I fully expect US will climb to #2 on the chart just below China in term of confirmed cases very soon.

I knew it was just a matter of time and did my “hunker down” shopping weeks in advance. Now empty shelves everywhere. No one believed me in my area beforehand.

Little update from Michigan.

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2020/03/15/michigan-governor-signs-executive-order-to-impose-enhanced-restrictions-on-price-gouging/

Seems the state is stepping in on price gouging. This has been an issue all over the US. Michigan decided its going to try to put an end to the madness in some way.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

A couple of weeks ago I mentioned to my colleagues about stocking up extra food and supplies. I was ridiculed that I was overreacting.

Most people in these generations haven't experienced any emergency situation like this. Even many governments haven't stocked up medical supplies and increase hospital surge capacity given the warning signs from China popping like fireworks for more than two months.

Even the court (both civil and criminal) are shutting down here starting tuesday with few exception cases; thats interesting.

Italy now has cases still accelerating, 250 dead in 24hrs. To put that in perspective that is 7500 dead per month at the current rate (which isnt stable but still rising). For those in US, compare the size of italy with a single US state to get a feel of whats coming your way.

Quebec Prime Minister just ordered the closure of cinemas, bars, and libraries.

Restaurants to be limited to 50 % capacity.

It takes more than two months for China to stabilise the situation there, given how strict the lockdown they have. I think there will be at least a few more weeks for Italy to reach the same point. Netherlands is 10 days to two weeks behind Italy.

US with its President, God bless them.

Maybe. But some govenors are taking steps. Events have been cancelled. School is cancelled. NewYork has activated their national guard units to help keep quarentine. Also as you said the US is large. About 20% of Americans live in rural areas, and probably are safe as a result. Because they can stay away from people. I know for the next couple weeks the only place im going is work, I work in a warehouse, with less than a dozen others. Other than that, we bought enough food to last 2 or 3 weeks, hoping this will blow over.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

Num nuts is not as bad of an issue. Most states have their own health authorities and are pretty much the ones that are handeling the issues. The CDC really provides guidence. Its the indvidual state govenors who are having to deal with the sisutation in their respective states. The feds really are just providing guidence and funds to the states.

Yeah i think size matters here (having more rural areas). One problem of europe is density of people; my country is about 150 by 250 km give or take with 16 milliom plus people; we pretty much are a overcrowded human ant colony.

This also has been happening:

A New Jersey mother claims a “spray sanitizer” she purchased at a 7/11 burned her son’s arms and legs. She says he has first-degree burns stretching from his hands to his upper arms after she used the product on him. River Vale Police seized the remaining bottles of the product from the 7/11 where the mother originally purchased it. The ingredients listed on the bottle include chemicals known to cause severe burns.

47-year-old Manisha Bharade of Wood-Ridge has been charged with endangering the welfare of a child and deceptive business practices in connection with the case.

I don't really agree...

In France, the area striken the hardest, the Grand Est region (Alsace, Champagne, Oise, etc.), is a very rural area. There are a few mid-sized cities, but it's mainly rural.

And that's where you have the most cases.

The key is testing, look at S, Korea. CDC screws up big this time.

Ive heard other labs are now doing testing. Big corporations are pulling together and trying to weather the storm. Who knew theses fuckers can accutally care? They are making testing easy as well. They are setting up drive thru areas in parking lots where they can do the swabs and you dont have to leave your car. They then send it out to the lab.

For reference funding for the CDC was cut, which is why they are so unprepared. But also remember the CDC is not the only heath orgainziaton in the US. Each state generally have a Department of Health and here in Michigan each county has a health department, generally they are the ones who check to make sure resturants are with in the letter of the health code, but they also deal with other health issues. Such as the hepatitis outbreak we been having in Michigan for the last year or so, you could get vaccinated from the health department for cheap if you were at risk.

I keep reading Trump cut CDC funding. But Congress passes the budget for CDC more or less maintain the size of the budget over the last three years. You can actually find the information in CDC's website. If I remember correctly, the 2018 CDC budget is 7.04 billion and 6.86 billion for 2020. I read Trump cuts CDC budget by 80% or 20%. The actual decrease is a few percent.

I don't know exactly what happens to CDC. They design the testing and requires FDA approval, blah blah. However it's national emergency. If for some reason they can't produce enough test kits or capacity. They can ask for help. S.Korea can do 15,000 tests a day.

Also, Trump and his administration has been in charge for more than three years. He still blames everything on Obama.

I doubt they produce the kits themselves. Probably have a government contractor to do it. Also from what I heard its not the testing kits that are the issue. The the lack of labs in the US that can run the tests. Also the CDC is not the only part of the US government that deals with deasese research. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Army_Medical_Research_Institute_of_Infectious_Diseases. Considering the defense budget, maybe the US Army should be called in to research this.

Yeah your probably right. Rural or not people cross the same points of contact like shops.

In the end we all need to eat, and the shopping carts and shop fridge doors are touched by everyone. Then we pack / unpack, and "tada" its on every item, mostly on stuff we need to get&touch in preparing food.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/rachelsandler/2020/03/02/how-the-cdc-botched-its-initial-coronavirus-response-with-faulty-tests/

CDC screwed up with the kits (the company they paid to make the kits).

Then it was decided to make new test in the US as head of State decided that AMerica was Great Again! 🙂

Again a screw up!

Then not enough labs to do the tests and give back the results quickly enough.

You had 5 other companies who had tests ready to be used, but they were not american, so they had to be FDA approved. FDA dragged their feet, because it must be an american response to an american screw up problem!

Now, finally, Roche, a swiss company, has been FDA approved, they will be able to do it quickly, and of course they will be paid for that. Which is WHY they wanted an american solution, to pay the pharma lobbies and keep the money in house.

Now Trump can't say "I made America great again!", and after he botched the deal with CureVac he won't be able to brag to his electorate "I gave you the vaccine!".

And yes, now it's a proven and official fact! He tried to do it!
