Doesn't everyone use Mario Teaches Typing?

 

I used various software as a kid but at my first job my boss would dictate stuff to me and I would type it up. He would help me loads to improve and I got really good. Its a skill and I am so glad he took the time to teach me properly.

Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing :D

In like 2nd grade they started and didn't stop until 7th. Minecraft helped the most on touch typing though

Exacly lol. I only look at the keyboard to know where my hands are just before I need to start typing. I definitelly dont follow the typing best practices. Still I can type at around 85-95 words per minute, which is plenty good for my use. Im not a journalist or anything, and even then, when i type documentation or even as im writing this post, I'm thinking slower than I can type.

i had a class in 2, 3 or 4th grade one of them

but i didnt really learn anything there

cs 1.6 taught me writing blind with 10 fingers at night 

cs 1.6 had qwerty layout while my keyboard had qwertz layout, so cs 1.6 also told me the english keyboard layout :D

 

a few years later i had 10 finger writing test in one of my classes but at that point i was gaming for over 5 years so i didnt really learn anything there :D

Probably early primary school. My family had a computer  for quite a while and I had my own for a long time, just a hand-me-down. I dont think we ever sold any. I didn't learn to really touch-type until university.

when i was like 12-ish people around me told me i should learn to type "properly" and follow a "dactylo" course to learn how to 10-finger type with a piece of paper over my hands..

 

instead i sat on my ass playing games and talking in chatrooms, resulting in me naturally learning a typing style that sped me beyond said people with their piece of paper nonsense, as well as being fluent in english :D.

 

now, i dont 10-finger type, (its more like a very non-equal 8 ), but the only really viisble difference between me typing and a trained 10-finger typer, is that my hands "hinge" a lot more around my wrists.

I had typing classes when I was in school years ago back when Windows XP OS was the norm, I was told to never look at the keyboard while typing and later I found out that was BS. We had Type to Learn on the PCs and one kid in my class would type so fast that the game could not keep up(probably because the PC hardware was way under spec for the time and they were still using Win 95 and 98 OS). I am not fast typing and I don't us the home row method any more for reasons.

The looking at the keyboard thing can be BS.  In practice it usually isn’t though.  For just individual keypresses? Sure.  For full on communication though? Looking at the keyboard causes problems.  It can make a poor typist type faster in tests, but generally when typing for communication one has to look at something else other than the keyboard, and it winds up being slower net wise, because you have to keep on switching focus.  So never is strong, but it’s a bad habit.  I’m typing on a phone screen atm for communication, and I have no choice but to look at the keys.  It slows me down a lot.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

When I was really little, we had a little 'speak and spell device'... yes I'm 40yrs old and remember the early years of tech/gadgets... My first keyboard would have been a commodore 64, then I had an Amiga and Atari ST.. got my first basic PC around the beginning of the 90's an old Amstraad 4060 or something (I can't remember the model number, it was a big beige box with a monochrome monitor sat on top and required about 8 AA batteries for the system clock and had two 5 1/4 floppy bays.

 

I'm not a great typist, I can't touch type but I can do 40 or so words a minute.... I can kinda semi touch type certain words due to muscle memory.

That’s called “two finger” I think.  A trained typist can generally do 100+pwm.  Kinda curious what your wpm is.  
 

The deal is “typist” used to be an actual job, and people thought long and hard about the fastest most efficient ways to do it.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Maybe it was different in my case, my brain does not work the same as everybody else, which is what I was told back in my school days, and there has been a lot of contradicting information throughout my high school and college years, and in a typing test you are right, but for me it is different.

At school, 7th class or so. And afterwards again during my apprenticeship as commercial employee. And while this was more or less repetition to me as I had already learned to type at school it still helped to improve my skills.

 

Fun fact: Our school had Macs while almost everybody who already owned a computer at that time (approximately 1996) used a PC. I hated those things (the Macs) and did not see the point in taking IT lessons on Macs while we all had PCs at home. What should I say, it stuck ?

There is no replacement for RGB except more RGB ?

1996 was pretty close to the very lowest point of apple.  Stock was selling for no joke $1.  Steve Jobs has only just taken his old job back after the NEXT computer went down through lack of removable storage capacity.  OSX wasn’t out yet.  It was a bad time.
