So today I decided to relearn my typing technique. I got really used to using 6-8s fingers which is not bad but I would want to get that 9-10.

My typing speed was between 70 and 80wpm. Today after first day of learning I got to like 40wpm and it doesn't feel comfortable typing with those 10fingers.

The question is that should I keep on practicing with 10fingers or it is not worth and should try to improve accuracy and speed with 6/8 fingers instead.

My goal would be to reach 100wpm by the end of this year.

Use the other 10, see if it helps

/S

Using 8 fingers and typing fast is fine, I'm a self tought touch typist and I only use 6 fingers, my dad who does a lot of word processing for his job is pretty impressed by how fast I type. Other forum members too, when I manage to spit out a paragraph the moment a topic is opened.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

My opinion? Touch typing (using all ten fingers to type) is definitely worth it, if you're obsessed with WPM like I am. 😁

One good, free resource to learn touch typing or to correct old typing habits is TypingClub. There are a bunch of what they call "Lesson Plans." The default "Typing Jungle" offers easy-to-learn tutorials, videos (that I didn't watch), and some short paragraph exercises to help hammer down the habit (684 items in total). You can zoom through their exercises if you'd like, but I'd try to get at least 5 stars on each before moving on. I've used it in the last few months, and improved my WPM from 90-ish to 110-ish (I noticed I was only using three fingers on my right hand, lol).

Once you've gotten the basics down, I'd suggest practicing regularly with some typing tests, like those on Typing.com or Monkeytype. Practice makes perfect, after all. I like those sites in particular 'cos there are options for 1/3/5-min or 1/2/3-page typing tests, and they log your results:

Spoiler

Typing.com:

Steady improvement in WPM, from around 90 WPM to 110 WPM. On particularly good days, I can hit 120+ WPM. 😁

Monkeytype:

Notice that WPM tends to go down the longer I have to type. 👀

Give 'em a try, if you're interested? The three sites I mentioned above are all free to use, no commitment or mandatory subscriptions. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

You don't need to use all 10 fingers to type to be able to type fast. Louis Rossmann is a good example of that, he uses 2 or so fingers to type and easily does around 100 wpm.

That's some impressive hunt-and-peck typing!

This was done during the pandemic, he probably was previously repairing a macbook, or, he just wears them all the time since the pandemic started.

Oh, I see. It totally makes sense. I had a guy in my IT classes in Uni who wore white cotton gloves because his hands were sweating. We called him Mickey Mouse 😆 I thought it was the same case with Louis.

That's a very solid speed, nothing to worry about there. I can get up to something like 130 wpm, if I really focus on typing as fast as I can, but I don't see much point in that. My typical, relaxed speed is at around 80 wpm.

130-140wpm, I hit backspace with my ring finger and don't use right shift. Just do what works for you.
