Profiting from LTT without permission?

I know there is an official displate store, however this collection is labeled LTT but with no official logos... so i'm guessing this is not illegal even if he has not asked permission?  Seems kinda strange to me...

It shouln't be illegal other than the Channel Super Fun maybe. It's pretty awful that someones making these without any permission though.

Unless LTT has secured a wordmark trademark for each of the phrases in every country displate sells to, it's not illegal at all.

Displate is a polish company, and I highly doubt Linus has secured international copyright for any LMG content.

Like Kirashi said, unless they have a trademark for those... They can't do much "legally". Even though it's clearly a rip off collection. (Which, quite frankly, is fugly... Who the hell buys a metal plate with just text on it)

OT a bit, but I've been wondering..how do those things work, anyhow?  They're magnetic I know...but I don't have steel walls, so seems like I'd still need some kind of mounting system.

This falls down to company's moral in the end. They are/have been LTT sponsor. Do they allow misuse of their own store etc. which is infringing basic copyright? As said, LMG has little to no ground legally. But just like with YT etc. platform is responsible for the content they host.

I doubt they're making anything from it. $44+ for a sheet of metal with some text on it. Not something that many people are gonna waste money on.

I mean.. I can print things Linus says in a boring font, print it, and get a frame at walmart for all of $5...it's not metal, but it's 1/10th the cost .

Some of it is generally LTT-inspired and will serve as a second layer joke only to those who know LTT very well. Like the firetruck for instance, I think it's kinda funny.

 

The only things I have concerns about are CSF and Scrapyard Wars.

That's basically what Displate does, along with most other poster/shirt stores. A large portion of the money is made from stolen from places like deviantArt and sold without credit or payment to the original author. It would be pretty hypocritical for LMG to get upset about this after doing a lot of sponsor spots for them.

I don't think LMG can really do anything here, the products are quite literally just quotes from LTT but written on a poster. Unless it contains the LMG/LTT/Techquickie/Techlinked/Channel SuperFun/LTX logo or other trademarked pictures I don't think there's anything that LMG can do.

It's pretty cut and dried violation of copyright. Doesn't fall under parody...I wouldn't say it's transformative...It doesn't even look to be a drawing, just a one tone render of the promo pic.

Technically, those "posters" are metal plates that you can stick on your wall with magnets...

While the one in OP is obviously not worth that much money, there's some pretty cool stuff on there

We're aware and have asked Displate to remove the items from their storefront. We'll see what happens.

As they're sponsoring lmg I don't imagine they'll take kindly to it even if it's not illegal
