Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I used this thing to teach me which finger goes on which letter.

Then I just one day decided to write blind and stopped looking at my keyboard, when chatting with friends. Took a week or so of effort to master this skill. I'm still not at 100% accuracy for special characters, like... %, § and $. Or numbers. It's because I rarely need to type them. Actually, I think I used § right here for the first time ever. Why is that even on there.

Well, for reference, I'm 34. My dad used to work at Digital, so I had access to computers from an early age.

But as for actual typing (as opposed to DOS and such where you're hardly actually typing), my Grade 5 class had keyboard/typing lessons. So I would have been 10ish.

It was on something similar to this, but I cannot find the actual unit the school had. 

And despite such lessons, my obsessive computer use in my youth completely morphed my own typing style that resembles very little of legit keyboarding taught nowadays.

Good question.  I don’t know what it is either.  It’s probably something though.  There’s a weird one German uses when two Ses wind up next to each other which is pronounced “ Ess Tset” or something. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ß

I used electronic typewriter. I think I was 9 or 10. Using MSN Messenger and later IRC made it quicker.

Somewhere around 2nd grade or so I think.

Same, at home.  The school district followed up with typing in middle school.

self taught over many years. typing in school wasn't a thing when i started getting into tech/computers

Yeah proper techniques take fatigue off your wrists and finger making you less likely to develop carpel problems and you can sustain typing for greater lengths. Not really an issue though as most people are typists for a court room or personal secretary

There is big age difference here.  When I was in school, no one took any typing classes until High School.

 

I think 11th grade I took a typing class and was long before Windows 95 came out.   In grammar school, like 3rd grade, we had Commodore 64 , but it was to play games like The Oregon Trail

When I was in high school we got the first “IBM compatible” Sold in the US for under $1000.  Sanyo mbc555.  Thing was a piece of junk.  It had the video memory in the wrong place and couldn’t play games at all.  4.0mhz.  *creepy creaking old man flex*.  There were older machines around.  They had Tandy trs80 model ones in the science lab complete with external floppies and cassette tape drives.  Those things are worth more than my car now.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

How are you supposed to learn the 10 finger system (that's what we call it in German)? You could of course buy literature and learn it by yourself but to me knowing how to type counts among basic skills that should definitely be acquired at school. And yes, there is one efficient way to type (the so called 10 finger system) and then there are the various ways used by people who have never learned the correct way. Which is of course fine for a few lines of code on the command line or short chats in a game (lol, noob, sorry for tk, nice frag... ?) but definitely not for writing longer E-Mails/ letters. I for my part am very thankful that they taught me how to type efficiently even though I usually don't have to type that much at work.

1988 ish, I was 7, Dad had been a computer programmer of some sort at McMaster University in Ontario before he went blind so he taught me using his computer he got that had text to speech module, pretty impressive when you think of the time it was, but it was HUGE lol

I started to learn how to type at around 4 years old thanks to my grandfather and these guys.

I remember having a typing class in 5th grade (1991) using an Apple IIe.  Really had no idea what the application would be or why I was doing it.  After learning how to touch type that year, I didn't touch a computer again until several years later, but the ability to type stuck.  Also was learning cursive writing the same year.  The school said "you'll need to know both of these in the future".  Hey, one out of two ain't bad.

We had computer classes in elementary school, but I took a typing proficiency course in middle school that was much more helpful. I got lucky with the typing class, as it turned out to be a prerequisite for the computer programming class I took in high school.
