Horology on the LTT forum- A watch thread

Ouch, what model and what's happening?

I have a Pentax K-S2. I dropped the camera maybe 2.5 feet while I was taking it off a tripod, and at the time I had a pretty heavy lens on it (you know, like a kit lens with one of those multi-lens macro adapters, probably weighs like a kilogram), and it landed camera body first onto carpet. Everything on the camera seems to be fine, but it crashes or doesn't do anything when I try to do anything that involves using the sensor.

So, for example, I turn the camera on, and it turns on fine. If I press the shutter the camera will just do nothing, and if I switch to live view mode (which should close the prism and put a feed onto the LCD), it closes the prism but it's frozen after that. You can go into and look at saved photos no problem. AF doesn't work anymore. Video mode is instant crash because it runs in live-view mode first.

So yeah, it's probably sensor related, maybe it got knocked loose when it dropped and is no longer connected to the rest of the camera, or it was destroyed by the impact.

I do want another K-S2 though, since I've got maybe £600 worth of lenses for it. Worst case I'll have to cough up £400 or so for another used body.

I like the watch, pretty

Yeah, it's not a bad little thing, the moving parts on a pocket watch movement are much larger than on a wrist watch movement, so you can see it working more clearly.

Hey guys i thought about this little giveaway i wanna do here, a little bit inspired by Teddy Baldasarres latest video.

Here's what's going on.

I want you to build the "best" watch collection for 3000 USD (+-150USD). This can be anything, from a 1 Watch colleciton to 10 watches, whatever, just stay in budget.
We're going off of retail prices here.

The post that get's the most reacts here wins. Giveaway ends on Easter Sunday, the 4th of April.

Please try to include a picture because not everyone knows all the references etc 😄

Now it's your turn guys  @SansVarnic@spartaman64@LordVetinari @Mutoh@iBabySlapper @Grumpy Old Man@sub68 @BlueChinchillaEatingDorito@Whoeverwantstocompete

Not sure if it's too late but here's mine:

First up is a diver/GADA watch. I went with the Zodiac Super Sea Wolf 53:

Spoiler

ZO9278_main.jpg

It's a classic swiss diver with all the horological weight you'd have out of a Submariner or Fifty Fathoms without the outrageous price tag. I'm a big fan of skin divers and these guys offer loads of options. USD 1093

Next up is something for a dressier occasion. I'm a big fan of tank style cases and since most people don't wear a dress watch as a daily, I went for something with a quartz movement but still has a bit of class. It's a Hamilton Ardmore Classic:

Spoiler

h11211553_1.png

Nice, vintage style piece. Small enough to wear under a suit but still wears bigger than it seems, interesting dial design and also has a sub-second complication which is nifty (and might bug people less if you don't like jumping seconds). USD 600

Next up is a mechanical chronograph. There are tons of companies that do different case sizes, styles etc... but I went with the classic Seagull/HKED 1963:

Spoiler

57DACA54-EE78-4BCF-A022-A7528EA82D80_108

It's a fully mechanical chronograph based on and made with the original Venus 175 tooling machines. Allegedly used by the Chinese army as a pilots watch. Swan neck regulated, column wheel traditional chronograph that works wonders. Really pretty with an open case back. Comes in a traditional 36-38mm case size or a bigger 40mm one from companies like EMG. USD 280

For the forth piece, I went for something a little off piste. It's not complications that everybody will use but considering the price and bang for you buck, it's a solid piece. The Glycine Airman GMT:

Spoiler

GlycineGL0246-3_ffbf2552-f647-4970-a9ca-

This piece features a GMT complication on top of being a 24h watch. Mostly useful for pilots to keep track of multiple timezones and AM/PM but still nifty for an automatic piece under 1k USD. Comes in various sizes and styles. USD 830

And for the final piece, something you could use as a daily but still look classy while doing it. The Timex Marlin Automatic Day/Date:

Spoiler

TW2U11800.png

It's a revival of Timex's handcranker from the 60s but with an updated movement featuring automatic winding and a day/date complication. Comes in sizes ranging from 34mm to 40mm and in many different dial colors. A super strap monster too since it looks good on straps, natos or even mesh bracelets if that's your thing. USD 229

Total USD 3032

A little over 3k USD but I would consider it quite a sweet 5 watch collection. Lots of different styles, complication and history behind each piece and you're doing it whilst looking pretty fly IMO.

EDIT: LOL totally didn't read the post right before mine, but enjoy the choices anyway.

So with all major brands dropping new watches left and right, what's your favorite new piece?

The new grand complication JLC is crazy but at over 1 million usd pretty much unobtainable 😄

I gotta say I was quite frustrated by Tudors new releases as I hoped to grab a GMT this year.

So far my favorite has been the Sinn U50 Mother of Pearl but I have no ambition of getting it anyways because it's not really my style. Still cool.

The Breitling grand complication is super nice too.

Disappointed Tudor went with a gold case for the hulk. Wouldve grabbed one in steel. The other 58s were kind of boring.

Not a fan of the meteorite dial Daytona and Jubilee Skydweller from Rolex tbh

Hmm, lets see.

I thought the Oris Aquis Cal. 400 was pretty cool. It has dual mainsprings so has a pretty long power reserve (120 hours I believe), though it is a kinda basic looking movement imo, aesthetically reminds me a bit too much of a Claro-Cemag CL-888 (which is basically a swiss made tongji). They really should decorate it a bit more.

There was also the Seiko Presage Sharp Edge GMT that's coming out soon, which looks quite nice. Strongly considering buying either the brown or the green.

There's also the Citizen/Miyota Cal.0200 that's been annouced recently. It's a nice looking calibre, I hope to see them soon in microbrand watches; I personally don't really like Citizen autos, nothing in their range has really grabbed me design wise, but I'd buy microbrand watches with Miyota movements (like the Second Hour Mandala, which I paid for earlier today).

In my little watch world, I'm also dipping my toes into custom watches with Seiko movements. I've played around with Vostoks and Ricohs before, but I haven't tried any Seiko parts. But I saw this online, and it pulled me in. Expect to see a picture of a SKX007 style custom watch on here in a couple months time, with this dial. Or I might put it in a flieger case, who knows.

Definetly!

Love brown straps on watches like this!

Guys I just saw the latest Frederique Constante release and I am blown away. It was released 2 weeks ago but I haven't heard anything about it.

They essentially made a 40hz movement that is fully mechanic but has the seconds sweep of a spring drive while still having 80h of power reserve! At 4.5k€ it's not cheap but it's also not as expensive as you'd think for such a tech.

I already asked my local jeweler and if I put a 20% deposit down I can get one at release. Kinda tempted tbh since Tudor disappointed me 😄

Kinda tempted tbh since Tudor disappointed me 😄

yep i just hope it has sub 1 second a day accuracy. if it does then its my next watch lol

I heard it has at least COSC certification. We'll see how good it really is.

I am not sure if I should jump on this or wait for other, more modern looking, watches from FC or even for other manufacturers to implement this. Although having one of the first watches and a limited one at that is quiet special.

I think it is a really interesting movement they made, I just wish that the design was a bit more modern or sporty (or both). I just can't see myself wearing a watch that looks like that.

Teddy Baldassarre...............GIVEAWAY

Can the three watch selections be difference variations of the same model, or do they have to be completely different watches? Because I have this one that I have my eye on and I'm not a very knowledgeable watch nerd yet.

Nice. I actually came here in the first place today to see if anyone knows if the new Marlin autos hold up to the same durability standards as the originals.

It's good value, has great looks in my opinion, pretty normal lug width so easy to find a NATO for, and hopefully durable, I just really like it. I don't know if a modern modular jewled movement is as durable as an old monolithic metal bearing movement. Or if there's another watch that would fit my wants better.

Ooo, that does look like a pretty good option. I'd be worried about the crown catching on stuff compared to the Marlin's tiny cylinder crown. But yeah, that does look nice. Thanks for the suggestion.

Me? I'm a simple guy, so simple watches. I don't care for those big ol' massive ones either.

https://praesidus.com/products/m-38-mb-gr-sapphire-glass-green-canvas-38mm?variant=39253386920039

Has anyone had any experience with this company? Do they make good stuff? I like the WWII airborne watch and it seems decent for its price (then again, i'm not a watch expert or even a watch enthusiast). Water resistant, crystal glass, self winding, and a luminescent watch face to boot. I really love the style and if anyone could give their thoughts on it that would be much appreciated. Price is ~250 USD. Is that typical of watches like this?

Honestly? This was the first thing I saw, and it fit the bill.

Will check them out, though.

EDIT: Well, looks like they do have some good watches, but I don't need a diving watch, because, well, I'm not a diver. I think I still like the Praesidus more than any of their options though. Runs a little bit cheaper than most of their options and I don't have to pay for the shipping, since I live in the US.

Is there any reason that I should go CWC that I don't know about, or is it just a brand that you are more familiar with?

Do you mean the Timex Marlin?

I think those have a Miyota 8000 series inside. Not a massive fan of Miyota 8000s but for reasons other than their reliability, they should last for years.

And they're very cheap movements so when it breaks you can just put a new one in.

What do you not like about them. I know the manual models have some cheap Chinese made movement, and the automatic ones have a better Japanese made movement.

Well, the Miyota 8000s (and the 9000s) only wind one way with the rotor. This means, if the rotor spins the way it doesn't wind, it just spins without resistance very noisily. Most 8000s don't hack either, which isn't essential, but is a nice thing to have. Yes, some Miyota 821As (which is the slightly updated 8000-series cal.) do hack, but those are kinda rare, and still don't wind properly.

But otherwise they're robust, cheap, and have acceptable levels of accuracy.

Obviously, it depends on the watch how much the sound of the rotor is transmitted, but if I can remember correctly Timex watches are particularly famous for being loud.

As for the hand winders, they look like Seagull movements, so honestly those are probably just as good as the cheap Miyota movements.
