I was born in the 80s am I the only gamer left that still has a dvdrom drive in there case?

nelska

I had a DVD drive in my computer up until 2 weeks ago or so. Was cleaning the computer and decided to finally get rid of it as I don't remember the last time I used it.

You can always get an external DVD drive and just keep it around for when you need it. They're dirt cheap.

Ryzen 1600x @4GHz

Asus GTX 1070 8GB @1900MHz

16 GB HyperX DDR4 @3000MHz

Asus Prime X370 Pro

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

Noctua NH-U14S

Seasonic M12II 620W

+ four different mechanical drives.

I would have a Blu Ray drive in mine if it didn't cost way too much nowadays. Just getting a good case that ALSO has a full disc drive bay is hard enough that you almost always have to sacrifice in the price department. That and Blu Ray drives are so fucking expensive now. I'm just gonna keep using my PS3.

I have an HP15C calculator from 1982 that still runs great.

But I have moved on from the CD-ROM.

If I can't get it to download from the internet, the cloud, or a usb.....it really doesn't have any place on my computer.

I have a DVD/RW in my build from 6 years ago.

I used it then to install the OS and just used it a few weeks ago when I ripped some old VHS tapes to DVD.

My next build likely will not have one since I do have a USB DVD drive.

I have:
A 1.44MB floppy drive that works via a USB adapter

A 250MB ATAPI Zip drive (that acts like a 100MB Zip drive, weird)
A TSSTCorp CD/DVD-/+RW burner drive

An LG WH16NS40 Blu-Ray drive

And since the Zip drive and TSSTCorp drives are IDE, and my Asus B350-F Gaming board doesn't have IDE, I got a 1x 2-device IDE 2x SATA PCIe card.

You aren't alone.

EDIT:
I have about as many optical drives as computers (11).

Plus I'm not changing my case because I can't find any that have at least 4 5.25" front bays, 4 3.5" HDD bays, a back cable grommet thing, and full ATX PSU/motherboard support.

EDIT #2:
I'm 14.

i have a dvd drive on my z4

it's a life saver to me, though. I find flash media to be a bit unstable at this point.

then again, I like mechanical over digital any day other than gaming day, LOL!

I am also from the 80s and I often play 90s point and click.

Thanks to GoG and Steam I have not needed a CD/DVD drive in my PC since 2008.

I have external ones but non taking up space and cables inside the case itself, they live in a drawer until needed.

I still currently use my DVD Multi Drive in my current build. I don't use it really much but it's still there and will always have one as you can never know if you need to read a disc or can only install a specific old game by disc.

The only negative to me about those slim USB-powered externals, is that they perform less well (ie. slower) than a full-sized model. They are a bit more fiddly to deal with when inserting and removing discs too. Otherwise, yeah, they are great and extremely cheap. Full-sized external USB 5.25-inch cases have gone up quite a bit in price since their peak selling periods.

You could treat DVD-RAM like a huge floppy / USB stick by writing directly to it just like a USB stick or hard drive.

The way DVD-RAM was designed was brilliant in terms of chemical stability and data integrity. More expensive discs though.

But the point is you could really download directly to it without using any 'linear' authoring software / data prep (and without extremely unreliable packet-writing software that was all the rage at one point). DVD-RAM is rock-solid.

I still have DVD-RAM (in cartridges) along with a Panasonic drive and rank it as my most-loved optical drive.

Sony MiniDisc did the same with Hi-MD but that thing was far slower. None of them are anything to write home about today but they are chemically very stable formats.

I've DVD ROMs in both my PCs but there's a catch!

They're there merely for 'visual aesthetic' as the casings are quite old (Dell Optiplex 755, Antec NSK 4480). Don't really have much of a choice, really.

To be honest, I'm thinking about sticking something 'fancy' and modern in those 5.25" bays like like a fan controller, a blower intake fan (provided they exist), a USB / card reader hub, a speaker or maybe just a useless drawer or something but... guess I'm just lazy!

after i started this thread. I decided to remove my ssd and go with dvd rom HDD boot drive and m.2 nvme as something to download to to keep things (fast). actually love it. practical solid. and i really dont notice anything horrid slow. its normal. gets the job done. if i need something REALLY FAST TO DOWNLOAD TO, m.2 slot. Originally what all this is designed to do. lol!

I was born in 1999 and have ODDs in every PC and laptop I have except for 1 PC (have no spare ones and don't need one here, so I haven't bought one) and 1 laptop (it's 10.1", no space for ODD). I also have a external USB 3.5" floppy drive on my main PC. I would put an internal one (have a few), but I have no way to connect it. Honestly I rarely use CDs and DVDs anymore, floppy disks even less, but I keep the ODDs and floppy drives I have in case I need them one day.

Several years ago I noticed smoke coming out from the rear of my workstation.  The DVD-OD caught on fire for some reason.  Fortunately, I was in the room at the time and quickly put it out.  It damaged some of the insulation in the top case panel but nothing else was harmed.  I don't put ODDs in builds any longer but do have an external DVD drive that can be moved between PCs as needed.

Workstation PC Specs: CPU - i7 8700K; MoBo - ASUS TUF Z390; RAM - 32GB Crucial; GPU - Gigabyte RTX 1660 Super; PSU - SeaSonic Focus GX 650; Storage - 500GB Samsung EVO, 3x2TB WD HDD;  Case - Fractal Designs R6; OS - Win10

I still have a DVD drive in every computer I own.

Mostly because their old lol and came with them.

Both my laptops have them as well as my old desktop.

I very rarely use them though and then just for backing my personal data.

I think I still include DVD's in my backup routine out of habit and because of a tiny fear in the back of my head.

That one day some crazy event will happen and they will say sorry we lost everything of yours that was in the cloud.

As far as movie watching. I love watching movies on my iPad better then the TV now.

The only thing that would make it better would be if everything was actually stored on the iPad.

So the viewing quality would always be the highest and I wouldn't always need an internet connection to watch.

I bought of couse a USB DVD writer and even USB 3.1/2" 1,44MB floppy drive.

Useful. Nostalgic ... asyou'd need how many thousands of floppies to install Windows 10?

I bought a case with no drive bay without thinking. Everything that needs a disc to install is a huge inconvenience. I also don't buy into the idea that people don't want to own physical copies of their media. There is something to be said for spending money on something and having physical possession of it.

Every time the internet goes out because of a storm or something else, I'm glad I've got movie and game discs laying around... not getting completely thrown into the stone age in those situations is nice.
