA cores and up to 16GB of GDDR6 memory. This GPU will be used by high-end gaming laptops offering 100+ FPS in 1440p gaming at Ultra quality. The RTX 3070 for laptops will feature 5120 CUDA Cores and 8GB of GDDR6 memory. This graphics card will be offered in high-end gaming laptops offering at least 90 FPS in 1440p gaming. Finally, the RTX 3060 mobile will be based on GA106 GPU with 3840 CUDA cores and 6GB memory. This GPU is aiming at 999 USD gaming laptops and 1080p gameplay. NVIDIA announces today that laptops featuring GeForce RTX 30 mobile GPUs will become available starting from January 26th.

Furthermore, the 3060 is 12GB. more than then 3060 Ti for some reason:

Thoughts: I can assume the 3060 will be out of stock, but I wonder if laptops are going to be scalped or bought out by miners. Only time will tell.

Nvidia will create an RTX 3060 Ti Boost with 10GB of VRAM to confuse us more.
Using GDDR6X because they have to.

What a lame event. Literally nothing new except the banging on the chest how awesome NVIDIA is. DLSS still stuck with per-game limitation, RTX still in only few select games, announcement of RTX 3060 that has been out for ages in Ti variant and is very much unobtainable like the rest and a meaningless "laptop" launch of devices not even made by NVIDIA that happen to have a tiny bit from them inside. Sigh. Was hoping they'll gonna announce game agnostic DLSS, but no such thing. Just tiny bit more of the same old everything.

 

Also, anyone noticed how they conveniently marketed RTX 3060 as "60 fps" card and put the framerate above 60 fps with DLSS? Sorry NVIDIA, but just quit with this bullshit. When DLSS is game agnostic, sure. But when it's very much and entirely dependent on the game supporting it, you can't claim it's "60 fps" mark as something it does globally. Coz it doesn't. It's in those games and those games only. It's crappy and it's misleading marketing BS speak.

Might be finally time to get a half decent gaming laptop again. Lot more interesting than the AMD presentation, at least we see something gaming relevant. No, faster CPU doesn't help much if you're GPU bound.

...the RTX 3080 Mobile GPU uses a fully enabled GA104 chip. If that sounds familiar to you, that's because it's the same chip powering the desktop RTX 3060 Ti and 3070.
