Horology on the LTT forum- A watch thread

Skip the speedy, get an El Primero and an Aqua Terra instead haha

Honestly it kind of sounds like you already know what you want. I'd just go with the GS.

Agreed about Nomos though. I mostly prefer Junghans in style if were going Bauhaus although I did enjoy the Tangente. Wouldnt mind a Lambda but would like it in a smaller case.

For me the Max Bill is pretty peak for minimalistic pieces. Love the thinness too.

If its just the watches at face value id choose the el primero over the speedy but with the history of the speedy makes it more desirable than the el primero to me.

And yeah like i said im 99% set on the snowflake and I probably already considered all of the "main stream" watches. But there could be a watch that ive never seen or heard of before that I like better. And its not every day i can spend 5000 on a watch so im just trying to cover all the bases lol.

The El Primero has great history. It was the first completely integrated (I.E. not a chrono module added to an existing calibre) automatic chronograph movement ever introduced. It was also high-beat and had 3 sub-dials. Something cal. 6139 nor the cal.11 can boast. There wasn't a movement like it at the time. Even the original Daytonas had El Primero based movements. Speedmasters are nice and then you realize everybody has one and they're a simple chronograph with ever inflating Omega prices. This is coming from a multiple time Speedmaster owner too. Also, not to be pedantic, but unless you're buying an actual moonwatch (I.E. a 321 loaded piece) then you technically don't have the history. Reduced models haven't been to the moon, neither have most Speedys. 321 loaded Speedmasters aren't cheap either.

I really think you aren't going to be happy unless you buy a GS. Go with your gut, buy for yourself.

Honestly, the Zenith is pure class. People whine cause Rolex Daytona fanboys dont want to feel they got ripped off paying 20k+ for stainless steel

Probably, it took a beating over its life. I had it quite a few years. I never even noticed the strap getting perished or cracking though so was pretty pissed when I got out and noticed it gone.

I keep thinking I should replace it.

I had this Mercedes Benz branded Daytona thing which I knew was a complete fake. But hey I liked the look of it (even before I even knew what a Rolex Daytona was) and Mercedes Benz was my favorite car brand after racing around in a C63 AMG for a while in Gran Turismo 5/6. I was in high school at the time so no one really knew much about watches so who really cares. I liked how it looks and that's all that mattered to me. Plus it had a nice classy vibe to it as smartwatches were starting to take off. That watch has since had a rough life. One of the pushers fell off, not sure when that happened; I just noticed it one morning on the bus. The crystal has a deep ass scratch on it (obviously not a high quality one), and the battery has gone flat. The backcase has no notches so replacing the battery would be more work than its worth. But nevertheless it was a good stopgap watch it has served me well through my senior years of highschool and through my University degree. Now that I've graduated, I should look into acquiring a proper time piece. Right now I'm just using this thing from American Eagle that I got for 3 dollars on clearance. Nothing to write home about, even a bit embarrassing to wear, but again another stopgap timepiece. Something that looks alright and at the same time, I'm not too worried to get damaged.

I got the RAF gravitymaster with the same module recently. They tick pretty loudly, but they do everything you expect a GShock to do very well. The carbon fiber body is pretty nice too. Just shop around, you can get these starting at less than £220 (not the RAF, but the standard variants).

If you're looking to start off, Aliexpress brands or Vostoks aren't a terrible place to start. If you give me any preferences on looks, budget, etc. I could fly you some recommendations.

That American eagle has pretty rough brushing on the bezel eh. But it was $3.

It is, aside from the loud ticking and the strap being a bit rattly and hard (especially compared to the resin stuff on the older GShocks), it's a pretty faultless watch.

They even put a slightly domed crystal in it, which is something I really didn't expect from a GShock.

Yes but it is also a dark steel color when I bought, the sheen is mostly the light reflecting. I have a second of the same watch but it is more of a chrome color.

You know, I was on the fence about buying that watch or not, but after seeing the lume I might have to get one...

Whenever their site is back up.

Now I have been wearing it for a while the lume is the one thing that causes my only niggle - in direct light the lume areas are quite an attractive cream colour, in anything less they carry a noticeable off-green tint as the lume output overpowers the natural light. It still looks smart and does open out some strap options but its worth being aware of.

(it could also do with a higher beat movement - its a 21,600 which is fine, but something smoother would really set it apart. But its also only £300 so that's more a wish list item than a complaint.)

Honestly, beat rate isnt something I think is too important personally. Its nice to have a smoother sweep for your seconds and slightly better accuracy but its not make or break for me.

Youd probably pay an extra 200 bucks or so if it had a 9015 or a 2824. At that price point you could be in Hamilton/Glycine/Certina/Tissot levels.

For most watches I would agree - however for a dress watch I think the smoother sweep has more perceived 'value'. Just IMO.

would I pay an extra £200 for it though? Not on this watch....

For a dress watch, you should only have 2 hands (or no watch at all) IMO.

Thats why I like the Reverso personally.

i personally hate watches with two hands. why pay extra for a high end precise movement and then have an imprecise indicator
