RTX 3070 Actually Enough For 1440p 144hz?

Bearded_Ed

Hiya,

So I am currently on a GTX 970 at 1080p 60hz. (Ryzen 1600 as well).

Looking to upgrade to 1440p 144hz early next year.

I'm intending to go for an RTX 3070 as the RX 6800/XT seems to be worse value.  But is it actually going to be enough?

Some of the games I currently play;

  • WoW
  • Overwatch
  • Apex
  • Destiny 2
  • Tomb Raider series
  • Cyber Punk when it comes out.

I really don't want to have to save/spend more on a RTX 3080 if I don't need to.  Considering I am already going to need monitor and PSU.

Cheers.

rx 6800 is quite a bit faster than rtx 3070. it all comes down to the cost. both wil run 1440p over 100+fps on every title thought.

probably not 1440p 144fps in cyberpunk, but definitely in the other games you listed

This will only be enough in FPS games like WOW,OW,Apex and csgo and stuff

not for games like Destiny or Cyberpunk or Tomb Raider since they are Mostly Singleplayer games.

it gets 110+fps in shadow of the tomb raider so it should be fine

The 3070 is only good for 1440p 144Hz in WoW, OW, Apex and CS:GO? Wow, now that's a new one.

Funny how the 2080Ti was known to be a beast for high refresh rate 1440p, or even 4K gaming until not too long ago. What is it now - a 1080p card?

?????????????????????????????????????????

Singleplayer = lower fps¿¿

So if i play mc singleplayer i get 10 fps

but if i play mc multiplayer i get 500 fps?

Totally fine if you don't play on ultra as those settings increase the difficulty to run a game to the extreme for next to no visual benefit. Of course 1440p 144hz with ray tracing is not happening without dlss.

i have a 2080Ti and i can tell u that it is NOT a beast for 1440p 144hz (but u have to say that i play on 3440x1440 and not 2160x1440). So the resolution is a bit higher but its not a beast for 1440p Ultra/high especially with RTX on.

No i meant that singeplaer games usually have Better graphics and are more demanding than "competetive" fps games like Apex or OW

Of course it always depends on the game and the optimization.

Go for the rtx 3070.

Cranking the settings down may get you a 100+ in even cyberpunk, considering it is optimised above average.

AMD gpu's do surely sound like a better deal but are a whole lot worse in aftersales support and driver updates.

Its not quite a bit faster, its on par and below in most cases. Please do refer to the proper reviewers that actually tested the card :P

A 3070 will do 1440p 144hz just fine, adjust a few settings and youll be great. I havent had many issues on my 1080ti on 1440p, just a few adjustments and voila. I never play on ultra because i find it quite pointless to begin with.

You dont know what an unreleased Game is going to perform at, do not speculate about framerates, for all we know they could pull a witcher and not really run well at all lol

we don't know yet, but it's probably very demanding, rather than poorly optimised.

Nah, "recommended" requirements by CDPR is a 1060.... If this game runs poor it will be optimization / development hell issue, quite clearly.

Yes we don't "know" for sure yet, but we do know what CDPR is saying the requirements are, which seem quite low, for a "next gen" title.

the 3070 can't even play the witcher 3 at 1440p 144fps. i'm quite sure you won't get 144fps in cyberpunk

Yes. For now. AMD is working on a alternative to DLSS, which is Nvidias technology. May not be as good this gen, but next gen should be far better.. But we really don't know about that yet.

I can even guarantee that. I would never play this game unless I get paid to do so. :o

Also if I wanted that I'd just turn down settings for that one badly optimized game, I don't see the issue tbh.

Thank you everyone for the discussion so far!

I think in an ideal world, if the RTX 3080 FE actually existed in the UK, I would be buying that because the price makes sense.  However at the moment it does not, and lets face it there are almost no GPUs of any kind available at the moment.

I think I need to hope that the RTX 3080 FE is in stock in say, Feb next year. OR buy a good RTX 3070 for less.

I've used a 1440p 144Hz monitor for some years now, and my GPU is a 1080Ti, so not even 3070 level. I wouldn't complain about its performance, but the big thing here is, what are the expectations? If you want locked 144 fps all the time, that's going to be tough even with top end GPUs. If you're ok with high frame rates below 144 fps, you can turn most things up. At worse, you might trade high vs ultra if needed, which are generally not that perceptibly different in games. I would say G-sync is a big help in my case, obviously there's Freesync if you decide to go AMD route. I would want a better CPU than the 1600 to pair with any of these GPUs.
