Saying that once a power supply is out of warranty it's a ticking time bomb is like saying a 3 year old car out of warranty is a ticking time bomb.

By your logic I should replace my seasonic x850, it's almost 10 years old 😲😲. Same as my acer predator xb271hu, the power supply in that guys is 5 years old. How about my 60" samaung plasma, its power supply is 12 years old.

PSA! Everyone needs to replace the electronics in their homes that are out of warranty.

ALL THE POWER SUPPLIES ARE TICKING TIME BOMBS PPL. HURRY..

Bullshit confirmed.

So electronics don't degrade over time then I suppose?

Or to put it another way they last forever... As long as they still turn on they are working fine.... 🤣

Have you had that Seasonic X850 professionally tested to confirm that it's still in spec..... And not slowly frying your components etc....?

No, I didn't think so...

Are you for real.

WHO THE FUCK IS GOING TO TEST THEIR POWER SUPPLY?

Besides obviously you and maybe Jonny.

I replace mine after a certain amount of years.. ;)

Not going to risk say $3000 in parts to an old way of date PSU.... The risk is just too high... So spending $150 to $200 on a new PSU is a small expense... Compared to $3000.... High end GPUs aren't just $300 anymore like in the past.... And that list goes on.... $1500 GPUs and $300 to $400 motherboards and $500 CPUs and on and on.... The it turns on so it's fine logic just doesn't fly any more like it used to...

Seen way too many bad things happen when I was in the tech field.... Working on and building PCs.

That and had a few bad ones take out a few systems of my own too, kept them too long, out of warranty...

and in PSUs where voltage regulation isnt done independantly. like a group regulated unit. you want UVP the same way you want OVP, just in case. this applies to reliable units aswell.

also iirc it covers for high wattage units where Multirail OCP would be good.

its not a problem untill the PSU dies, or fan dies. which would likely end in the PSU dying.

i can mention like 1 on hand, like the BR. i dont keep an eye on them regularly due to wanting to remember better units. Tier C in the tierlist has a number of them (since there is a requirement for it)

then  you know why group regulated units arent great. there are decent group regulated units, like the VS. but they still lack UVP, which is one of the protections you should have in a modern unit.

and checking for things like this isnt the easiest, hence tierlist is a fairly usefull for finding decent unit with protection coverage. instead of rellying on "good brands" and a pricepoint.

The problem there is that these arguments rely on group regulation being dangerous or requiring UVP.   The vast majority of PSU 's in the market are group regulated, it may not be a high precision feature like independent regulation, but it does not appear to cause an increase in system failures.

Perhaps you can point me to evidence that group regulation is doing damage to PC's.   Because for the life of me I see no correlation between group regulated power supplies and a higher rate of component failure.

One of the biggest issues I have with the whole PSU ranking and testing activities, is that much of the issue is mistaking the ability to measure a thing with said thing causing an actual problem.  Sure GR can result in 10% change to the voltage, however that 10% still puts it within the UVP and OVP thresholds, so the lack of those is moot and the thresholds of the components are designed to handle that much change.

Honestly you are more likely to experience problems from UVP kicking in than an extra 1.2V or 18% ripple on the 12V rail.

My seasonic x850, she's not long for this life.. lol it seems to have not taken the transplant of a 10850k and 2080ti FTW3 both overclocked well. Suddenly yesterday had a system shutdown while gaming, and again today, and I made it do it twice more by running furmark.

It is 10 years old, 3 years past it's warranty.

You got your monies worth out of it.

Time to retire it.

We had a good run lol.

Looking at replacements, the usual suspect. EVGA, Corsair or another seasonic. An 850 enough but I may just grab a 1000, systems seems thirsty.

850W or 1000W either one is fine...

I am running a 850W in mine...

I would recommend a HX 850 or 1000W personally, or the HXI versions... But Seasonic Prime is good also, especially the 850W and 1000W Titanium's.
